On This Day In Space | 26th February 1966 : 1st Launch Of Saturn 1B Rocket

On February 26, 1966, NASA launched its new Saturn IB rocket on its first test flight. Also known as the Uprated Saturn I, the Saturn IB was built for the Apollo program. With a more powerful upper stage, it was designed to carry the Apollo Command/Service Module and Lunar Module into low-Earth orbit. NASA used the Saturn IB for flight tests early on in the Apollo program, but this type of rocket never actually launched astronauts to the moon. For that, they used an even more powerful rocket, the Saturn V. The first flight of the Saturn IB was uncrewed. Among other things, the mission tested the rocket's propulsion, guidance and electrical systems.

Astronomers have investigated a small population of stars in the halo of the Milky Way Galaxy, finding its chemical composition to closely match that of the Galactic disk. This similarity provides compelling evidence that these stars have originated from within the disc, rather than from merged dwarf galaxies. The reason for this stellar migration is thought to be theoretically proposed oscillations of the Milky Way disc as a whole, induced by the tidal interaction of the Milky Way with a passing massive satellite galaxy.

A team of astronomers led by Carnegie's Meredith MacGregor and Alycia Weinberger detected a massive stellar flare—an energetic explosion of radiation—from the closest star to our own Sun, Proxima Centauri, which occurred last March. This finding, published in Astrophysical Journal Letters, raises questions about the habitability of our Solar System's nearest exoplanetary neighbor, Proxima b, which orbits Proxima Centauri.

In the 1980s, researchers began discovering extremely bright sources of X-rays in the outer portions of galaxies, away from the supermassive black holes that dominate their centers. At first, researchers thought these cosmic objects, called ultraluminous X-ray sources, or ULXs, were hefty black holes with more than ten times the mass of the sun. But observations beginning in 2014 from NASA's NuSTAR and other space telescopes are showing that some ULXs, which glow with X-ray light equal in energy to millions of suns, are actually neutron stars—the burnt-out cores of massive stars that exploded. Three such ULXs have been identified as neutron stars so far.
Now, a Caltech-led team using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has identified a fourth ULX as being a neutron star—and found new clues about how these objects can shine so brightly.

On September 15th, 2017, after nearly 20 years in service, the Cassini spacecraft ended its mission by plunging into the atmosphere of Saturn. During the 13 years it spent in the Saturn system, this probe revealed a great deal about the gas giant, its rings, and its systems of moons. As such, it was a bittersweet moment for the mission team when the probe concluded its Grand Finale and began descending into Saturn's atmosphere.

Luis Elizondo - Secret UFO Revelations | John Greenewald - Opening The Blue Book Files

The existence of UFOs using technology more advanced than anything on Earth has been proved "beyond reasonable doubt," according to Luis Elizondo, the former head of a secret US government program that studied UFOs. Elizondo, who quit as head of the program is now part of Tom DeLonge's 'To The Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences' (TTSASS) team. He joined George Knapp in the first half to discuss the secret program, unidentified crafts that the program investigated, and why he thinks we may not be alone. After an early military career in Army Intelligence, Elizondo was assigned to a position in the Pentagon where he was surprised to learn that he was chosen to study the UFO issue. His immediate supervisors had no knowledge of this part of his duties because of the compartmentalized nature of the project, meaning only those directly involved in the program had a "need to know." After his initial shock, Elizondo realized that it was "definitely a profound topic to be exploring."

Elizondo said the Defense Department was concerned with anything that was not readily identified by witnesses, radar, or other sensing technology. The famous USS Nimitz UFO event and video footage was just one example, he said, and added that "there were other events that occurred like the Nimitz, and not in the distant past." Elizondo also mentioned that reports from military witnesses included physical effects such as feelings of nausea or "a weird loss of time perception." He also confirmed that military hardware has been affected or disabled during UFO encounters. He discussed the controversial "alloy" or "meta material" in the possession of Robert Bigelow’s company and said that it shows unusual properties when tested and contains "isotopic ratios that are very unique." As for the UAPs themselves, Elizondo has not made up his mind as to whether they are "from outer space, inner space, or the space in between."

Part two guest John Greenewald began by expressing a skeptically cautious opinion about the TTSAAS revelations before describing how he has received an incredible cache of never-before-seen documents from the Air Force’s Project Blue Book program. Former Project officer Lt. Carmon Marano preserved much of the amazing UFO history of the project and shared it with researcher Rob Mercer, who digitized the collection of photos and documents, and allowed Greenewald’s Black Vault to host it for the world to see. By a stroke of luck, Mercer saw an ad on Craigslist for a box of the documents and found that Murano was the former owner of the property. Murano provided the rest of his vast files to Mercer. While the files contain no "smoking gun" revelations, Greenewald said that the documents reinforce the position that more than anything else, the Air Force program was a public relations operation and a "campaign for the media to report to the masses.”

