Hello everyone, my name is Brock, and i am 19 years young.
I'm on this forum quite often, usually just reading and taking in knowledge, i really love everyones attitude here on PA, so i figured it would be a good place to ask for some advice.
I have moved up to this local ski mountain where i have been working and snowboarding almost everyday. About 2 and a half weeks ago i hit a jump in the park and overshot it trying to spin. I twisted my knee and heard a pop. I've been to a doctor at a clinic, and she told me i tore my meniscus (cartilage in the knee). I really don't want surgery, i feel like my injury IS slowly improving. I'm trying to meditate on it, stretch it out everyday, and try little energy healing tricks.
I'm just wondering weather anyone knows anything about this, I've checked a lot of online sites, but avalon usually gives good alternative views to things. If someone could give me a link to a good energy healing site or something that would be of good help that would be amazing.. It's depressing living here and not being able to shred the slopes. (Hopes are still high, and I am still extremely positive :) )
Thank you, Peace to everyone.

I personally do a lot of healing in my dreams but that's just me, it may work for you who knows.
Anything natural and spiritual helps IMHO.
Good luck in your healing process on all levels.

Hi Peace4all,
I can totally relate to what you are talking about. I also did some knee damage on the slopes. I did a 50% tear of my ACL, and damaged the meniscuses on each side of the knee. When you damage these ligaments there is no quick fix. I did see all of the people I could see also. MD, Surgeons, Energy Healers, Naturopathic Drs. The MDs and Surgeons of course recommended surgery, with a 50/50 prognosis. (Which after checking out the surgical procedures saw that they were not what I considered a good option.) The energy healer, ( a Reiki Practitioner), seemed to help the swelling go down and get me walking again in about 2 weeks when I was told it would be 4-6 weeks. I tried various natural methods to reduce the swelling like warm mud soaks, comfrey/colts foot poultices. Which definitely felt good at the time. You see a meniscus injury is comparable to over stretching a rubber band. Once you do this the rubber band will never have the same recoil it once did. Over time your ligaments can heal back to somewhat normal so that you will have the use back, but you will most likely always have a weakness there that you must protect.
Unfortunately the only thing that made the difference really was time and staying off the leg. Definitely not doing anymore to aggravate the injury. Even make sure that you are careful walking on slippery walkways. I know how you must feel. I also injured my knee in January with all of that good ski season left.
Now I will also add the advice you may not want to hear. Know that you are meant to learn from this. There is a reason that you as a soul chose this lesson. I know that for myself when this happened I was in a ski club that traveled the world skiing. There was always competition and ego involved with this group. After the injury I still participated in the ski trips but was now sidelined to only observe. I started to see another side of the whole group dynamics of skiing and the ski community. Very money and ego driven is what I learned. You are on top of beautiful mountains and never really look around at the beauty that surrounds you. Your thoughts are on looking down the hill and are you going to beat your competition to the bottom, do you have better skis than the next guy, what about the outfit? I learned to look out at the Mountain views and contemplate how I missed all the beauty.
I no longer hang with that group. Find that what are thought were friendships were not what I was looking for in friends. I now prefer cross country skiing. It is better on the knees and one does get to enjoy nature much more. I also have learned that I love snow shoeing too.
Good luck to you Peace4all, I do send you healing thoughts with this post and wish you back to normal soon.

I am a young guy too (27) I am a construction worker. When the economy took a hit years ago I was out of work for over 2 yrs. During that time I came across this healing technique my mom would praise. The practitioner was retiring soon and wanted to pass down his knowledge. I took all 3 levels of training and enjoy it. I have been practicing this hands on healing technique called bowen therapy. It deals with sports injuries and helps with joints and muscle related injuries. If there is not a bowen therapist near you look into acupressure. You can google bowen therapy to a find more info. I think this will really help your recovery. Peace and love

Hey Brock,
Well, being in such a cold place wont help.
Try using one of those thermal rubber bags, filled with comfortably hot water, about four times a day. It will improve blood circulation and accelerate healing.
Also, try to keep your knee warm all the time and donīt force it, right?
Cheers,
Raf.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, I'm not quite sure as to what a thermal rubber bag is, perhaps like a hot patch or something of the sort?
It has been 2.5 weeks now since the injury and i went from barely being able to walk to almost pain free. ( Hurts to straighten leg and to bend down ass to the ground )
I would be extremely interested in the bowen therapy, except for the fact i live in a smaller town and there is none in the area...
And trust me amysenthia, I LOVE the nature and mountains, it's one of the reasons why i got started. (At the age of 7)
I love it too much to stay off my knee completely!
Thanks once again for all the feedback guys, I truly appreciate it.

