The Dark Galaxy Dragonfly 44 : A Galaxy Almost Entirely Dark Matter

Even though it is relatively nearby at 300 million light years from Earth, the galaxy, named Dragonfly 44, had been missed by astronomers for decades because it is very dim. The discovery of this dim object heralds in a new class of galaxies that have become known as ‘dark galaxies’ or ‘ultra diffuse galaxies’ because they contain relatively few stars, yet have a mass equal to our own Milky Way with hundreds of billions of stars.

It was only discovered recently, in 2015, when the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, then a small collection of 24 commercially available 400mm telephoto lenses, looked towards a region of sky in the constellation Coma.

But as astronomers looked closer using larger telescopes with specialized instruments, they realized this dim, tiny galaxy was more than meets the eye - literally. It contained so few stars. There were so few stars in this galaxy that there was no way they could all stay together as a gravitationally bound object - they would simply fly apart.

So what was keeping the stars in Dragonfly 44 together?

Astronomers had pretty good idea: dark matter.

Rare Stellar Encounter Will Trigger Space Fireworks In 2018, Says NASA

This is the longest-period binary system containing a radio pulsar. A pulsar, known as J2032. When astronomers started watching it, they had no idea how dynamic was. They still don't know what it's capable of.
This pulsar has been accelerating for the last ten years, and it's still speeding up.

When it passes through the companion star's disk, we're gonna see some serious gamma-ray emission.
The pulsar, known as J2032 is the crushed core of a massive star that exploded as a supernova.
It is a magnetized ball about 12 miles across, or about the size of Washington, weighing almost twice the sun's mass and spinning seven times a second.

The massive star tugging on the pulsar is named MT91 213. Classified as a Be star, the companion is 15 times the mass of the sun and shines 10,000 times brighter.
Be stars drive strong outflows, called stellar winds, and are embedded in large disks of gas and dust.

Astronomers are expecting high-energy explosions when pulsar J2032 swings around its massive companion star in early 2018. The pulsar will plunge through a disk of gas and dust surrounding the star, triggering cosmic fireworks.

Several features combine to make this an exceptional binary. Out of six similar systems where the massive star uses hydrogen as its central energy source, J2032's has the greatest combined mass, the longest orbital period, and, at a distance of about 5,000 light-years, is closest to Earth.

Astronomers think the supernova explosion that created the pulsar also kicked it into its eccentric orbit, nearly tearing the binary apart in the process.
A study of the system led by Lyne and including Ray and Stappers was published June 16 in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

On March 20, 1987, NASA launched an Indonesian communications satellite called Palapa B2-P. It would later become the first satellite owned by the Philippines. Almost 10 years after the satellite launched into orbit, Pasifik Satelit Nusantara — the Indonesian company that owned it — sold it to the Mabuhay Satellite Corporation in the Philippines. The country had been trying to establish its own satellite network for decades. They finally bought the Palapa satellite when President Fidel Ramos said he wanted one in time for an international forum that the country was hosting later that year. The president got his way, and the country's first satellite was moved into its new orbit with three months to spare. Mabuhay changed the satellite's name from Palapa to Agila, which means "eagle" in Filipino.

"Time-lapse" animation of the sun's position from the perspective of a viewer on earth in the northern hemisphere, seen at noon each day of the year as earth orbits the sun. The background of stars "behind the sun" will change as a function of earth's movement around the sun on its orbital path.

The sun's elevation relative to the celestial equator at noon each day will grow higher and higher after we pass the point of winter solstice (lowest point) and progress towards the point of summer solstice (highest point). The sun's elevation at noon relative to the celestial equator will grow progressively lower after we pass through the point of summer solstice and head back "down" to the winter solstice. This elevation change is a function of the fact that earth's axis is tilted (oblique) to the plane of the orbit around the sun (the ecliptic plane) -- also known as the obliquity of the axis or the "axial tilt."

The point of equinox occurs when the sun's path crosses through the celestial equator (ninety degrees down from the north celestial pole, and ninety degrees up from the south celestial pole). This will take place twice a year, once on the way down from summer solstice to winter solstice (the fall equinox) and once again on the way back up from winter solstice towards summer solstice.

This short video may help you to visualize and understand what is taking place. You can see all the way down to the south celestial pole, because the earth has been made "transparent" or invisible, even though the perspective shown is still that of someone standing in the northern hemisphere. The sun at noon each day moves through the background constellations of the zodiac (because as we orbit the sun, the "line of sight" from earth to sun and beyond will point in a different direction as earth continues along its orbit throughout the year). Because of the axial tilt, the elevation of the sun at noon will grow higher in the summer and lower in the winter. The sun will cross the celestial equator (the "zero-degree line" of declination) at the two equinoxes, once on the way "up" and once on the way back "down."

On March 21, 1965, NASA launched the Ranger 9 spacecraft on a mission to crash into a lunar crater. Ranger 9 was the last flight of NASA's Ranger Program. The spacecraft would study the crater Alphonsus by crashing directly into it and taking pictures along the way. After launching on an Atlas-Agena rocket, Ranger 9 spent nearly three days making its way over to the moon. During the last 20 minutes of its flight, it took around 6,000 high-quality images of the moon. It then plowed into the Alphonsus crater at a speed of nearly 9,000 miles per hour. Images and videos from Ranger 9's descent were broadcast on live television to millions of viewers in the United States.

Some distant objects in our solar system bear the gravitational imprint of a small star's close flyby 70,000 years ago, when modern humans were already walking the Earth, a new study suggests.