Greenewald described a strange episode of a coverup which involved journalist Lee Spiegel and his efforts to confirm an online manual used by the Air Force for researching UFO reports. Within 48 hours of his inquiry, the document disappeared and the Air Force denied that it had ever existed. Greenewald also described his request for any UFO reports in the files of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD.) He was told that they did not have the authority to release this information because the organization also included Canadian forces. He called the Canadian Department of National Defence, who quickly released "about 100 pages" of NORAD UFO sighting reports. In his over 8000 FOIA requests, Greenewald has also come across the distressing news that many records have simply been destroyed, such as surprisingly, the FBI files on many of the alleged members of the infamous MJ-12 group.

On February 28, 1959, the U.S. Air Force launched a new spy satellite prototype called Discoverer 1. This was the first satellite that NASA launched toward the south pole in an attempt to put it in a polar orbit. But the mission didn't go entirely according to plan. After Discoverer 1 passed out of radar range somewhere in the southern hemisphere, it went missing. The Air Force had prematurely announced that the satellite had reached orbit, but they had no way of proving it. In fact, no one had a clue about the whereabouts of Discoverer 1. A CIA report that was declassified in 1995 states that it probably crashed somewhere around the south pole.

Last year, ESA's Gaia mission helped astronomers make unique observations of Neptune's large moon Triton as it passed in front of a distant star. This is a preview of the superb quality and versatility of the Gaia data that will be released in April.

The occultation of a distant star by Triton, Neptune's largest moon, as observed on 5 October 2017 from Constancia, Portugal.

The large object in this view is Neptune, while the fainter source to its upper right is the star occulted by Triton. The star was first seen to dim, as Triton passed in front of it, then underwent the so-called central flash, appearing even brighter than before or after the event, before dimming again and eventually returning to its usual brightness.

The central flash, caused by focussing of the starlight by deep layers in the moon's atmosphere – about 10 km above surface, can be seen half way through the occultation under the right observing conditions.

Taking advantage of improved measurements of the star's position and a few hundred more stars, provided by Gaia, the Lucky Star team has coordinated a campaign to observe this occultation.

A collaboration of professional as well as amateur astronomers observed the phenomenon at more than a hundred stations across Europe, North Africa and North America. The improved prediction of the best locations to observe, based on the specially released, preliminary data from Gaia DR2, led to twenty-five successful detections of the central flash, from Spain and Portugal to the south of France and the north of Italy.

The astronomers are now busy analysing the data collected during this campaign to learn more about the atmosphere of Triton.

The name “Hunt the Skinwalker” is both a mission statement and a metaphor, a goal that is both literal and figurative. In the religious traditions of some Native American tribes, a skinwaker is a shapeshifter, a sorcerer, a witch and a trickster. It is the blanket explanation used by the Ute tribe of northeastern Utah to explain a myriad of frightening, seemingly paranormal events that have occurred in the Uintah Basin for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Reported phenomena include orbs, UFOs, animal mutilations, unknown creatures, poltergeist-type events, and many other inexplicable incidents that seem to defy our known reality.

This website was inspired by the book "Hunt for the Skinwalker", which chronicles the work of NIDS, the National Institute of Discovery Science, as it conducted the most intense scientific study of a paranormal hotspot in history. The results of that study were inconclusive. Nonetheless, the scientific team was able to document and investigate scores of mind-boggling events, as reported by a multitude of witnesses over a period of several decades.

Our hope is to use both the scientific and journalistic models to, in effect, Hunt the Skinwalker - that is, to explore, investigate, document, and report any incidents, events, and encounters involving a wide range of unusual or unexplained phenomena; to explore hypotheses, and to engage with other researchers, scientists, journalists and eyewitnesses.

It is entirely possible that the explanation for the broad range of unusual (and occasionally hostile) activity is beyond the ability of humans to comprehend or to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Nonetheless, the pursuit of truth is still a worthwhile endeavor, and could eventually help us to understand our place and our role in the cosmos.

The events documented at the Skinwalker ranch - and at several other locations around the world - represent both a warning and an invitation.

Astronomers have used Chandra data to determine that an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) contains a neutron star.

This ULX is located in M51, which is also known as the Whirlpool galaxy, located about 30 million light years from Earth.

ULXs are extremely bright sources of X-rays, first discovered by astronomers in the 1980s.

This new result helps provide clues as to how ULXs shine so brightly in X-rays.

On March 3, 1969, Apollo 9 launched three astronauts on the first crewed test flight of NASA’s lunar module, which astronauts later used to land on the moon. Astronauts James McDivitt, David Scott and Rusty Schweickart orbited Earth for 10 days. They tested the lunar module’s engines and navigation systems. They also practiced docking and undocking the command module and the lunar module in orbit. (On the fourth day, they took a spacewalk, but it was cut short because Schweickart had a bad case of space sickness.) This mission showed that the lunar module was ready to fly to the moon.

China will begin recruiting civilian astronauts for its military-backed space program and plans to increase the number of crewed missions to around two a year, a top official with the country’s space program said.

