Knights of the White Camelia

Ku Klux Klan:1865-1877(1924),it began as a lark on December
24,1865,in a law office in Pulaski,Tenessee,when six veterans
of the Confederate States Army,James R. Crow,Richard R.Reed,
Calvin E. Jones, John C. Lester, Frank O. McCord, and John B.
Kennedy, decided to create a "club of some kind" to "break this
monotony and cheer up our mothers an the girls."They came up
with the name Ku Klux Klan because it combined the Greek word
kukllos,or "circle," with "clan," commemorating their Scotch Irish
descent. Also, Davis explains: "the weirdness of the alliteration
appealed to the mysterious with them."

They then made a raid upon Mrs. Martin's linen closet and robed
themselves with boyish glee in her stiff linen sheets and pillow cases,
as masquerading was a popular form of entertainment in those days.
wishing to make an impression they borrowed some horses from near
by stable and disguised them with sheets.
They then mounted and rode through the darkness, calling at the
homes of their mothers an sweethearts, without speaking a word.
They rode slowly through the streets of Pulaski waving to the people
and making grotesque gestures,which created merriment to the un-
superstitious,and to the superstitious,great fear.

Quickly this took a more serious turn . The white sheeted night riders
began to do more than "play tricks" on the superstitious -they
systematically terrorized freed blacks,carpetbaggers(Northern
Republicans), and scalawags(their Southern collaborators):their
expressed goal was the restoration of a white supremacist regime in
the former Confederacy.
The KKK would soon amalgamate with less-storied groups from
other regions,such as the White Brotherhood,the White League,
Pale Faces, Constitutional Union Guards, the Black Cavalry, the
White Rose, the '76 Association, and the Men of Justice.
At their first national convention,held in Nashville,Tennessee,in 1867
,the Civil War hero Nathan Bedford Forrest(1821-1877) was named
the Klan's first Grand Wizard. Forrest presided over the entire Invisible
Empire(the south);each state was a Realm led by a Grand Dragon.
Grand Titans presided over Dominions(collections of counties)
individual counties,or Provinces, were ruled by Grand Giants.
The Smallest organizational unit was a Den, which was commanded
by a Grand Cyclops. Staff officers were Genii,Hydras,Furies,Goblins,
Night Hawks,Magi,Monks,and Turks.Regualr members were Ghouls.
The Louisiana-based Knights of the White Camelia,founded in 1867
by Colonel Alcibiades DeBlanc(1808-1883),shared the Klan's goals,
but boasted a membership that was largely drawn from the professional
and landowning classes.Its members were called Brothers and Knights:
Its officers were known as Commanders.
The guerilla resistance to Reconstruction was so effective that Congress
passed the Force Act of 1870 and the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871,which
suspended habeas corpus and imposed martial law. Purportedly appalled
by the growing violence and lawlessness,Forrest distanced himself from
the KKK,calling for its dissolution as early as 1869;by the middle 1870's
its goals largely accomplished,the Klan and the White Camelia faded away.