In 2015, a team of researchers announced that a red dwarf called Scholz's star apparently grazed the solar system 70,000 years ago, coming closer than 1 light-year to the sun. For perspective, the sun's nearest stellar neighbor these days, Proxima Centauri, lies about 4.2 light-years away. The astronomers came to this conclusion by measuring the motion and velocity of Scholz's star — which zooms through space with a smaller companion, a brown dwarf or "failed star" — and extrapolating backward in time.

Sixty years ago, a grapefruit-sized aluminium sphere with six antennas and some tiny solar cells was launched into Earth orbit. The Vanguard 1 satellite is still up there and is the oldest human-made object in space. It’s our first piece of space archaeology.

Other early satellites – such as Sputnik 1, the first satellite to leave Earth in 1957, and Explorer 1, the first US satellite – have long since re-entered the atmosphere and burnt up.

Vanguard 1’s legacy, as we enter the seventh decade of space travel, is a new generation of small satellites changing the way we interact with space.

Episode Eight | More Than Meets The Eye

We will also discuss in detail asteroids, their material makeup, and the various categories they fall into and why. We also look at their origins as well as what it could mean for our future and the future of the universe.

A confirmed Earth-sized exoplanet, Ross 128b is thought to be a likely rocky exoplanet, which orbits within the inner habitable zone of the red dwarf Ross 128 at a distance of about 11 light-years from Earth and is considered one of the best candidates for habitability.
The planet is only 35% more massive than Earth, receives only 38% more sunlight, and is expected to be a temperature suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, if it has an atmosphere.
The exoplanet was found using a decade’s worth of radial velocity data with the HARPS spectrograph (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Kepler 446b

Kepler-446b is the first of the three exoplanets discovered around the star Kepler-446, in the constellation of Lyra, 391.4 light years from Earth. Their finding was confirmed in 2015, after the Kepler Space Telescope detected several transits of the object in front of its star. It has a radius almost within the limit established by experts that separates terrestrial bodies from gaseous ones, therefore, making it a possibly rocky planet.
If confirmed to be a terrestrial planet, Kepler 446b could possess canyons, craters, mountains and volcanoes and most importantly, secondary atmospheres.

Asteroids

The term asteroids has historically been applied to any astronomical object orbiting the Sun that did not show the disc of a planet and was not observed to have the characteristics of an active comet.
Millions of asteroids are thought to be the shattered remnants of planetesimals, bodies within the young Sun’s solar nebula that never grew large enough to become planets.
The large majority of known asteroids orbit in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, or are co-orbital with Jupiter, however, other orbital families exist with significant populations, including the near-Earth objects.
We will discuss all types of asteroids, including Near Earth Objects, Centaurs, Kuiper Belt Objects, Scattered Disc Objects, Sednoids and Oort Cloud Objects..

What do the first stars in the universe, dark matter, and superior siege engines have in common?

Sometimes space news sneaks by without getting much attention. Not everything wows like gravitational waves or spacefaring sportscars. That’s the case with the recent discovery of earliest stars in the universe. In a Nature paper published a few weeks ago, Judd Bowman and collaborators report a signal from the very first stars to form in our universe. The same result also hints at brand new physics that may help explain the nature of dark matter. This result flew under the radar in part because it’s a subtle and clever result that requires a bit of interpretation. Today we’re doing a Space Time Journal Club to explain this discovery. We’ll follow that with the solution to our recent trebuchet challenge question.

On March 22, 1997, a super bright comet by the name of Hale-Bopp made its closest approach to Earth. It was bright enough for people to see without telescopes or binoculars for over 18 months. Comet Hale-Bopp still holds the record for being visible to the naked eye for longer than any other comet, and it was probably the most-viewed comet in history. It passed by Earth at a safe distance of about 120 million miles before continuing its orbit around the sun. As it got closer to the sun, its two blue and white tails grew bigger and brighter. By the time it made it to the sun on April 1, it was shining brighter than every star in the sky except for Sirius.

Eruptions from the Sun cause Aurora and are the drivers of space weather throughout the solar system.

Creating beautiful night time displays and interesting features in the atmospheres of outer planets

like Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus, space weather can also disrupt communications

on Earth and damage power grid equipment. But understanding space weather is complex and requires a 3 dimensional understanding of the magnetic structure of solar eruptions and how they propagate outwards. How is that done? By combining data from several spacecraft spread around Earth’s orbit and constructing 3D computer models a team of researchers is examining what happens when an ejection occurs and creates a shock wave. In particular, they are examining data from ESA/NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)and the twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) satellites.

The discovery of rocky and complex comet nuclei was an explicit prediction of the electric comet theory, which has proposed for decades that comets are neither dirty snowballs nor billions of years old. Rather, the chief principles of the Thunderbolts project have proposed that comets were recently electrically blasted from the surfaces of planets and moons. This is my true story. Terry Lovelace, a 64 year-old lawyer and former assistant attorney general. In 2012 a routine x-ray of my leg found an anomalous bit of metal the size of a fingernail with two tiny wires attached. What followed were horrific nightmares, spontaneous recall and intrusive thoughts surrounding a 1977 camping trip I took with a friend to Devils Den State Park in Northern Arkansas. For fear of losing my job and my standing in the legal community I've kept this secret for 40 years. But the 2012 discovery of this object, one and one-half inches deep in my thigh, initiated a flood of nightmares I could not control.

