View Full Version : Humor and spirituality: Let go and let God

Oops, my karma ran over your dogma.
How do you make God laugh? Tell him your plans.
Q: How much "ego" do you need?
A: Just enough so that you don't step in front of a bus.
Dear Lord, protect me from your followers!
Life is long but time is short. We take ourselves way too seriously far too often. Sometimes, the injection of a little humor into a situation can result in a lessening of tension not only for others but for ourselves as well.
The quieting reflex (http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20082465,00.html) is an exercise that consists simply of alleviating your stress by relaxing, breathing deeply, smiling and saying a little mantra that can shift your mood from one of anger and annoyance to one of calmness and peace in as little as 6 seconds. That can be the time it takes you to stop yourself from saying something you might regret or stopping a stressful situation from becoming worse than it has to be.
The phrase, "Let go and let God" is not necessarily connected to one religion or one spiritual practice, it can be applied to any concept of a greater good outside of or inside of one's Self, something larger that one can invoke in order to allow one's self to release the energy of tension that is built up during the processes of fear expression and its symptoms, anger, depression, regret and worry. These processes often become ingrained into our daily behavior to such an extent that we are not even aware that we seem stressed or tense, while, to others, it is as plain as the grim expression on our faces or the lack of emoticons in the words we write.
Let go of the stress in the moment, caused by that situation, people or person that upset you. Breath deep and smile. Consciously attempt to manifest the exact opposite emotional state to that which you are currently experiencing. In life's situations or as you are reading this, allow your face to relax, your body. Smile. Don't be critical. Laugh, if you can.
Make the choice NOT to be ruled by your emotions. Recognize that it is possible, that it truly is a choice.
In life, as you go about your days and nights, choose to internalize the habit of quieting yourself in moments of stress before responding. Choose not to take offense. Choose to apologize or end the fight. Choose to find some kind of compromise or choose to walk away altogether. Wait till later or don't respond at all, the world won't end if we take the higher road.
All of this said in recognition of the reality that measured and controlled aggression can indeed sometimes be the correct response to a situation. Just not all the time.
Time is long but life is too short to fight ALL THE TIME. You'll find your lifespan much shorter than it should be and the quality of it much lower than it should be unless you make the conscious decision NOT to take yourself so seriously. :thumb:

LOL GA you're definitely right about that, it is so easy to misconstrue texting, in emails or in internet forums because of the limitations of the medium!

Some jokes:
Old people at weddings always poke me and say “You’re next.” So, I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.
Q: What do you say to an angry witch?
A: Ribbit
Q: How do you tell a New Age witch from a NeoPagan Witch?
A: You throw them both in the water. The NeoPagan Witch will float, whereas the New Age Witch will sink under the weight of all their overpriced crystals....
Q. How many Iyengar yogis does it take to replace a light bulb?
A. Only one !
BUT, they will need:
a sticky mat
a backless chair
two blocks
five blankets
a bolster
six ropes
two belts
six assorted benches
a bandage
a slant board
two quarter rounds
three weights
one wooden horse
a certificate
Q: How many yogis does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Into what?
"I think it would be a good idea." -- Mahatma Gandhi when asked what he thought about Western civilization)
Three Yogis are doing meditative in a remote cave. One day a sound is heard from outside the cave. After about six months, one of the yogis says, "Did you hear that goat?" Once again, there was silence. About a year later, one of the other Yogis says, "That wasn't a goat; it was a mule." Again, there was silence. About two years later the third yogi says, "If you two don't stop arguing, I'm leaving."

Sun must be "near by" as well since it doesn't wander far from Mercury.
4 planet stellium without the Sun is not very common is it?

Nope. My Sun in previous sign Libra.

PS joke. Three philosophers are on a plane to a conference. They are Plato, Aristotle and DesCartes. The hostess comes and asks Plato what he would like to drink, coffee or tea. Plato says tea please without sugar. Aristotle is asked the same. He replies coffee with two sugars and milk. She looks at DesCartes and asks the same. He says I think not and suddenly disappeared.

That's what I meant (or else it would be a 5 planet stellium). You sound like someone who is quite knowedgable about astro and so I was making the comment that it is fairly rare to have 4 planets in one sign *without* the Sun.

A Catholic Priest, Baptist Minister and Rabbi were discussing what percentage of collections they personally kept for themselves. The Baptist Minister stated: "I draw up a large cross on the floor and throw the money in the air. Whatever lands in the cross goes to the ministry and anything that lands outside of it goes to me."
The Rabbi stated: "I draw up a Star of David and whatever lands inside of it goes to the temple, whatever lands outside of it goes to me."
The Catholic Priest stated: "I throw all the money in the air. Whatever God wants, he catches. The money that lands on the floor goes to me."

