The visual recall or visual construct with the eyes going left or right works. But its hard to tell in some people and you have to know whether they are left or right handed. Also, some people, like me, or maybe its just me, I don't know, access all the areas before they answer (weird).
There's also audio recall and audio construct on the sides and talking to yourself which is down and one other checking on your feelings area.

It's funny one of my friends will always look towards my daughter when thinking and (my daughter would kinda wigged out in a curious way)when she is done she then looks to me as I am asking her the Q.
My daughter would always ask her, "why do you always stare at me when you think?" and my friend would always say the same thing.. "Because you help me think better"

I took a crash NLP course once, it was one of the best things I ever did because I learned so much about communication. They told me the eye movement bit works for almost everyone except the Basque people who's eyes move totally differently. No idea why that is. But I too have noticed that people will stare or look at something else.

Until well into adulthood, during any conversation I automatically looked straight into the other person's eyes when I spoke. However, then I became a graduate student and had to teach classes with many students. An old professor of my own talked to me about his own method, going from one pair of eyes to another, pausing less than a second between.
I practiced this diligently and found it very useful, not only in class but in crowds when an inadvertent stare from someone you don't know can may anyone uncomfortable. Obviously useful on subways and crowded city buses as well. Years later, I find that anytime I am remembering something and trying to describe it accurately, my eyes switch into classroom mode, focusing on one place, then switching sequentially to another and another, even if there aren't multiple people there to hear it anymore.
I'll bet other people have equally individual reasons for their gaze patterns. This method of "lie detection" seems designed as a catchall so that anyone can be indicted for lying when the FBI so chooses.

I have found that the older I get the worse I am at lying lol! When I was younger I could look people straight in the eye and lie, now I find it hard to even lie via the phone lol lol! I guess its my guilty conscience or dare I say I'm getting purer with age....yay! Lol