My poor health and the horrific memories were the catalyst to come forward and finally disclose what happened back in 1977. My friend and I were on a two-day camping trip to photograph eagles and wildlife. Rather than stay in the campground we chose to drive deep into an isolated area and set-up our camp on a high plateau that offered a scenic view of the wilderness. Late in the evening of our first night in camp a group of three very bright stars in the western sky caught our attention. Arranged in a triangle configuration we speculated as to what it could be? We eliminated aircraft lights due to the triangle configuration. Then it moved. The three stars rotated as if on an axis and slowly ascended upward. As it rose the three points of light spread apart, each equidistant to the others.

The stars grew larger and brighter. As the triangle passed over stars they would blink-out for a moment and then blink-back again as it moved over them. The area inside the triangle was black, darker than the night sky. As the points expanded they were eventually devouring entire fields of stars as it traveled higher and moved closer to our camp. It eventually halted directly over us. It was huge. A third of the sky was covered by this black triangle overhead without a single star in between the three points. It was as if someone had cut an enormous triangle out of a sky filled with a billion stars. It descended until it was about thirty feet over the floor of the meadow. The size of the object was unbelievable. Each side of the triangle was a city block in length. I estimated its height at fifty feet or more.

The size of a five story office building it sat motionless above the floor of the meadow. What followed was a horrific abduction experience. We both suffered badly from burns and dehydration and were hospitalized for two nights. I was interviewed by special agents from the USAF Security Police's "OSI" or Office of Special Investigations. They mistakenly believed I had photographed the object and I was viciously interrogated by two of their special agents. They demanded my film. My home and car were searched by consent and I was hypnotized to assist my recall. It was a nightmare that left my wife and I sour on the whole UFO and the allegations surrounding our experience.

I never intended to tell anyone. But the events of 2012 opened a door to memories about the abduction experience I had long forgotten and had no desire to even remember. In 2016 and in poor health I decided it was the right time to disclose everything I knew and everything we experienced. The piece of metal in my leg was the genesis of this story. There is so much more that happened.

Terry Lovelace is a six-year veteran of the USAF. He completed a bachelor's degree in Psychology at Park University in 1979. He later earned a Juris Doctor at the University of Michigan Law School, TMC campus in Lansing, Michigan. He passed the Michigan Bar Examination on his first attempt. His legal career began in private practice, handling a variety of civil litigation and criminal defense cases. He entered public service as an Assistant Attorney General and later as General Counsel for LBJ Tropical Medical Center in the US Territory of American Samoa. He retired in 2012 as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Vermont.

On March 23, 1840, a New Yorker named John William Draper became the first person to take a photo of the moon. Draper was a doctor, scientist and photographer who studied photochemistry to come up with better ways to take pictures. Before Draper photographed the moon, another photographer Louis Daguerre had tried to do the same, but his image came out fuzzy. Capturing the moon in a so-called daguerreotype image involved long exposures, and Daguerre had some technical difficulties while tracking the moon's movement with his telescope. Draper's first successful photo also took several tries. He took a 20-minute exposure with a 5-inch telescope to create a daguerreotype of the moon, and he publicly announced his results on March 23.

Astronomers at Lomonosov Moscow State University have recently detected the formation of a new black hole. The discovery is reported in The Astronomer's Telegram and aptly dedicated it to Stephen Hawking, who extensively studied such mysterious regions in space.

One of the university's MASTER Global Robotic Net telescopes in the Canary Islands, Spain picked up an explosion of gamma rays indicating the death of a star and the birth of a new black hole.

Two Blue Moons in one year seem to belie the famous statement: Once in a Blue Moon. And in recent years – with more than one definition for Blue Moons – Blue Moons seem to happen pretty often. Yet it’s indeed quite rare to have two Blue Moons in a single calendar year. It last happened in 1999 and won’t happen again until 2037.

The out-of-control Chinese space station will crash down back to Earth over the next few days, experts have said.

According to the European Space Agency's Space Debris Office in Darmstadt, Germany, debris from Tiangong-1 will splash down between March 30 and April 2 across the northern hemisphere.

The space agency said these dates were "highly variable" and that it would be offering revised forecasts every couple of days.

"At no time will a precise time/location prediction from ESA be possible," it explained in a statement .

"This forecast was updated approximately weekly through to mid-March, and is now being updated every 1~2 days."

On March 25, 1655, Saturn's moon Titan was discovered by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens (a name that you've probably heard mispronounced as "Hoy-gens"). Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and it was the first of 62 moons to be found orbiting Saturn. Huygens discovered Titan using a telescope he designed himself. While looking at Saturn's rings, he noticed a bright and tiny dot nearby. He suspected it was a moon, but just to be sure, he kept watching it for a few days. He confirmed that the tiny speck was orbiting Saturn and therefore must have been a moon. More than 300 years later, the European Space Agency sent a spacecraft to Titan and named it after him.

Climate engineering is by far the greatest source of nanoparticle contamination, there is no place to hide. Is the military industrial complex preparing to initiate their final options?
Many, unfortunately feel paralyzed at the totality of what we collectively face. Though such feelings are certainly understandable, we must resist this form of self imposed paralysis. Though we face immense challenges, we are not helpless and those perpetrating the destruction are not invincible. On This Day In Space | 26th March 1958 | U.S. Army Launches Explorer 3 Satellite

On March 26, 1958, the United States launched its third satellite into space. Explorer 3 was almost identical to Explorer 1, which was the first satellite the U.S. ever launched. Explorer 3 launched on a Juno I rocket from Cape Canaveral and entered an eccentric orbit. This means it was following a long elliptical path around the Earth. Its payload included a cosmic ray counter and a micrometeorite detector. The data from Explorer 3 and Explorer 1 led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt. This is a region around the Earth where charged particles from the sun get trapped by Earth's magnetic field. Explorer 3 spent 93 days orbiting the Earth before its orbit decayed.

