good general idea (home that can be grown) It's bouncing in my mind too, but that's expected.
Execution as proposed - not so good. Structural elements are limited, and to fill "gaps" you need lot's of non-organic materials. Plus heating, plumbing etc. It's feasible for a garden gazebo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazebo) not a full blown house. Construction time is also unacceptable from commercial standpoint. Not to mention politically-correct carbon BS.
The idea is promising itself, as you can make closed-circuit habitat - human waste is plant's fertilizer. water and sun are naturally collected - most of what we call human needs can be covered.
Tricky part is, you need to engineer such a home from molecular level - blueprint->DNA-> watch it grow. Slow growth of trees is tied to amount of nutrients in the soil, but you can make a hi-energy material deposit and calculate for that, you should be able to grow within weeks not years. And not only homes, but any other vehicle, machine, tool you need. And you can adjust it - no more problem with obsolete things, just reprogram it and voila :)
We're not at that level of capabilities, but I see it coming soon. But not from establishment :P

Hi Avalonians and thanks Mike 1441, for this eco-home-thread. I would love to live in such a home, if possible in a village of such homes! Even making such a home would be great, I think, with help or course. There's quite some designs and styles nowadays, to build a sustainable home. Michael Reynolds made Earthships in New Orleans, after hurricane Kathrina swept by, he is an architect who decided, in the seventees, to build sustainable housing with recycling material, like glass bottles, cartires, use of energy that comes from the sun, the wind and the earth itself. Oxygen from the plants that grow in side, also edible groceries. Here is a website showing these homes, they are very attractive and of course adobe is used to smooth the surfaces. Lots of mosaic too. Also a lot of wood and other natural material. All kind of luxury is possible, computers, tv-set, it's not at all a middle-aged dwelling of mud and grass alone.
