So Eternal Law looked to be on to a winner with its idea of a pair of angelic lawyers fluttering down from Heaven on a mission to provide celestial legal aid for sorry souls who had fallen from grace and wound up in court. With Samuel West and sidekick Ukweli Roach giving spritely performances as the winged legal team, the scene was set for an escapist slice of divine intervention.
But a show that should have taken flight felt leaden and earthbound. Like a white feather floating in the wind, the reason was hard to put your finger on. Though the angels’ first case – the grubby tale of a charmless bloke who’d taken pot-shots at his ex’s new husband on her wedding day – didn’t help the cause, it made precious little sense and exerted zero emotional pull.
The main problem was the way Eternal Law played fast and loose with notions of good and evil to the point where it was hard to know which side was up. I’m up for a spot of moral ambiguity but this was plain confusing.
Somewhere under the haphazard wings of Eternal Law there’s a parable about... well, something. Actually, I haven’t the foggiest what point it was trying to make. At least with the Good Samaritan you knew where you stood
For me Lawyers and Angels, Hmmm IMO don't mix (no offense meant to any lawyers out there) !!
We will see how it pans out.
Interesting times that the TV should show something so very wonderful. Lets hope they portray it in the correct way, with divinity and beauty.