Astronomers have witnessed a blazing supernova explosion that faded away 10 times faster than expected.

A supernova is the violent death of a massive star, typically occurring when it exhausts its fuel supply and collapses under its own weight, generating a powerful shockwave that blasts light and material out into space.

Supernovae often blaze so brightly that they briefly outshine all the other stars in their host galaxy. They show off for months on end — in 1054, a supernova could be seen during the day for three weeks and only disappeared completely after two years. Episode Nine | Mysterious Bursts In The Universe

Then, we take a closer look at Fast Radio Bursts and associated phenomena throughout the universe. We explore how they were first discovered, and discuss the possibilities of where they came from, how they may have been produced and what this means for the future of extraterrestrial life in the distance universe.

WD 1145+017

Also known as EPIC 201563164, this is a white dwarf star located approximately 570 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Virgo and was the first white dwarf to be observed with a transiting planetary mass object orbiting around it.
The supposed planetesimal, WD 1145+017 b, has a 4.5 hour orbit, and is being ripped apart by the star and is a remnant of the former planetary system that the star hosted before becoming a white dwarf.
It is the first observation of a planetary object being shredded by a white dwarf. Several other large pieces have been seen in orbit as well. All the various larger pieces have orbits of 4.5 to 4.9 hours. Rocky material is raining down onto the star, and showing up in the star’s spectrum.
The system was detected by the Kepler space telescope in its extended K2 mission. Though the system was not a target of interest, it was within the field of view of observing sessions, and analysis of the observed data revealed the system.

Kepler 442b

Kepler 442b is a confirmed near-Earth-sized exoplanet, likely rocky, orbiting within the habitable zone of the K-type main-sequence star Kepler-442, about 1,120 light-years (342 parsecs) from Earth in the constellation Lyra.
Kepler-442b orbits its host star with an orbital period of 112.3 days and an orbital radius of about 0.4 times that of Earth’s and receives about 70% of the sunlight that Earth receives from the Sun.
It has an equilibrium temperature of 233 K (-40 °C; -40 °F) and the surface gravity would be 30% stronger than that of Earth, assuming a rocky composition similar to that of Earth.

Fast Radio Bursts

In radio astronomy, a fast radio burst (FRB) is a high-energy astrophysical phenomenon of unknown origin manifested as a transient radio pulse lasting only a few milliseconds. The first FRB was discovered by Duncan Lorimer and his student David Narkevic in 2007 when they were looking through archival pulsar survey data, and it is therefore commonly referred to as Lorimer Burst.
Many FRBs have since been found, including a repeating FRB.
When the FRBs are polarized, it indicates that they are emitted from a source contained within an extremely powerful magnetic field. The origin of the FRBs has yet to be determined, though proposals for its origin range from a rapidly rotating neutron star and a black hole to extraterrestrial intelligence.
Fast radio bursts are bright, unresolved (pointsource-like), broadband (spanning a large range of radio frequencies), millisecond flashes found in parts of the sky outside the Milky Way. Unlike many radio sources the signal from a burst is detected in a short period of time with enough strength to stand out from the noise floor. The burst usually appears as a single spike of energy without any change in its strength over time. The bursts last for a period of several milliseconds (thousandths of a second). The bursts come from all over the sky, and are not concentrated on the plane of the Milky Way. Known FRB locations are biased by the parts of the sky that the observatories can image.

On March 27, 1989, the Soviet Union's Phobos 2 mission to Mars' moons ended in failure. But the whole mission was definitely not a failure. Phobos 2 arrived in Mars orbit two months earlier and had been studying Mars and Phobos, the larger of the planet's two moons. During that time, it beamed 37 pictures of Phobos back to Earth. For the final phase of its mission, the spacecraft was getting ready to drop off two small landers on Phobos. One lander was actually something called a "hopper" that could move around on the moon's surface. As Phobos 2 made its way over to Phobos to deploy the landers, mission control suddenly lost contact with it, and the mission was lost. The cause of this failure was determined to be a computer error.

Once it reenters and breaks up, what is the risk that any pieces reach ground?

Tiangong-1 is a large spacecraft comparable in size and mass to other, frequently used space stations and cargo vessels such as ESA’s ATV, the Japanese HTV, Russian Progress and American Dragon or Cygnus.

From monitoring the controlled reentries of those types of spacecraft, it can be surmised that Tiangong-1 will break up during its atmospheric re-entry and that some parts will survive the process and reach the surface of Earth.

Given the uncontrolled nature of this reentry event, the zone over which fragments might fall stretches over a curved ellipsoid that is thousands of kilometres in length and tens of kilometres wide. While a wide area could be affected, it is important to point out that a large part of the Earth is covered by water or is uninhabited.

Hence the personal probability of being hit by a piece of debris from the Tiangong-1 is actually 10 million times smaller than the yearly chance of being hit by lightning.

In the history of spaceflight, no casualties due to falling space debris have ever been confirmed.

For more than a generation, astronomers have been waiting for the James Webb Space Telescope, NASA’s successor to the iconic Hubble Space Telescope. On Tuesday they learned they will have to wait even longer, as agency officials revealed Webb’s launch date has slipped from spring of 2019 to approximately May of 2020—a delay that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars, breaching the $8.8 billion telescope’s Congressionally-mandated cost cap and requiring legislators to either provide more funding or abandon the project.