I've had a long and very athletic life. I have had some difficulty with my knees. And also I had a specific accident where I too, heard my knee 'pop', a sound that thundered through my skeletal system and resulted in instant nausea. I'll tell you how I got better, and what I'd do again.
I used something called 'the flame' from the following web site: http://www.biogenesisglobal.com/
This little miracle crystal wand has been known to completely heal compound fractures (where the bone breaks completely and punctures the skin) within 2 hours of incident! And you don't have to believe in it.
Another thing to try, if the above seems to woo-woo for you, is 660 red LED light therapy. The most inexpensive ones I've located are direct from the manufacturer: www.theledman.com These are retailed on a number of sites for double the price there. Scientific studies have shown that shining these lights on an injured area 5minutes daily causes an injury to heal 4x faster. It does this because it stimulates cells to produce ATP at a very rapid rate.
And, finally, I'd like to second what Amysenthia said in the post above. It is likely that this happened in order to slow you down. I don't know why that is for you, but something similar happened to me years ago. So, enjoy your rest and spend some time learning to love life without the skiing for now. Who knows what might show up for you, now that your life is different for a while.

The only reason i can think for this accident happening is for my spiritual growth, now i am meditating a lot more because there is nothing better to do whilst sitting in my dorm style house/room.
Do you think these remedies work for cartilage damage as well?

Hi
sorry to read about your injury.
When I was aged about 20, I badly smashed my left knee at a high level Judo grading.
It was swelled up like a rugby ball next day.
What eventually helped was following: 'De-La Rue's Foot', combined with infra red heat treatment(first) This was at a professional phsio session(s)
The 'DLRF'- was a set of weights, attached to the leg/knee. After the application of the IR heat, sit on a table, then slowly lift the knee with the weights attached.
It took about a year to heal.
I appreciate you don't want to hear this, but perhaps 'the universe is telling you a change is needed right now'?
Hope that helps, best of luck anyway.
I'll put you in my 'pyramid of healing light', that makes 46 now!

Pretty sure i did the same thing when i was 8 or 9 in a motorcycle accident... didn't hear if it 'poped' or not cause i was KO'd.. but i couldn't straighten my leg for about 3 months, i mean at all... my foot was up at my ass for 3 months... i still get a jolt if i move my knee cap in a certain fashion.

or once it feels "normal" again wait 3 more months.. knees are high use joints, lots of time to heal..

A few studies show that the results are the same for patients who:
A. Do nothing
B. Have surgery
Those having nothing done had a tiny incision on the knee. They thought they had been operated on, but had not. So, is it the placebo effect or something else?
I had terrible knee pain for about two years and finally went to the surgeon. He recommended surgery. I scheduled it, but got the flu and cancelled. Never rescheduled. Now, 10 years later my knee is fine, no pain at all. The pain diminished about 3 months after being told I needed surgery.
Good luck. Whatever, at 19 you'll heal amazingly quickly. Intend for it happen and sit quietly for 15 minutes a day and visualze the healing having already taken place. Say prayers of graditude for the healing. See, smell, hear, feel in your imagination the healing and how you feel emotionally because of the healing. It WILL work. Your thoughts become your reality.
Salute.

I think you mentioned something that was really important for you. At this particular moment in time the best therapy for all of us is to have the opportunity (forced is perfect) to be still and introspect. That will speed your recovery as much as any therapy, but the best self-help for physical stuff is simply open palms on the area that needs repair. That's your heart chakra communicating instructions to the repair cells. They know what to do, sometimes it helps for us to tell them to get on with it. But it's appropriate to say it 'from the heart' right? Everyone is a Reiki Master whether they paid some guy to show them the secret symbols or not.
You don't have to try to clear your mind of thoughts, just watch them and dissociate from them a little. Your thoughts aren't you. They're just your thoughts and the useless ones get boring compared to the helpful ones if you learn to not be too attached to them. With a little practice which is being provided for you, you can take that stillness back with you to the slopes. You probably find it there already, but finding it within your own thoughts is a rush. It won't be that long.
You're right, that accident was no accident. Knowing that speeds recovery as well. When you don't need to learn introspect anymore because you learned it, you don't need a bad knee either, right?
Cheers. Travel light.

I am too grateful for all of this advice.
I'm going to wait on my knee and give it love and energy, it seems to be working pretty good so far, getting better everyday:)
Now may this thread float to the bottom of the abyss, Thank you all!
May we all find peace in these upcoming times.