China’s third batch of astronaut trainees will include recruits from industry, research institutions and universities who will help build and crew China’s independent space station, Yang Liwei, deputy director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, told reporters on the sidelines of the annual session of China’s ceremonial parliament.

„Shortly after the November 1969 Apollo 12 mission to the moon had returned back to Earth, Life Magazine published on the front cover of it's 12 December 1969 issue, a striking photo of astronaut Alan Bean walking on the Lunar surface, with a brilliant blue-glowing energy field enveloping him. That spectacular photo -- reproduced below and taken by fellow astronaut Charles Conrad using a hand-held 70mm Hasselblad film camera -- created quite a stir of interest, not only regarding the Apollo program itself, but also as to the nature of the mysterious blue glow. I remember seeing that photo as a teen. Years later, I came across the photo in a set of NASA space-program images sold commercially, and later still a friend gave me a used copy of that original Life Magazine issue. On March 4, 1979, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft took the first photos of rings around Jupiter. This was the first time anyone had seen Jupiter’s rings. Because the rings are so thin and faint, it's extremely difficult to see them from Earth with ground-based telescopes. Both Venus and Mercury play the part of "evening stars" this month. At the beginning of the month they appear low on the western horizon. The moon itself joins the pair from March 18th through the 20th. The moon skims by the Pleiades star cluster and Taurus's bright red star Aldebaran on the next few evenings, March 21 through the 23rd.

Jupiter, king of the planets, rises just before midnight this month, and earlier by month end. Even through the smallest telescope or average binoculars, you should see the 4 Galilean moons, Europa, Io, Callisto and Ganymede.

The March morning sky offers dazzling views of Mars and Saturn all month long. Through a telescope, you can almost make out some of the surface features on Mars. Keep watching Mars as it travels closer to Earth. It will be closest in late July, when the red planet will appear larger in apparent diameter than it has since 2003!

On March 5, 1982, the Soviet Union's Venera 14 spacecraft landed on Venus! Venera 14 launched just five days after its identical twin, Venera 13. Both space probes spent four months traveling to Venus, and Venera 13 arrived a few days earlier. Venera 14 parachuted down to the surface of Venus and collected data on the atmosphere the whole way down. It landed about 600 miles away from Venera 13 and started beaming back images from the surface of Venus — but not for long. The high pressure and temperature at Venus killed Venera 14 in under an hour.

A new study has found that the seven planets orbiting the nearby ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 are all made mostly of rock, and some could potentially hold more water than Earth. The planets' densities, now known much more precisely than before, suggest that some of them could have up to 5 percent of their mass in the form of water — about 250 times more than Earth's oceans

The new MATISSE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) has now successfully made its first observations at the Paranal Observatory in northern Chile. MATISSE is the most powerful interferometric instrument in the world at mid-infrared wavelengths. It will use high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy to probe the regions around young stars where planets are forming as well as the regions around supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies.

Between 1969 and 1972, Apollo astronauts brought back to Earth a total of nine containers of moon material that were sealed on the lunar surface.
Two of the larger sealed samples were collected by Apollo 17 moonwalkers in December 1972. Three sealed samples from Apollo 15, 16 and 17 remain unopened.
According to several key lunar researchers, now is the right time to consider opening at least one of the still-sealed sample containers.

'Warm Saturn' Exoplanet Discovered By Astronomers

Using data from NASA's prolonged Kepler mission, known as K2, astronomers have found a new "warm Saturn" exoplanet. The newly discovered alien world, named EPIC 247098361 b, is similar in mass to Saturn, but much hotter. The finding is reported February 24 in a paper published on arXiv.org.
The new extrasolar world was first spotted by K2 as a planetary candidate during the spacecraft's Campaign 13 between March and May 2017, when it obtained the light curve of the star EPIC 247098361. In order to confirm the planetary status of the newly identified object, a team of astronomers led by Rafael Brahm of the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics in Chile has carried out follow-up observations using ground-based telescopes at ESO La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Next month, SpaceX is set to launch the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, is the next step in humanity’s ongoing effort to discover and characterize exoplanets, including planets that might host life. The spacecraft is currently scheduled to launch on a Falcon 9 on April 16 from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral.

The TESS project has its origins in a concept study at MIT in the mid-2000’s and was submitted as an Astrophysics Explorer mission finalist in 2012, as a successor program to Kepler, which was at the time in its primary mission.

THE WORSENING COSMIC RAY SITUATION: Cosmic rays are bad–and they're getting worse. That's the conclusion of a new paper just published in the research journal Space Weather. The authors, led by Prof. Nathan Schwadron of the University of New Hampshire, show that radiation from deep space is dangerous and intensifying faster than previously predicted.