On March 28, 1963 NASA launched the first stage booster of its new Saturn 1 rocket on a fourth and final test flight. This uncrewed suborbital flight helped pave the way for astronauts to launch to the moon. After this initial test phase, NASA started launching test flights with a live second stage and boilerplate versions of the Apollo Command/Service Module. This test flight, designated SA-4, carried a dummy second stage to test the aerodynamics of the real second stage. Another thing NASA tested during this flight was a new system to deal with engine failure. One of the eight engines was programmed to shut off mid-flight. Fuel from the "failed" engine was then re-routed to the other engines so the rocket could keep going.

Nearby Earth-Like Planet Appears To Be "Covered" In Water

A team of astronomers from 11 countries, led by researchers at the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA), were able to determine the precise mass of two small exoplanets orbiting the variable star HD 106315.

These two planets were previously detected by the Kepler satellite (NASA) via the transit method, which allowed researchers to determine the diameter of the planets. HD 106315b has a period of 9,5 days and a diameter of 2,44 times the diameter of the Earth, while HD 106315c has an orbital period of about 21 days, and a diameter 4,35 times the diameter of the Earth.

Using data from a large observing program with the HARPS spectrograph (ESO), the IA team estimated the mass of the smaller planet HD 106315 b to be 12,6 times that of the Earth, and the density to be 4,7 g/cm3. For the larger planet, HD 106315 c, the derived mass is 15,2 times that of the Earth, with a density of 1,01 g/cm3. These values indicate that planet "c" has a thick hydrogen-helium envelope, while a detailed investigation of planet "b," using planetary interior models, indicates at up to 50 percent of rocky material and 9—50 percent of water, making it a water world.

On March 29, 1807, the German astronomer Heinrich Olbers discovered the asteroid Vesta. Vesta is the second-largest body in the asteroid belt and is surpassed in size only by the dwarf planet Ceres. To look for asteroids, astronomers would draw sky charts every night and look for spots that moved. Sunlight reflecting off the asteroids can make them look like faint stars, but unlike stars, the asteroids didn't have a fixed location in the sky. Vesta was the fourth object to be discovered in the region between Mars and Jupiter, which we now know as the asteroid belt. Olbers and other astronomers thought the asteroid belt might be the remains of a hypothetical planet that was either smashed to pieces by a collision or ripped apart by Jupiter's gravity.

The discovery of thousands of planets around stars other than our Sun has revived age-old questions on how these exo-planets form and which chemical ingredients are available to build them. Chemistry starts in the cold and tenuous clouds between the stars. In spite of the extremely low temperatures and densities, these clouds contain a surprisingly rich and interesting chemistry, as evidenced by the detection of nearly 200 different molecules. Examples of recent developments in astrochemistry will be presented, with special emphasis on topics that Alex Dalgarno has opened up (i.e., most of astrochemistry!).

New facilities such as ALMA and soon JWST will allow us to zoom in on dense cloud cores and planetary system construction sites with unprecedented sharpness and sensitivity. Spectral scans of young disks contain tens of thousands of rotational lines, revealing water and a surprisingly rich variety of organic materials, including simple sugars and high abundances of deuterated species. How are these prebiotic molecules formed and can they end up on new planets? A comparison with recent results from the Rosetta mission to comet 67 P/C-G in our own Solar System provides part of the clue. These recent results leave no doubt on the answer to the famous question asked by Dalgarno in 1986 `Is astrochemistry useful?'.

On March 30, 2017, SpaceX launched and landed a used rocket for the first time. This was a huge step forward in SpaceX's plight to develop fully reusable rockets and reduce launch costs. The Falcon 9 rocket had completed a previous mission almost a year earlier, when it launched SpaceX's robotic Dragon cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station. The rocket booster then landed vertically on one of SpaceX's drone ships in the Atlantic Ocean, and this was the first successful drone ship landing for SpaceX. The company refurbished the rocket to prepare it for a second flight. This time the Falcon 9 launched a communications satellite called SES-10. It lifted off from Kennedy Space Center and stuck another awesome drone-ship landing after delivering the satellite into orbit.

To uncover the mysteries of the universe, astronomers are becoming greedy, making more observations than they can possibly analyze manually. Large photometric surveys from space telescopes like Kepler and the future TESS are no exception and today modern astronomers use artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to help them reveal the existence of exoplanets hidden in many years of observations of hundreds of thousands of stars. For this SETI Talk, we invited two researchers involved in the Kepler mission and AI to discuss the potential of neural networks to transform astronomy. Jeff Smith, Data scientist at the SETI Institute, has developed data processing and planet detection algorithms for Kepler since 2010 and is now involved in developing the pipeline for the future TESS mission. Chris Shallue, a senior software engineer at Google AI has used a neural network to analyze archival data from the Kepler Space Telescope to reveal the existence of two unknown exoplanets, named Kepler-90i and Kepler-80g. After presenting their recent work, we will discuss the impact of this new mode of scientific discovery, where artificial intelligence can assist humans in mapping out parts of the galaxy that have not yet been fully revealed.

Chris Shallue is a Senior Research Software Engineer on the Google AI team in Mountain View, California. His research is currently focused on machine learning techniques for identifying planets in data collected by the NASA Kepler space telescope. He also works on image captioning, natural language modeling and machine learning theory. Chris was previously a member of the Google Display Ads team where he worked on ad selection and personalization for GMail and Google Maps. Prior to joining Google, Chris was teaching, studying and researching mathematics.