Where you riding pal ?
My season got ended half way through the season last year due to injury (shoulder). It forced me to head home, get surgery, take time off and now I am back.. riding with a lot more caution mind you. Injuries come with the territory when it comes to snowboarding; one of the two incidents I endured last season took place in the park so I can totally relate to what your going through.
Time off may be your only option if it's serious.
I'm up in Whistler, literally about to take off now and head up the gondola!
Have a good one.

I'm trying to meditate on it, stretch it out everyday, and try little energy healing tricks.
On the "energy healing" aspect:
You are allowed to ask for help with the healing, if you want a "force multiplier".
If you do, that empowers those that would like to help to actually do it. If you asked people who have an interest in healing on Avalon and wish to serve in that manner, then they can. Pretty hard to do that before the permission valve is opened :)
There has been a really good thread recently thats worth reviewing for that aspect of the problem. Different injury, similar "energy" healing processes http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?38041-Is-there-a-protocol-or-method-that-fixes-damaged-nerve-cells-and-tissues
The only reason i can think for this accident happening is for my spiritual growth, now i am meditating a lot more because there is nothing better to do whilst sitting in my dorm style house/room.
Yes - it looks to me you got the main insight/issue/lesson out the way - all you need to do now is get the healing done.
My sense is this will be rapid :)

I'm looking at my injury in a positive way, i feel like i ventured off my spiritual path of meditation a little too much...
This injury has definitely gave me a lot of motive to pursue that once again.

Let me mention comfrey root. Folk name is knitbone. It has allantoin in it which is a connective tissue cell proliferant. Whether the issue is bone, cartilage, tendon or ligament, comfrey root is very helpful, or so it says in books. <(Disclaimer) If you can find it in a tincture, it make it easier to use, right out of the bottle. I will decline on giving any usage tips because of the silly laws temporarily in effect these days. I do believe a little deductive reasoning would yield the protocol though.

I feel like I am being misunderstood...My life is not empty by any means, like I said before I love my life.
I will be up front and say that this activity will NOT cease... Perhaps the freestyle aspect of it for the meantime while my muscles rebuild.
It had been my plan to move up here for the last 8 months, everything had to go right for me to be able to live my dream. Which thankfully it did:)
If things go according to planned, i will be riding for the duration of my life.
This is my last response to this thread, i thank all who contributed.

Just to be the other side of Modwiz's coin... I've been involved in snow sports since I was 8 years old (two sticks till 15, snowboard ever since) with no injuries, I don't think the physical injuries are the greatest threat... Since I've backed off on my adrenaline addiction I've noticed significant cognitive growth.
THAT is the real danger of adranaline (IMO) addiction.
Feel free to look around the web on this topic... here's a few starters:

Modwiz,
"That is, it may be thrilling, (adrenaline junkie?) but you have now experiences the very really and probable downside."
I guess you did not intend a pun there?!...lol
I admiit,...now, in the wisdom of hindsight, that Judo although a great sport, has its probs, in that 'the body is just not designed to crash to the ground-with force,.. especially with someone on top of you'!
I have had my fair share of injuries, shoulder-X 2, knee, back(trapesius detatch from spine), etc
The physios were not, on the whole, very sympathetic to judo, or rugby injuries.
On the other side, a great sport for 'all round total fittness',..+ Some amazing people I met, + a great character builder.
So although, like you, I have no inclination to hurtle myself downhill, at the mercy of gravity, I cannot actually lecture anyone on the dangers of certain sports?!...lol
P.s. Thanks for that 'Comfrey' tip, I shall be trying it myself for prolonged(not Judo) arm & shoulder probs.

Heh. Most young athletic people *are* adrenaline junkies in their youth. I sure was. Fanatic downhill skier from age four onwards (back when the Heavenly Valley Ski Area at South Lake Tahoe consisted of the dead end of Ski Run Blvd. up the hill with one rope tow, snrt).
I have a torn meniscus, and I was told (by the surgeon that did my shoulder surgeries), because I tore the meniscus in back, surgery would do no good, BUT it could heal by itself. Apparently if your meniscus is torn in front, it won't heal by itself, BUT surgery will fix it.
I found that when my knee hurts, it is best to stay off of it.
Good luck. I hope it heals. It is rough losing the ability to hit the slopes. But, you do get past it. It wasn't the knee that stopped me. I got a measles shot at 39 (Yes, I was an idiot and didn't know any better) and received instant, severe arthritis.
I still ski in my imagination. :) I remember.

COMfrey is great, we used to feed it even to our cattle, we cut it and after it wilted they would eat it. we made tea, another of the bitter family.
A great healer. I don't grow any here in Baja, it's so hot, but it sure grew great up in Western Washington state. we had like over an acre of it.