The story begins four years ago when Schwadron and colleagues first sounded the alarm about cosmic rays. Analyzing data from the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) instrument onboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), they found that cosmic rays in the Earth-Moon system were peaking at levels never before seen in the Space Age. On March 7, 1962, NASA launched the first Orbiting Solar Observatory. Eight of these satellites were launched between 1962 and 1975 to study the 11-year solar cycle. Each of the satellites had two main parts called the "wheel" and the "sail." The sail contained solar panels and instruments that took measurements of the sun. The sail was mounted onto the wheel, which could rotate to make sure that the instruments were pointing in the right direction. The satellites measured things like UV light, X-rays, and gamma radiation. The data was recorded on tape and transmitted to Earth via FM telemetry.

This video pans over NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope observations of the system Arp 256, about 350 million light-years from Earth. The system consists of two spiral galaxies in an early stage of a merger. Though the two galaxies are still separated by a large distance, their shapes are already impressively disrupted by the gravitational forces.

Both galaxies show bright blue patches, which highlight regions of star formation. These regions also contain hot newborn stars. Like their distorted appearance, the bursts in star formation are also triggered by the gravitational interaction between the two galaxies.

Bennu is an asteroid that whizzes past Earth every few years. In fact, there is a chance — though a slim one — that the asteroid will collide with Earth in the near future (less than 200 years from now).

Because it flies so close to our planet, the near-Earth object (NEO) is the target of a NASA mission to collect a sample and return it to Earth. Scientists think the space rock may contain the building blocks of life.

On March 13, 1781, Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun. Before Herschel discovered Uranus, other astronomers had seen it before, but no one realized it was planet. Instead, they thought it was a star. Herschel actually thought he was looking at a comet. Because it was moving, he figured it couldn't have been a star. Herschel and other astronomers spent two years debating about whether it was a comet or a planet. In 1783, Herschel finally announced that Uranus was, in fact, a planet. But Uranus didn't receive its name until 1850. Herschel wanted to name it George's Star after King George III, but astronomers outside of England weren't cool with that. Ultimately, the German astronomer Johann Bode named it Uranus after the ancient Greek god of the sky. While the international astronomy community liked that name better than George's Star, the planet was hereby destined to forever be the butt of all solar system jokes.

Lava Tube Fly-Through

The "Cueva de los Verdes" lava tube in Lanzarote, Spain, is one of the world's largest volcanic cave complexes with a total length of about 8 km.

Geology experts from ESA's Pangaea-X campaign mapped most of the lava tube system as part of a project supported by local authorities Cabildo of Lanzarote and the University of Padova, Italy. The data was acquired in November 2017 by Leica Geosystems.

The map comes alive in great detail in 3D, helping institutions to protect the subterranean environment. The map also provides scientific data to study the origins of the tube and its peculiar formations.

Pangaea-X is a test campaign that brings together geology, high-tech survey equipment and space exploration. Learn more about the science and technology behind this campaign visiting
The central flash, caused by focussing of the starlight by deep layers in the moon's atmosphere – about 10 km above surface, can be seen half way through the occultation under the right observing conditions.

Taking advantage of improved measurements of the star's position and a few hundred more stars, provided by Gaia, the Lucky Star team has coordinated a campaign to observe this occultation.

A collaboration of professional as well as amateur astronomers observed the phenomenon at more than a hundred stations across Europe, North Africa and North America. The improved prediction of the best locations to observe, based on the specially released, preliminary data from Gaia DR2, led to twenty-five successful detections of the central flash, from Spain and Portugal to the south of France and the north of Italy.

The astronomers are now busy analysing the data collected during this campaign to learn more about the atmosphere of Triton.

The adventuring cinema archeologist Indiana Jones would be delighted to find a long-sought relic in his own backyard. Astronomers have gotten lucky enough to achieve such a quest. They identified a very rare and odd assemblage of stars that has remained essentially unchanged for the past 10 billion years. The diffuse stellar island provides valuable new insights into the origin and evolution of galaxies billions of years ago.

As far as galaxy evolution goes, this object is clearly a case of “arrested development.” The galaxy, NGC 1277, started its life with a bang long ago, ferociously churning out stars 1,000 times faster than seen in our own Milky Way today. But it abruptly went quiescent as the baby boomer stars aged and grew ever redder. Though Hubble has seen such “red and dead” galaxies in the early universe, one has never been conclusively found nearby. Where the early galaxies are so distant, they are just red dots in Hubble deep-sky images. NGC 1277 offers a unique opportunity to see one up close and personal.

Astronomers Discover Two Of The Most Powerful Quasars In The Known Universe

Using VST ATLAS and WISE surveys astronomers have identified two new bright high-redshift quasars. The newly found quasi-stellar objects, designated VST-ATLAS J158.6938-14.4211 and VST-ATLAS J332.8017-32.1036, could be helpful in improving our understanding of the evolution of the universe. The finding is reported March 4 in a paper published on arXiv.org.

Quasars with high redshift (over 6.0) are of special interest for astronomers because their ultraviolet light is absorbed by the neutral hydrogen along the line of sight; thus, they can be used to probe the intergalactic medium in the early universe. They are the most luminous and most distant, compact objects in the observable universe.