Dr. Jeffrey Smith began his academic passion in the field of High Energy Accelerator Physics. His Ph.D. thesis was on the design of the International Linear Collider (ILC), a 22 mile-long electron-positron accelerator that will complement the discoveries being made at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. After Cornell, Jeff joined the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University to continue his work on the ILC and also to develop upgrade hardware for the LHC. After a successful career looking into the tiniest of inner-spaces Jeff decided to look up to the stars. Dr. Smith, now at the SETI Institute, develops data processing and planet detection algorithms for the Kepler and TESS Missions. Eking out planet signals in the Kepler data has proven to be a challenging and rewarding endeavor but looking toward the future, Dr. Smith is involved with developing new methods for use with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a new NASA planet finding mission to find Earth’s nearest cousins in a our galactic back yard.

On March 31, 1962, NASA approved the design of the new Gemini spacecraft. This small capsule could carry two astronauts into space at a time. NASA created the Gemini program to help the U.S. get ready for the Apollo missions that would later send astronauts to the moon. The Gemini spacecraft was designed by the Canadian engineer Jim Chamberlin and built by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. The design was pretty much a bigger version of the capsules NASA used for Project Mercury. Each capsule was shaped like a bell and measured about 19 feet long and 10 feet wide. Over the course of 10 missions, 16 astronauts flew to space in these cramped capsules.

March Blue Moon will also have something unusual associated with it: It will be a "Paschal" Moon.

Spring began on March 20, and 11 days later, the moon turns full. So this is also the first full moon of spring, and as such, it's designated as the Paschal Moon. The first Sunday after the Paschal Moon is usually designated as Easter Sunday, as will indeed be the case on the very next day, April 1.

But there is more ...
The world is watching as Chinese space station Tiangong-1 hurtles toward Earth and makes a fiery reentry. Chances that space debris will hurt anybody are extremely slim, although when and where the space station’s remains will land is still unknown.

The reentry may appear as multiple bright streaks moving across the sky in the same direction. Due to the relatively large size of the object, it is expected that there will be many pieces reentering together, some of which may survive reentry and land on the Earth’s surface.

Tiangong-1 is currently predicted to reenter the Earth’s atmosphere around April 1st, 2018 16:15 UTC ± 9 hours.
This prediction was performed by The Aerospace Corporation on 2018 March 30.

On April 1, 1960, the U.S. launched its first weather satellite into orbit. The satellite was named TIROS-1, which is short for Television Infrared Observation Satellite. TIROS-1 launched on a Thor-Able rocket from Cape Canaveral and entered a polar orbit, which enabled it to see the entire globe. It watched the Earth from space for 78 days before an electrical power failure cut its mission short. The satellite was equipped with TV cameras and video recorders that transmitted images of Earth's cloud coverage directly to ground stations. This mission enabled the first accurate weather forecasts based on data and images from space. It also showed scientists that satellites could be useful tools for studying the Earth.

April Night Sky Events : Saturn, Mars Conjunction, Moon, Jupiter & The Brilliant Lyrid Meteor Shower

You won't want to miss red Mars and golden Saturn in the south-southeast morning skies this month. Mars shines a little brighter than last month. By the 7th, the moon joins the pair. From a dark sky you may see some glow from the nearby Milky Way.

Midmonth, start looking for Lyrid meteors, which are active from April 14 through the 30th. They peak on the 22nd. In the early morning sky, a patient observer will see up to more than 20 meteors per hour. North hemisphere observers should see good rates on the nights before and after this peak.

A bright first quarter moon plays havoc with sky conditions, but Lyra will be high overhead after the moon sets at midnight, so that's the best time to look for Lyrids.

Through a telescope, Jupiter's clouds belts and zones are easy to see.
Watch the Great Red Spot transit--or cross--the visible (Earth-facing) disk of Jupiter every 8 hours. Juno's JunoCam citizen science team is creating exciting images of Jupiter's features based on the latest spacecraft data.

Next month Jupiter is at opposition--when it rises at sunset, sets at sunrise, and offers great views for several months.

On April 2, 1963, the Soviet Union launched the Luna 4 spacecraft to attempt the first-ever soft landing on the moon. The launch was a success, but Luna 4 never actually made it to the moon. One day after Luna 4 launched, it was supposed to fire its rocket engines to help steer it toward the moon. But it wasn't able to complete this midcourse correction, because the spacecraft's navigation system was malfunctioning. Mission control wasn't able to orient the spacecraft so that the engine burn would send it in the right direction. This error caused Luna 4 to miss the moon by more than 5,000 miles. It ended up in a solar orbit somewhere between the Earth and Mars.

Astronomers have used Hubble to make an incredible discovery — they have observed the most distant star ever seen. The bright blue star existed only 4.4 billion years after the Big Bang. This incredible distant star allows astronomers to learn more about the formation and evolution of stars in the early Universe.

This video shows the galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+223. Thanks to a lucky alignment between the cluster, a dense object within it and a distant star, the image of the distant star was magnified by a factor of 2000, making it visible by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

Like the galaxy in which the star is located, the star is actually visible several times. However, the light from the second image of the star was redirected by another massive object in the cluster and only became visible when this object moved out of the line of sight.

If the weather is clear in your area the next two nights (April 2-3) check out the southeast sky late at night and before dawn breaks. You'll see an eye-catching sight.

A waning gibbous moon will be visible against the darkening sky and hovering below Earth's nearest neighbor will be a brilliant, silvery white "star". But this "star" is actually the King planet Jupiter.

Because the moon and Jupiter will be the two brightest objects in the sky tonight, they'll likely attract the attention of even those who aren't consciously looking up.

By the way, Jupiter is not the sky’s brightest planet. That honor belongs to Venus, which shines much more brilliantly than Jupiter ever does. In early April 2018, Venus is low in your western sky just after sunset and soon follows the sun beneath the western horizon.

