Former House speaker Newt Gingrich has pulled off an upset win in the keenly watched South Carolina Republican presidential primary.

Counting continues in South Carolina but the result is beyond doubt, showing Mr Gingrich has completed a stunning turnaround in the key primary, racing to a double digit lead.

To cheers of "USA, USA" and "A whole Newt world", Mr Gingrich thanked South Carolina for its southern hospitality as he accepted victory.

"[It is] very humbling and very sobering to have so many people who so deeply to want their country to get back on the right track," he told the crowd.

The American people feel that they have elites who have been trying for half a century to force us to quit being American and become some other system."

Mr Gingrich said the US government had lost touch with American people.

"So many people who are so concerned about jobs, about medical costs, about the everyday parts of life, who feel that the elites in Washington have no understanding and in fact do not represent them at all," he said.

"The American people feel that they have elites who have been trying for half a century to force us to quit being American and become some other system."

He also took aim at president Barack Obama, who he accused of being led by radical left-wingers.

"Just think how radical he would be in a second term," he said.

Former Massachusetts governor, national frontrunner Mitt Romney, rang Mr Gingrich to concede defeat before telling his disappointed supporters to get ready for a long fight.

A win for Mr Romney in South Carolina could have effectively ended the Republican nomination process. Instead the battle now moves to Florida.

Mr Gingrich has shone in the televised debates, and nearly two-thirds of those voting in the conservative state told exit polls the debates were important.

Shouts of "Newt, Newt" echoed in the former speaker's campaign headquarters when Fox television called the key primary for Mr Gingrich, with one supporter calling out, "I feel like I want to kiss everybody."

In a message on his Twitter account, Mr Gingrich said: "Thank you South Carolina. Help me deliver the knockout punch in Florida. Join our Moneybomb and donate now."

For the past 30 years the winner in South Carolina has gone onto become the Republican party's nominee.

The upset breathes life into the Gingrich campaign and has weakened Mr Romney.

Mr Romney has seen his early lead in South Carolina fall and his national lead over his Republican rivals has also slipped.

The outcome means three different winners in the first three contests of the 2012 Republican race to choose the party's standard-bearer to take on Mr Obama in the November elections.

The first vote in Iowa on January 3 was this week eventually ruled to have been won by former US senator Rick Santorum, although Mr Romney, who took the second vote in New Hampshire, was initially believed to have triumphed.

'He kicked butt'

Republicans have yet to coalesce around one single candidate. Mr Romney has the money and the on-the-ground organisation, but suspicions linger over his Mormon faith and whether he is conservative enough.

He has also sought to deflect attacks that he built his vast fortune while firing workers, saying he expected such jibes from Mr Obama, not fellow Republicans - traditionally the party of business.

Mr Santorum and Mr Gingrich have both now briefly surged to the front of the pack.

Mr Santorum and US congressman and libertarian Ron Paul will take third and fourth place.

Late on Saturday (local time) Mr Romney came out swinging, vowing he was prepared for the long-haul as he congratulated "speaker Gingrich and my fellow Republicans on a hard-fought campaign here in South Carolina."

"This is a hard fight because there is so much worth fighting for," he told supporters shouting "We need Mitt" in the state capital Columbia.

"This election is a battle for the soul of America. It's a choice between two very different destinies for America," Mr Romney added, attacking Mr Obama as having no idea how to get the struggling economy back on its feet.

"If president Obama thinks he can compare his record of job losses, with my record of job creation that's a battle we're going to win."

Mr Santorum praised Mr Gingrich for his "great victory" adding "he kicked butt."

"There's a momentum for Newt and he capitalized on it," he told CNN, reassuring supporters that he would not bow to pressure to quit to allow conservatives to coalesce around one candidate.

"We have conservative organisations, we just got together and started endorsing us this week. We think for the long-term, we're going to be in much stronger shape."

America. It's a sh!t show. I don't know which is worse, rigged elections or letting our morons actually vote. We lose either way. The real power hides in the shadows, but that is coming to an end. Just a little longer. They are out of money and their goons are finding out. Game over!

I believe TPTW brought him out to get a "name" to end up running against Obama. Seriously, look who the republicans had running before you threw Newt in the show. None of them were household names but ole'Newt is.

Yes indeed a crap show for sure. I don't vote and haven't voted for 20 years once I figured out it was/is nothing but a sham....

The leading question in the last debate was designed to give the newt a 'platform' to show off, and to keep him visible. That is All it was for... and then all the lame-stream outlets started 'reporting' he had a 'surge in support'... never mind that his last public appearance was canceled due to a lack of attendees. The Empires are crumbling...

And, the ending of empires is a messy thing. Even more so, when the entire world's paradigm is splintering and falling into dust. Unfortunately, I feel there is a great deal of upheaval yet to be realized as a Large portion of the populace have yet to fathom the scope of the change that is upon them. I see this in my friends and acquaintances - most do not wish to hear of anything that challenges their world-view. A few of the more 'generous ones' simply suggest that I be more 'discerning' in offering any enlightenment. All one can do is to offer support as best as you can. I feel the road's going to be rather 'bumpy'.

Polls: Gingrich Grows on GOP Voters.

November 11, 2011

Two polls out Friday show former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s campaign gaining traction. And both polls show there’s plenty of room for the race to change dramatically: 17% of respondents are undecided.

http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/OB-QN580_Gingri_D_20111111122157.jpg

A McClatchy-Marist poll of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents finds that Mitt Romney’s poll numbers remain steady – he generally garners the support of about a quarter of the Republican and Republican-leaning voters. That puts him in the lead, with Mr. Gingrich in second and former front-runner Herman Cain close behind.

By the numbers: Mr. Romney, 23%; Mr. Gingrich, 19%; Mr. Cain, 17%;Texas Rep. Ron Paul 10%; Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 8%, and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, 5%. Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum got 1% apiece.

“Romney is still where he’s been. It’s fair to say this is a battle for the anybody-but-Romney candidate,” said Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion at Marist College. “Gingrich has now begun his 15 days of fame. Whether he is able to maintain that, as others have fallen, is the question. He may be the only one standing when this is all said and done.”

The poll shows that many voters aren’t strongly attached to their choice. Mr. Gingrich has the most-committed supporters at 43%. For both Messrs. Romney and Cain, the level drops to about 30%.

“They’re no more firmly committed to the overall field than they were in September,” Mr. Miringoff said. “We should have seen people feeling a greater sense of conviction. It’s not moving.”

The poll, conducted Thursday after the GOP presidential debate at Oakland University in Michigan, had a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points.

A CBS News poll shows Mr. Romney’s support slipping to 15%, putting him even with Mr. Gingrich and behind Mr. Cain, at 18%.The poll of likely Republican primary voters shows 61% dismissed the sexual harassment allegations against Mr. Cain, while 30% say they would be less likely to back him.

But Mr. Cain faces a gender gap: nearly four in 10 women said the allegations make them less likely to vote for him, and his support among women fell to 15% from 28% a month ago.

The poll was conducted Nov. 6-10, and the error margin for likely Republican primary voters is five percentage points.

What's interesting here, he mentions a "Fight for americans soul" and a choice "between two different destinies". That choice between two different destinies still end up in the same spot either way.

Yes, I understand that. But, taking all into consideration. It's what he's intimating that is aligning with what others have been saying. It's going to be a "bumpy" year, but we'll come out on the other end and it's going to get better. I would say "trust me, I know this." but I could barely explain half of it.