As noted in the study, VST-ATLAS J158.6938-14.4211 (J158-14 for short) has a redshift of 6.07, while VST-ATLAS J332.8017-32.1036 (J332-32 for short) was found at a redshift of 6.32. J158-14 and J332-32 have magnitudes of 19.4 and 19.7 respectively.

Moreover, the researchers have conducted a preliminary estimate of the black hole masses powering the two quasars. According to the paper, J158-14 has a black hole with a mass of about 1.8 billion solar masses and when it comes to J332-32, its black hole is approximately two billion times more massive than the sun.

As the solar minimum continued, subfreezing temperatures and snowfalls were still breaking records in February. Canada and the US experienced another arctic blast from the now split 'polar vortex', pushing temperatures in Canada to -62°C and covering much of the northern, central and eastern U.S. with heavy snow. The cold blast also descended to Europe and parts of Asia. This 'Beast from the East' brought heavy snow to much of Europe with some parts colder than the Arctic!

China was hit by heavy snow, disrupting transportation and flights, while Japan had one of its worst winters in decades. Snow also blanketed unusual places like the UAE and Morocco.

Heavy rain caused destructive floods in Indonesia, New Zealand, Cyprus and deadly mudslides in South America, while seventy rivers overflowed from the Great Lakes to Texas. Record-breaking size hail pounded Argentina, while California and Saudi Arabia were pounded by hailstorms that caused damage and disrupted traffic for hours.

The Ring of Fire continued with increased activity, volcanoes and mud volcanoes that had been dormant for decades awoke with a vengeance, triggering evacuations and disrupting the flights of thousands of travelers. Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and Mexico were also shaken this past month by significant earthquakes as the the cosmic ray grand maximum approaches.

Dry tides are becoming more common all around the world, while mass fish deaths and strandings continue to baffle scientists.

Meteor fireballs put on quite a show again this month, while the reports of unexplained loud "booms" increased all over the world.

B-52 Bomber Shot Down by a UFO

Here’s an interesting UFO story in Vietnam revolves around a crashed B-52 bomber. The paper trail for this story is vague, but it remains a common tale in UFO circles.

The incident is a part of Project Grudge, a US Air Force investigation of UFO sightings which supposedly ended in 1951. But UFO researchers believe that it was still operating in Vietnam.
In the 1970s, Green Beret Captain William English was assigned to Laos to investigate a downed B-52 bomber. The aircraft was lost under mysterious circumstances, and the US Air Force was eager to retrieve evidence from it.

Captain English successfully found the airplane, which seemed in unusually good shape. The only damage on the bomber was normal damage expected from a crash landing. When English opened the hatch, he found all the crew still strapped in their seats but horribly disfigured and mutilated. There was no other damage in the cockpit.

English collected samples and turned the bodies in for autopsy. But after the incident, the Laos government deported him. Whether or not this story is true, it is an interesting tale from the end of the Vietnam War.

The year 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory into space. The Crab Nebula was one of the first objects that Chandra examined with its sharp X-ray vision, and it has been a frequent target of the telescope ever since.

There are many reasons that the Crab Nebula is such a well-studied object. For example, it is one of a handful of cases where there is strong historical evidence for when the star exploded. Having this definitive timeline helps astronomers understand the details of the explosion and its aftermath.

In the case of the Crab, observers in several countries reported the appearance of a "new star" in 1054 A.D. in the direction of the constellation Taurus. Much has been learned about the Crab in the centuries since. Today, astronomers know that the Crab Nebula is powered by a quickly spinning, highly magnetized neutron star called a pulsar, which was formed when a massive star ran out of its nuclear fuel and collapsed. The combination of rapid rotation and a strong magnetic field in the Crab generates an intense electromagnetic field that creates jets of matter and anti-matter moving away from both the north and south poles of the pulsar. Astronomers also see an intense wind flowing out in the equatorial direction.

A new composite image adds to a scientific legacy, spanning nearly two decades, between Chandra and the Crab Nebula. We look forward to what the Crab Nebula will reveal next.

The Crab Nebula is the result of a bright supernova explosion seen by Chinese and other astronomers in the year 1054 A.D.

Since it was launched aboard the Space Shuttle in 1999, the Chandra X-ray Observatory has looked at the Crab many times.

X-ray data reveal a spinning, super-magnetic dense star that creates jets of matter and antimatter and a blizzard of energetic particles.

A new image combines X-rays from Chandra (blue and white) with optical data from Hubble (purple) and infrared data from Spitzer (pink).

This composite adds to a scientific legacy, spanning nearly two decades, between Chandra and the Crab Nebula.