On April 4, 1968, NASA launched the final uncrewed test flight of its Saturn V rocket. The Apollo 6 mission demonstrated that the Saturn V rocket and the Apollo spacecraft were ready to send astronauts into space. On top of the rocket was the Apollo Command and Service Module and a boilerplate version of the Lunar Module. While the mission did encounter some problems, it was deemed successful enough for astronauts to be able to fly afterwards. A few minutes after launch, oscillation in some of the rocket engines caused internal fuel lines to break. This made some of the engines shut down early, but the other engines made up for this by burning longer. The spacecraft ended up in a slightly different orbit than NASA originally planned, but NASA still called the mission a success.

NASA Awards Contract To Lockheed Martin To Build X-Plane

NASA has taken another step toward re-introducing supersonic flight with the award Tuesday of a contract for the design, build and testing of a supersonic aircraft that reduces a sonic boom to a gentle thump. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company of Palmdale, California, was selected for the Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator contract valued at $247.5 million with work going through Dec. 31, 2021.

Under this contract, Lockheed Martin will complete the design and fabrication of an experimental aircraft, known as an X-plane, which will cruise at 55,000 feet at a speed of about 940 mph and, instead of a sonic boom, create a sound only about as loud as a car door closing in the distance equivalent to approximately 75 Perceived Level decibel (PLdB).

Four hundred years later, the Voyager and Galileo space probes took stunning images of Europa, revealing an icy surface crisscrossed by linear fractures. Four years ago, astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope found evidence for plumes of water emerging from Europa’s icy surface. Ultraviolet spectroscopy detected emission indicative of water, and ultraviolet imaging of Europa as it transits Jupiter showed absorption patches suggestive of plumes. If there is liquid water on Europa, will future missions to Europa find evidence of life?

Roving On Mars: Revving Up For Future Exploration Of The Red Planet

Orbiters, followed by rovers sent to Mars, have yielded a dramatic increase in knowledge about Mars over the past decade. Today thanks to several years of data collected in situ and remotely we have a better understanding of its geology and habitability potential. Three SETI Institute planetary scientists who have dedicated their career to the study of the red planet will tell us what we have learned from those studies, and what the next steps are in the exploration of Mars with the next generation of rovers. Janice Bishop will introduce the candidate landing sites for upcoming martian rovers. She will focus on the mineralogy determined from the CRISM spectrometer at Mars and what that can tell us about Mars’ early environment. Ginny Gulick will describe the fluvial morphology/water history of these sites as seen by the HiRISE and CTX cameras. Finally, Pablo Sobron will address the instruments scheduled for the Mars2020 and ExoMars rovers and how SuperCam, Sherlock and the ExoMars Raman/LIBS instrument will be used to explore mineralogy and organics at the future landing sites.

janice bishopDr. Janice Bishop is a chemist and planetary scientist at the SETI Institute who explores the planet Mars using reflectance spectroscopy at visible and infrared wavelengths. Her investigations of CRISM data of Mars are revealing clays and sulfates in the ancient rocks that document the geochemical environment and climate at the time the minerals formed. Dr. Bishop studies the spectral fingerprints of minerals and rocks in the lab in order to generate a spectral library for identification of these in the Martian data. Her research also involves collecting and studying Mars analog rocks and soils at a variety of locations including volcanic islands, cold deserts, hydrothermal regions, acidic aqueous sites, and meteorites which are the only Martian samples available on Earth to date.

Virginia GulickDr. Ginny Gulick is a Senior Research Scientist at the SETI Institute, who examines erosional features on Mars, looking for the tell-tale signs of running water. Ginny is part of the HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) team that directs the high resolution camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), still busy snapping pictures of this alien landscape. In addition to these research efforts, Ginny is heavily into education. She has led the development of a web-based, image target suggestion tool which will allow anyone (especially students) to offer their opinions as to which martian features should be photographed with the MRO.

PabloDr. Pablo Sobron is a research scientist at the SETI Institute who has strong interests in robotic space exploration and comparative analogue science - the study of places on Earth that are similar to environments on other planets and moons. Pablo received his Ph.D in Physics from the University of Valladolid, Spain, in 2008. To date, he has lead or collaborated on over 20 projects focused on the development of instruments and data processing tools for missions to explore the Solar System, and on fundamental research. These projects have been sponsored by the European Space Agency, Canadian Space Agency, and NASA, among others.

A Tour of the Cold Front in the Perseus Cluster

Winter often brings many intense and powerful storms, with cold fronts sweeping across many parts of the globe. There are, however, even bigger weather systems. For example, astronomers have discovered cold fronts in space that are millions of light years in extent and older than the Solar System.

For example, researchers used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to study a cold front located in the Perseus galaxy cluster that extends for about two million light years, or about 10 billion billion miles.

Galaxy clusters are the largest and most massive objects in the Universe that are held together by gravity. In between the hundreds or even thousands of galaxies in a cluster, there are vast reservoirs of super-heated gas that glow brightly in X-ray light.

The cold front in the Perseus cluster consists of a relatively dense band of gas with a "cool" temperature of about 30 million degrees moving through lower density hot gas of about 80 million degrees. The enormous cold front formed about 5 billion years ago and has been traveling at speeds of about 300,000 miles per hour ever since.

The cold front has not only survived for over a third of the age of the Universe, but it has also remained surprisingly sharp and split into two different pieces.

Astronomers expected that such an old cold front would have been blurred out or eroded over time because it has traveled for billions of years through a harsh environment of sound waves and turbulence caused by outbursts from the huge black hole at the center of Perseus. Instead, the sharpness of the Perseus cold front suggests that the structure has been preserved by magnetic fields that are wrapped around it.

