How do we know our Purpose in life?

Hello all!

Firstly happy 2012 Avalonians! I don't know if this question has been asked before, if yes sorry I missed the thread! I'm reading and reading and listening as carefully as I can to find out what is going on around me and within me...
I was told that confusion was in the path of all this new information, I'm exhausted with all I hear and learn and wonder if it ever become clearer?
Some know why the're here on planet earth... I have no idea how to find out what my purpose is. I feel as if I'm stuck in a maze.
If anyone can help solve this puzzled mind of mine please feel free, and share !!

I used to wrestle with this idea almost daily in my early twenties to the point it would cause me endless suffering, seeking the perfect spiritual path or the perfect career.

I thought id one day "find my purpose" or "know my purpose". I never did though. I still wonder everynow and then but i let go of the needing to know. How many people do you know that actually know what their purpose are.

Sure there are people living a life of purpose or with purpose but did they find it or create it. What im trying to say is do people have some kind of epithany, one day of darkness followed by revelation of ones purpose? I believe this is rare. I believe that a life is an ongoing creation, evolving and twisting and turning.

Victor Frankl in his book Man's search for meaning found that the ones who survived and sometimes thrived in the Holocaust prision camps were the ones who found or rather chose to find meaning in each moment. A moment of gratitude or the smallest act of compassion were literally lifesavers. His main point was that life was a conscious choice; one gave meaning to the moment rather than the external events dictating the individual. This is freedom.

What i think i am trying to get at is that the search for a purpose can actually get in the way of finding purpose if you get me. You can find purpose in any situation.

Another great book more related to this issue is called What should i do do with my life by Po Bronson. Its not a generic average self help book and definitely does not offer any answers, more so solace in understanding that this is a fundamental question that many people ask. The author interviewed 100s of people who had struggled to find the right career. He becomes close friends with many of the people and tells their individual stories. He finds that many people spend a long time and make many mistakes and compromises before they are finally settled. Very few people had a clear epiphany that told them what to do. More common were vague unclear ideas and intuitions that were often impeded with self doubts, financial doubts and family objections. Its a great read and helped my young twenty self realise that there are no straight lines in nature and its perfectly okay to change course in ones life.

Lastly i think in the absence of knowing ones purpose, its a case of continually re-aligning our interests and activities towards ones that bring us satisfaction or joy. Im sure this is the only sure fire way of living a meaingful way.

Explore how it would feel to
let go of the need to figure it all out,

to let go of the need to know, to have some answer
that permanently satisfies the discursive mind,

to let go of the concept of purpose,
of "why",

to let go of the exhaustive search for
the one looking out through your own eyes.

Instead, just love for no reason . . . everything!

If you follow the logic of New Age Religion, spirit beings (guides) have worked with your spirit to decide what should be your next challenge in this life. And then, you feel that you’re part of this life in your early youth. Then, you live your life as your purpose.

If this reasoning is valid, you should be able to search by means of regression what it was that you, with your spirit guides, have prepared for your awakening in this life.

And the author Anton Park would add that we, in the spirit world, are part of a celestial family (not our immediate family) that have a purpose also. And each member of the family progress in a life time to a new level of consciousness, and reach the purpose of that celestial body. And when all the members do reach the level they should attain, the celestial family migrate to another light level. If this is true also, then, it would sound interesting. I'm not sure if it helps in your search somehow...?

I appreciate very much your question and your interrogation. I'm exactly in the same situation. I’m trying to find out why I’m here and what I should be doing. I’m getting the following answers, read this and read that or do this and do that but with no proof or validation. There are many that offer solutions but it doesn’t give me my answer.
I’m under the felling then I should prove and confirm it to myself and only then I will know.

I might be off track, but to follow the well intentioned comments from a book or a guru seems to be the same paths of the many past centuries.

I’m just hoping then we will all find our answers.

I guess the point is that you cannot seek the path from anything external. The books i recommended ironically all state the fact that finding ones purpose is an individual pursuit. Yes i too was in the same boat and still am to some extent. Most of us here i would assume would identify as being seekers. But its my feeling that it can be a trap to stay in the seeking mode. Real like is here and now.

Nothing external can ever tell you what to do. Books, literature, philospophy , art can only ever be in resonance with what is inside.

Of course any words i write here will only merely sound like hollow empty constructs.

Every human on this planet has to struggle with this question at some point.

I feel it safe to say that everyone here has either asked this potent question or is in process of asking it...or both. Perhaps it may be useful to reframe your question, exploring what your core intentions are, the deepest desires of your heart, what is essential to you. To what do you most aspire? Much good 'advice' thus far from Avalonians. I like what pie'n'eal said..."it is that simple", it is also that complex. I would also second aranuks suggestion about utilizing the tool of astrology if, and only if, you feel so inclined. Recognizing that astrology is one tool among many, there is a branch of astrology that uses the moon's nodes to explore karmic aspects of our being...what we have brought into this current incarnation and the direction towards which we are moving (the path of our soul).

There are an abundance of 'tools' to aid us and some will definitely resonate more than others as you continue to ask (and ask and ask again) and refine your question...or...let go of it altogether and take a break from the asking as has been mentioned. There are, in the end, no 'solutions', you are the puzzle master and a mysterious process unfolding in a dynamic time in evolution...and are co-creating at this very moment, the answers to your heartfelt question. I fully understand your exhaustion, confusion, feeling as if you are in a maze...you are in most excellent company here. Whenever possible, spend some time in and amongst the kingdoms of nature...and listen. Feel, deeply feel, what it would be like to know your true self and your purpose/mission. THE VERY EXISTENCE IS A PURPOSE: THE MOVEMENT, HOWEVER ABSURD IT MAY SEEM, THE PURPOSE THAT WE HAVE TOGETHER IS THE CONSTANT MOVEMENT, YOU SHOULD NEVER STOP, YOU NEED OUR VERY NATURE, OUR DREAMS DRIVE US IN THE MOMENTS WHEN WE GET STUCK. SOCIETY OFTEN PUNISH OR CRITICIZE THOSE WHO ARE HAPPY TO MEET WITH THEIR SKILLS, AS CAPITALIST OR COMMUNIST SOCIETY DOES NOT UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT THE EFFORT WHICH THE HUMAN NATURE IS SUBJECT, THE IDEA WAS ALWAYS THAT WE HAD TO WORK WITH SWEAT OF THE BROW TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING ... ALL THESE SHORT-TERM NEGATIVE ASPECTS ARE POSITIVE LONG-TERM ... IS WHAT WE CALL: PREPARATION. IT'S A HOTBED OF NEW AGE IDEALS THAT WERE SEIZED, BUT NOT BEING IN THE COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS, DID NOT .

OUR MAIN TOOL TODAY UNLIKE YESTERDAY, WE KNOW THAT THERE IS A MISSION THAT WE HAVE AGREED TO COMPLY . WHICH DID NOT KNOW BEFORE, BUT HOWEVER, WERE MET BY THE UNCONSCIOUS AND SUBCONSCIOUS. NO MATTER WHAT OUR MISSION, THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO WATCH FOR THE SIGNS THAT LEAD US TO FULFILLMENT .