On March 14, 2016, the European Space Agency's ExoMars spacecraft launched on a mission to search for life on Mars. The mission consisted of an orbiter called the Trace Gas Orbiter and a lander called Schiaparelli. The Trace Gas Orbiter would study the atmosphere of Mars while relaying communications between the lander and Earth. The two spacecraft blasted off together on a Russian Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. They spent the next seven months cruising to Mars. When they arrived, Schiaparelli separated from the orbiter and began its descent. But something went wrong when it came in for a controlled landing. Mission control lost contact with the lander and later found out that it had crashed due to a computer glitch. Despite this setback, the ExoMars mission will live on. The orbiter is still working just fine, and an ExoMars rover is scheduled to join the Trace Gas Orbiter on Mars in 2020.

Eight New 'Hot Jupiters' Discovered By Astronomers

The discovery was made by a team of researchers led by Coel Hellier of the Keele University, U.K. They used the WASP-South telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in South Africa. For the first time, scientists have ground and satellite views of STEVE (short for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), a thin purple ribbon of light. Scientists have now learned, despite its ordinary name, that STEVE may be an extraordinary puzzle piece in painting a better picture of how Earth's magnetic fields function and interact with charged particles in space.

On March 15, 1806, a meteorite fell from the sky near the town of Alais, France. Known as the Alais meteorite, this was the first object from space in which scientists discovered organic chemicals. The space rock was classified as a group CI carbonaceous chondrite and is the oldest known meteorite of its kind. Carbonaceous chondrites are extremely rare. They account for less than 5 percent of all meteorites discovered on Earth. Their chemical composition resembles the chemistry of the sun more closely than any other kind of meteorite, so they're considered the most primitive type of space rock. A Swedish chemist named Jons Jacob Berzelius analyzed a sample of the Alais meteorite and found that it contained water, clay minerals and complex carbon compounds.

Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is an imaging camera mounted at the Prime Focus of the Subaru 8.2-m telescope operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii. A consortium of astronomers from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is carrying out a three-layer, 300-night, multiband survey from 2014-2019 with this instrument. In this talk, I will focus on the HSC survey Wide Layer, which will cover 1400 square degrees in five broad bands (grizy), to a 5 sigma point-source depth of r~26. We have covered 240 square degrees of the Wide Layer in all five bands, and the median seeing in the i band is 0.60 arcseconds. This powerful combination of depth and image quality makes the HSC survey unique compared to other ongoing imaging surveys. In this talk I will describe the HSC survey dataset and the completed and ongoing science analyses with the survey Wide layer, including galaxy studies, strong and weak gravitational lensing, but with an emphasis on weak lensing. I will demonstrate the level of systematics control, the potential for competitive cosmology constraints, some early results, and describe some lessons learned that will be of use for other ongoing and future lensing surveys.

It’s the most famous prediction of perhaps the most famous genius of our time ... Stephen Hawking's theory of Hawking Radiation.

Soon after Einstein revealed his great general theory of relativity in 1915, physicists realized that it allowed for the possibility of catastrophic gravitational collapse. In places of extreme density like the dead core of a massive star, space and time could be dragged inwards to create a hole in the universe: a boundary in spacetime called an event horizon that could be entered, but from beyond which nothing could return. Once formed, there was nothing in theory or imagination that could bring material consumed back to the outside universe. These black holes should exist forever – only growing, never shrinking.

On March 16, 1966, the crewed Gemini 8 spacecraft became the first to dock with another spacecraft in space. NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott launched into orbit in their Gemini spacecraft almost three hours after the uncrewed Agena target vehicle launched separately. After a six-hour chase, the Gemini crew caught up with the Agena target vehicle, and the two spacecraft successfully docked. Then the problems started. The joined spacecraft started to tumble out of control. Assuming the problem had to do with the Agena target vehicle, they decided to undock. But shedding the extra weight actually made the Gemini spacecraft spin even faster, and it was rotating at one revolution per second. This made the astronauts pretty dizzy, but they still managed to safely execute an emergency landing.

The Kepler space telescope's prolific planet-hunting days will end soon. After finding more than 2,300 confirmed planets across its two missions, Kepler is low on fuel and will run out within several months, according to NASA engineers.

"Our current estimates are that Kepler's tank will run dry within several months — but we've been surprised by its performance before! So, while we anticipate flight operations ending soon, we are prepared to continue as long as the fuel allows," Charlie Sobeck, system engineer for the Kepler mission, said in a NASA statement.

Since 2015, a new phenomenon has started to appear in Earth's skies. People in Southern Canada have taken photos of strange aurora-like lights. But if your normal aurora has an elliptical shape, and is usually green — and, rarely, red or blue — this new sky shimmer is violet and it appears to be a curved line with a start and an end. What's even stranger is that this phenomenon can be observed much further from the north pole than a normal aurora is.

On Saint Patrick's Day in 1958, the U.S. Navy launched Vanguard 1, the first solar-powered satellite and the oldest artificial satellite currently orbiting the Earth. The main purpose of this mission was to test a new three-stage rocket. Vanguard 1 was the fourth satellite ever launched into space (following Sputniks 1 and 2 and Explorer 1). It looks a lot like a miniature version of Sputnik. Vanguard 1 was tiny compared to the satellites that came before it. It's about the size of a grapefruit and weighs only 3 pounds. Solar technology allowed the satellite to transmit signals to Earth for 7 years, while battery-powered satellites couldn't even last a month. Scientists think the satellite will deorbit by the year 2198 after spending 240 years in space.