Perseus is the same cluster where astronomers use Chandra to discover sound waves with a note of B-flat 57 octaves below middle-C plus a giant wave about twice the width of the Milky Way galaxy. Astronomers will continue to use Chandra and other telescopes to study this fascinating galaxy cluster.

At a first glance, our galaxy appears to be made of stars separated by vast and empty space. However, we now know that this space is filled with things that are more difficult to see – gas, photons and the elusive dark matter. We do not know what kind of particle dark matter is made of. In most theories it is heavier than the proton, present in space as a few particles per liter. However, there is another possibility – the axion, a particle originally imagined here at SLAC to explain a mysterious property of the neutron. If they exist, axions would be light and ghostly, streaming almost invisibly through the galaxy, and a single liter of space would contain a billion billion of them. This lecture describes the properties of the axion and explain how physicists are trying to observe this particle. The discovery of axions would not only revolutionize fundamental physics but would also open up a new, rapid and encrypted communication technology.

Hendrik Vogel is a theoretical physicist working at the interface of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. He received his PhD in 2016 from the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. In the same year, he joined SLAC’s theory group as a postdoctoral scholar. Hendrik studies the possibilities for detecting light, weakly interacting particles – both known particles like the neutrinos and hypothetical particles such as the axion – and studies the influence of these particles on stars, supernovas and the early universe.

Worried about black holes? Consider this: Every time you accelerate - you generate an event horizon behind you. The more you accelerate away from it the closer it gets. Don’t worry, it can never catch up to you, but the Unruh radiation it generates sure can.

Around the same time that Stephen Hawking was demonstrating the existence of the black hole radiation that would bear his name, three other researchers, Stephen Fulling, Paul Davis, and William Unruh, were looking at an effect that now seems eerily similar. They were independently studying how the nature of quantum fields appears to change depending on whether or not an observer is accelerating. They found that simple act of acceleration cuts off your causal access to a region of the universe. It creates a type of event horizon. As we saw in our episode on horizon radiation, the presence of horizons distorts the quantum vacuum in a way that can create particles.

In this talk I present new results exploring how questions related to developing a sustainable human civilization can be cast in terms of astrobiology. We begin by presenting a classification scheme for planets based on the degree of chemical disequilibrium generated by the coupled planetary systems. In this context we discuss the role of biospheric feedbacks in the presence of a global energy-harvesting species. We explore how Earth System Science frames the thermodynamics of successful species and their interaction with biospheres including those species that develop energy-intensive civilizations. We then focus on the most import factor for sustainability in an astrobiological context: the mean lifetime L of an ensemble of species with energy-intensive technology. We cast the problem into the language of dynamical system theory and discuss how astrobiological results usefully inform the creation of dynamical equations, their constraints and initial conditions. We present solutions to an initial set of equations showing different trajectories of development of the couple civilization-planetary system. Finally we use Kepler data to set an empirical limit on the probability that we are the only time in cosmic history that an energy intensive technological species has evolved.

Massive Planet Found with Three Suns has Triple Sunsets and Sunrises

Luke Skywalker's home planet, Tatooine, in the Star Wars saga, was a strange world with two suns in the sky, but astronomers have now found a planet in an even more exotic system, where an observer would either experience constant daylight or enjoy triple sunrises and sunsets each day, depending on the seasons, which last longer than human lifetimes.

Located about 320 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur), HD 131399Ab is about 16 million years old, making it also one of the youngest exoplanets discovered to date, and one of very few directly imaged planets.

For about half of the planet’s orbit, which lasts 550 Earth-years, three stars are visible in the sky, the fainter two always much closer together, and changing in apparent separation from the brightest star throughout the year.

For much of the planet’s year the stars appear close together, giving it a familiar night-side and day-side with a unique triple-sunset and sunrise each day. As the planet orbits and the stars grow farther apart each day, they reach a point where the setting of one coincides with the rising of the other.

"HD 131399Ab is one of the few exoplanets that have been directly imaged, and it's the first one in such an interesting dynamical configuration," said Daniel Apai, from the University of Arizona, USA.

UFO researchers have long steered clear of religion for good reasons. The last thing they want is to be thought of as cultists who worship UFOs, as many debunkers have claimed. Joe Lewels is the author of The God Hypothesis: Extraterrestrial Life and Its Implications for Science and Religion, and Rulers of the Earth: Secrets of the Sons of God, both of which document his many years of research into the UFO and alien abduction phenomena. He holds a Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication from the University of Missouri and is a certified hypnotherapist.

He was chairman of the departments of journalism and mass communication at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1972-1982. He served as assistant state director for West Texas and Southern New Mexico for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) from 1993-2000 and was a regular contributor to the MUFON Journal. He edited the Freedom of Information Digest at the University of Missouri and was a writer and editor of the U.S. Army Aviation Digest at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Additionally, he was awarded the bronze star and the air medal with oak leaf clusters for his service as an Army reconnaissance pilot in the Republic of South Vietnam in 1967-1968.

On April 12, 1961, a human went to space for the first time! Yuri Gagarin was the first Soviet cosmonaut and the first person to orbit the Earth. This was the Soviet Union's next big move in the "space race" after it launched the first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957. His mission was called Vostok 1, and it involved both a Vostok rocket and Vostok space capsule. He lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and reached an altitude of about 200 miles. He orbited the Earth one time before his reentry module separated and fell to Earth. Gagarin ejected himself from the spacecraft and safely parachuted down to Earth. Both he and his spacecraft touched down some 1,700 miles west of the planned landing site.