I'm sorry that I did not make myself clear. My knee injury was the SAME one you describe. It is nicknamed a 'blind side' injury because the knee is inherently weak when stressed from a blow or other injury which forces the joint 'inward' from the 'outside' of the body.
My information was to tell you how I healed my injury... which was identical to yours. Including the internally felt 'LOUD POP', which echoed like thunder through out my skeletal system.
My knees are fine now and I can do most things. They do ache if I go down a very steep trail for a mile or more.

Hello everyone, my last post in this thread was jan 6th.
A lot has happened since then with me and my knee.
After being told i had meniscus damage, i went to a couple different doctors. The first one told me MCL sprain and it will heal, and the second one told me I had just stretched a ligament and i should just take a month off and there was no meniscus damage. After a month I rode out the last two months and by the end i had progressed my riding a lot.
Flash forward 2 months in June I was at the tramp center for the second weekend in a row having fun (knee felt fine by now) and all i did was land on the tramp and my right knee bent sideways to the ground. It hurt quite a lot with instant swelling and i heard a cracking noise when it happened.
I ended up barely walking to my car and driving home because i didn't want to wait in Emergency for 4 hours to get looked at.
Waking up in lots of pain i got to the hospital to get looked at and the guy thinks its a possible ACL tear and sends me to get looked at by a surgeon a couple weeks later.
The Surgeon I saw was supposed to be good but when I looked his name up he had made some pretty bad mistakes and I also know someone personally who got the surgery from him and he had to get it again due to his error. I didn't like his attitude towards me and when i asked if i could get an mri he said no that wastes to much time and money. He is 100% certain i completely tore my ACL. After a few more visits i decided to start finding a new surgeon.
1 month passed and i got in to see the new surgeon. I didn't really like him either but he seemed better and there was a cancellation on new years eve. He tested my knee and said its torn but he's not sure how much. This guy kinda creeped me out for some reason but hey he's done 100's of these right?
Okay now today my mind got blown, I had an appointment at the Naturopathic clinic for a free 15 min consultation. I had been researching prolotherapy for acl tears and it seemed like there was a chance this could help heal it if everything goes right. For anyone who doesn't know what prolotherapy is you should look it up! It helps promote healing to tendons and ligaments, and not just knees. Anyways i get there and the doctor ask whats the deal, i tell him everything and he seems suprised. He doesn't understand how I can have an acl tear with no pain when i bend super low and no pain when he does all the tests. He tells me a i don't have an acl tear, it's just cartilage damage. I couldn't believe him and kept asking him like how could both surgeons be wrong and he told me its bullsh**. He's positive I don't need surgery and prolotherapy will get me back to aggressive snowboarding, in fact he thinks i should test snowboarding out right now just taking it easy on some easy runs....... he also thinks my other knee is more damaged with the mcl which i can believe seeing as sometimes when running it aches first.
Hope this wasn't way too long, what is everybody's thoughts? Should i seek yet another Dr's opinion? I'm getting the injections next week. Wishing for positive results, and putting my faith in this man.

Try this too, look up something with chondroitin glucosamine and msm in it...
Something for animals is the best value, like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Legacy-Joint-Support-Supplement-Barrel-SR-Horse-MSM-Chondroitin-Glucosamine-5-/360481879533
Keep resting the joint and take lots of that.. It's cheap & works amazingly on joints, I use it for my dogs & have taken it myself for knee issues
I don't go to doctors, so I can't really help you there

I too would be putting comfrey and yarrow poultices on it. .. at night. wrap it up. apply heat on top.
Both of my kids are boarders... passionate about it and work in a ski resort. They have comfrey growing all around their house. I think previous boarders must have planted it. If you plant yarrow you want white yarrow, not pink or purple or red.
a miniscus injury can heal. Keep off of it. Symphytum 200c is a good homeopathic choice. (homeopathic comfrey) Whole foods carries 30c which is ok but you need to take it about 4 or 5 times a day in acute conditions.
For every week it takes to heal add one extra week for further rest. Sometimes surgery is requried but it doesnt sound like you have such a case... In six months if you are still limping you might wan to think about it.
Doctors are so full of sh^t
my dog got a torn ACL. Surgery cost us 1500. 4 years later he tore the other acl. no money. no surgery. I put him on a strong antiinflamatory for about a week and he is quite well now.
I doubt ibuprofen will help but a prescription anti inflammatory might. Dont use it over 2 weeks though. If it doesnt help by then it wont and if the pain isnt resolved in two weeks best to find another way cause those drugs are not so hot for you... but reducing inflammation can speed healing. Hoping the comfrey and yarrow does it as it is non toxic.