Oldest Native American Mummy DNA Results

The Windover Archeological Site is an Early Archaic (6000 to 5000 BC) archaeological site where skeletal remains of 168 individuals were found buried in the peat at the bottom of the pond. The skeletons were well preserved because of the characteristics of peat. In addition, remarkably well-preserved brain tissue has been recovered from many skulls from the site. DNA from the brain tissue has been sequenced. The collection of human skeletal remains and artifacts recovered from Windover Pond represent among the largest finds of each type from the Archaic Period.

Archaeologists at this site were able to recover a total of 86 pieces of fabric from 37 graves. These included seven different textile weaves, which appeared to have been used for clothing, bags, matting, and possibly blankets and ponchos. Numerous other artifacts, such as atlatls and projectile points, were also found at Windover. The occupants of Windover hunted animals, fished, and gathered plants. They used bottle gourds for storage, which comprise the earliest evidence for vegetable container storage discovered in North America.

On This Day In Space | 18th March 1980 | Soviet Rocket Explosion Kills 48 People

On March 18, 1980, a Soviet rocket exploded on the launchpad and killed 48 people. The Vostok-2M rocket was about to launch a new spy satellite called Tselina-D. Military technicians were working to fuel the rocket on the launchpad at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, a top-secret spaceport a few hundred miles north of Moscow. It wasn't until three years after the explosion happened that the Soviets admitted that this secret spaceport existed. They continued to keep the deadly explosion a secret until 1989. State officials blamed the explosion on human error. But a later investigation determined the cause to be a design flaw with the rocket.

A new photo shows a swirling maelstrom on Jupiter through rose-colored glasses.

NASA's Juno spacecraft snapped the original picture on Feb. 7, during its 11th close flyby of the gas giant. At the time, Juno was 7,578 miles (12,195 kilometers) above Jupiter's cloud tops, at a latitude of 49.2 degrees north, NASA officials said.

This image, captured by the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array radio telescopes in Chile in 2016, shows a distinctive horseshoe-shaped dust cloud surrounding a star called HD142527.

The cloud has been of intense interest to astronomers ever since it was first discovered in 2013, and now researchers led by Daniel Price of Monash University in Australia think they might have at last worked out how it arises, and how it develops its shape.

Cosmic energy has been at an alarmingly high intensity for some weeks now, and it is likely that many people are feeling frazzled and exhausted.
People may be currently wondering how much more of it they can handle—and unfortunately, this isn’t settling down any time soon.Currently, there is a large, 200,000-kilometer wide, canyon-shaped coronal hole that has opened up in the sun’s atmosphere, dividing almost the entire Earth-facing hemisphere of the sun.

From this hole, on Tuesday, March 13th, a stream of high-speed solar wind (hot plasma) was ejected, and flew toward Earth at a speed faster than 600 kilometers per second. The highly charged wind has been buffeting Earth’s magnetic field (protective bubble) ever since.

Solar flares are sudden flashes of brightness that are gaseous eruptions from the sun. They release vast amounts of tremendously hot, high-energy particles and gases that eject thousands of miles from the surface of the sun. The amount of energy it takes for a flare to shoot out is equivalent to approximately 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT.

However, the Russian Academy of Science predicts that there is worse to come. Their forecast shows that they are expecting major geomagnetic storms from March 21st to the 26th.

Solar storms temporarily disturb the Earth’s magnetosphere, as solar winds and flares interact with Earth’s electromagnetic fields. Humans are also affected because we each have a personal electromagnetic field that surrounds us—an aura. Therefore, in the same way electromagnetic energy affects our planet, it can also play havoc with our own energy fields.

Although we are somewhat protected by Earth’s magnetic field, the intense, highly charged energy is believed to have a major affect on everything that exists on Earth and can greatly impact anything from emotions to electrical devices.

Solar storms are known to have a huge impact on radio communications, navigation/GPS systems, technology, and living organisms. Solar energy has been shown to change blood flow, boost adrenaline, and affect blood pressure. It also affects our sleep patterns, as mentioned previously.

One of the reasons we may currently be experiencing a peak in solar activity is that on March 20th and September 23rd each year, the Earth and sun line up so that day and night are approximately equal in length. Equinoxes are known to cause cracks in Earth’s magnetic field which stay open for hours.These solar storms are coinciding with the formation of the “equinox cracks” which many scientists believe form semi-annually during the equinox. This will open up a portal to allow the highly vibrating energy to flow in from the universe and directly impact energetic particles on Earth, including humans.