Great Advice Rahkyt,
Ok now, let me try this...
Relax take a couple of deep breaths Jackovesk, calm yourself and exhale...:horn:
After consulting God on New Years Eve, I asked him "What's the best way to communicate the Truth to people this year..?"
He pondered for a second and replied with this...
Jacko-Son, "Tell-Em all How it Really Is, No Sugar Coating - Tell-Em the Truth as You Know It..! The Good, The Bad & Ugly of it (ALL)..!" "You may upset some, but you will Wake Up many..!"
He parted the night's sky, with a glowing clear bright light and left me with these words...
"There is No Spiritual Mystery Jacko-Son, (Spirituality = Truth & Truth = Spirituality)".
"Make it your No. 1 Priority this Year to Listen to and Act On your Inner Voice".
Happy New Year to (ALL) Avalonians and our 1000,s of Guests, may this be the Year of Truth for Humanity, lets tackle it Head-On together as One guided by the all encompassing Universal Consciousness that is Alive & Well within each and everyone of us..!

Excellent post as always Rahkyt, totally agree with you and entertaining replies.
Indeed they say the way to good health is to laugh and sweat everyday.
But unfortunately I now, as much as I loathe to have to put on my villains costume and interrupt the laughter in the interests of the pursuit of truth have to act as devils advocate and present the other side of the argument. For the truth is a many headed beast.
Booooooooooooo, ssssssssssssssssssssssss,
Laughter and humour can often have a cruel edge to it, people will wrap nastyness up in a veneer of humour. It can be used to stop conversation. I have seen posts where people were earnestly discussing an important issue loose momentum because someone made a wisecrack. Most bullying whether at school or in the workplace involve an element of ridicule and humour.
I think there is conditioning within society that we don’t get to intense and serious. Don’t worry that we are turning you into slaves just relax have a drink and watch the ball game.
Certain issues that are happening within society are very intense, paedophilia, corporate fraud, spiritual malaise, we have to face them. It is not going to be a barrel of laughs but we try to find solutions because we care.
So as much as yes lets lighten things up now and again, I think we also have to let some people get a bit intense now and then as well. The kettle must boil to make the tea as they say in China ( actually I just made that up!)
In closing I am going to use an example of how humour was used against someone so that issues could be ridiculed and not discussed.
David Icke on wogan 1991 that killer line they’re not laughing with you they are laughing at you
And just cause your being earnest does not mean that you are not joyful

Sometimes i don't think people take me too seriously but that's o.k. too. Maybe I've not completely grown up yet.
The other day a friend sent me images from some Japanese students took of a UFO. My comment was, "I wonder if they served sushi."

A guy was climbing a tree when suddenly he slipped, then grabbed at a branch and was hanging there. After an hour or so had passed he felt himself getting exhausted and looked up to the heavens and cried out: "God, help me, please, help me."
All of a sudden the clouds parted and a voice boomed out from on high. "Let Go!" said the voice. The guy paused and looked up at heaven once more, then said: "Is there anyone else up there?"

do we all have have grandiose ideas of being wise....I know I do...not one of my best attributes and one which I try and discourage ...but I keep on coming back to the conclusion Im perfect...and then once I reach this happy state I start to go down hill again....ego is an amazing thing as soon as you think your sorted ...it chops your head off.....life is so funny I tend not to take it seriously that much..knowing full well it wasn t my idea anyway...and someone else is blame...lol

The truest part of you is perfectly wise, but it has no inflated ego to get itself all excited. It is good to detach from ideas like that. Either you're really wise and there's nothing to worry about, or you're not and there's nothing you can do about it. Don't be anything, just be. It's quite nice :-)

Thank you so much for this thread, we all sometimes forget that God loves laughter. It is good to be light hearted and filled with joy, especially in trying times. It really does help to laugh at ourselves and see the humour in human behavior. We can be pretty funny beings when we want to. Even when we don't want to. We all have a playful nature, we should learn to connect with that more often and stop taking ourselves so seriously. There is joy in every moment, if you just allow your self to see and feel it.

Excellent post, Rahkyt. Reminds me of something I wrote a couple years ago.
Overheard: If God didn't have a sense of humor, he wouldn't have put a runny nose right above our mouth.

I love the one, "Dear Lord, protect me from your followers!"My favorite band of all time, The Gang of Four, has a song lyric I simply love. It's "save me from the people who would save me from myself, they got muscles for brains".
One of Dr. David Hawkins' proteges exclaimed once that he had studied for decades. Buddha, Jesus, The Dao, everything, looking for answers. Then one day a bolt of lightning hit him (my guess is it was his association with Dr. Hawkins) and he realized it was all for naught. His deduction? Turn it over to God. All that study distilled to 5 words, so full of meaning only 1 in 1,000,000 could possibly understand.

Many years ago someone said to me, "I find I get along a whole lot faster when I just let it happen, instead of trying to make it happen".
This seems to work for me too, and somehow I think it is closely related to what you are saying here. Thanks M6*

Sometimes, Kids say the funniest things ...
DID NOAH FISH?
A Sunday school teacher asked, "Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark ?"
"No," replied Johnny. "How could he, with just two worms.
GOOD SAMARITAN
A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan.
She asked the class, "If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and
Bleeding, what would you do?"
A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, "I think I'd throw up."
SAY A PRAYER
Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away.
"Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer." said his mother.
"I don't need to," the boy replied.
"Of course, you do "his mother insisted. "We always say a prayer before eating at our house."
"That's at our house." Johnny explained. "But this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook.