A portal allows rapid travel between dimensions of two distant locations in the universe, for example, from the sun to Earth. The portal is a temporary period of life-changing transformation which allows us the opportunity to experience with a full, conscious awakening through renewed energy, limitless possibilities, higher wisdom, increased levels of love and wisdom. This is a tremendous opportunity to align with the universe’s energy.

During solar storms, masses of luminous energy infiltrate Earth’s atmosphere, and absorbing it can be over-stimulating; so we may notice our energy—and that of people around us—feels super intense, like everyone is extra irritable, emotional, anxious, fatigued, spacey, or stressed. This is likely due to the fact that we are currently in the midst of these powerful solar storms that are emanating powerful electromagnetic energies.

Solar storms are known to desynchronise our circadian rhythm, which is the internal biological clock that controls our sleep and wake times. Our pineal glands are affected by this electromagnetic activity and produce an increase in melatonin—thus disturbing our sleep and impacting our intuition. We may have enhanced intuition and psychic awareness.

Solar storms are also believed to directly impact our nervous system, causing us to feel extra edgy, cautious, and feisty, and as though we are running on adrenaline in “fight or flight” mode. When these storms occur, we can find ourselves spun out or agitated without knowing why. We may also notice that our senses are on high alert, and that everything feels and sounds louder, brighter, stronger, and more vivid than normal.

>> Frequent anxiety, stress, or feeling panicky without clear reason.

>> Temporary loss of memories, forgetting things, misplacing items.

>> Seeing and feeling energy such as orbs, sparks, or flashes of light, noticing energy warming the palms of hands.

>> Appreciation that all life is sacred.

>> Noticing synchronicities, i.e., certain number patterns reappearing.

>> More consciously aware of other people’s energy fields and highly sensitive to negativity.

>> Wanting to spend time alone, introspection.

Geomagnetic storms are intense transformational periods that can bring mind-opening awakenings and reconnect us to internal and external universal knowledge and wisdom. To ensure we resonate with this higher energy so that our vibration is raised, we can combat the effects of solar activity by resting and taking time from our busy schedules to do the following:

The frequencies emanating from the solar storm are believed to cleanse and purify our system so that we can be free from toxic emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical blockages. The March or vernal equinox signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. This equinox does provide a hallmark for the sun’s motion in our sky, marking the passage of the sun across the celestial equator, going from south to north.

The equinox is when the Sun's rays are directly over the equator. That happens twice a year when day and night are equal lengths.

The March 2018 equinox happens on March 20 at 16:15 UTC.

In the Northern Hemisphere now, we’re enjoying earlier sunrises, later sunsets, softer winds, sprouting plants. Meanwhile, you’ll find the opposite season – later sunrises, earlier sunset, chillier winds, dry and falling leaves – south of the equator.

For all of us on this March 2018 equinox, the moon will be in a waxing crescent phase, in your western sky after sunset, with its illuminated portion pointing downward toward the planets Venus and Mercury.

Equinox Cracks" Forming In Earth’s Magnetic Field - The Sky Exploded With Auroras Last 48 Hours

The Vernal Equinox is less than 1 day away. That means one thing: Cracks are opening in Earth’s magnetic field.

Researchers have long known that during weeks around equinoxes fissures form in Earth’s magnetosphere. Solar wind can pour through the gaps to fuel bright displays of Arctic lights.

One such episode occurred on March 18th. The sky exploded with auroras. During the display, a solar wind stream flowing above 550 km/s has triggered a moderate (G2) geomagnetic storm at higher latitudes.

But at this time of year, even a gentle gust of solar wind can breach our planet’s magnetic defenses.

This is called the the “Russell-McPherron effect,” named after the researchers who first explained it. The cracks are opened by the solar wind itself. South-pointing magnetic fields inside the solar wind oppose Earth’s north-pointing magnetic field. The two, N vs. S, partially cancel one another, weakening our planet’s magnetic defenses. This cancellation can happen at any time of year, but it happens with greatest effect around the equinoxes. Indeed, a 75-year study shows that March is the most geomagnetically active month of the year, followed closely by September-October–a direct result of “equinox cracks.”

On March 19, 1964, NASA unsuccessfully attempted to launch a satellite called Beacon Explorer-A on a mission to study the ionosphere. This is a region in Earth's upper atmosphere where radiation from the sun strips the electrons off atoms and molecules, creating a layer of ions and free electrons. Beacon Explorer-A was supposed to go count all those free electrons using a radio beacon, but it never reached orbit after it launched. After a smooth liftoff from Cape Kennedy, something went wrong with the Delta rocket's third stage. The third burn was supposed to last 40 seconds, but the engines cut off after 22 seconds. Beacon Explorer-A re-entered Earth's atmosphere somewhere over the south Atlantic Ocean, and it was destroyed.

Rogue moons, torn from their planets and flung outward to drift through space, may be as common as stars in the universe, a new study finds.

Moons are common in the solar system, with Jupiter alone possessing at least 67. As such, Yu-Cian Hong, an astrophysicist at Cornell University, wanted to see how moons around distant stars might behave, she said.
