View Full Version : What is your favorite sound?

As I headed to bed last night, exhausted from another busy day, I found myself listening to the pouring rain outside for what seemed like hours. Of all mother natures wonderful sounds, none seems to capture my spirit more than rain. Billions of tiny drops of water all joining together to make a magical harmony, a healing force that I could never grow tired of. Meditation seems easier when I hear rain outside. The busy thoughts in my head seem to be absorbed and washed away (sorry for the pun). My best sleep is always during a rain storm. I wish it would rain every night!
So what is your favorite sound? There are so many to choose from, but perhaps the sound of silence is what works for you? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers!

Rain, thunder and a running stream, they all help me to be calm and relaxed.
Nice thread starter BTW..

I like the sound the TARDIS makes. :)
On a more natural note, I like thunder and/or the soft crunch of snow underfoot when all is quiet.

I would have to say rhythmic beating vellum or old drums.
Building in speed.
And being in a forest alone, its like natures orchestra :)

I would have to say a nice thunderstorm, or the sound of waves. I also like waking up to birds singing outside my window :)

A blackbird's song.
I also love The Beatles 'Blackbird' - we were once strolling by Lake Como in Italy late at night...and a blackbird began to sing in a tree over our heads...'Blackbird singing in the dead of night'...spine tingling ;)

V-12, 6 liter or thereabouts, ears popping, vision blurring and narrowing to a point about 1/2 a mile up the road, about 200 mph...engine screaming like an angry banshee being torn in half.....
on the other end of the scale...
some nice ambient music...

I HAVE combined the two.
That song.... at over 160 mph. (well. I HAD to do it, at least once....)
Then..there is this. A guy who owned the biggest record store in town. he had about 20k albums at home, at the time. We actually got into a scuffle in his store..over the last LP copy of this. If you've never heard this before..you are in for a real treat.:

Being I've only ever heard this sound twice in my life, the sound of my new born little girls entering this world for the first time was amazing! After a few long nights listening to the crying, well let's just say I'd prefer the rain.

Young women laughing unaffectedly together. The sound has a tone, a pitch, a resonance that would wash away the ills of the world.

My mother's voice and laughter.
I also love most natural sounds, especially the sound of wind, of thunder, of sea waves, of snow falling upon snow.
(I do like the sound of rain myself, but I actually prefer to feel it on my skin.)
And church bells in the distance, when a lovely day out is ending.
And being in a forest alone, its like natures orchestra
Absolutely! :)
And music, of course, but that's a whole different realm.
But without my mother's voice all the voices of nature, and even music, would bespeak nothing but absence.

That would have been a nightingale.
And yes, it is lovely. :)
P.S. You would probably appreciate the description of Gustav Mahler's funeral.
(It's not morbid. Not at all. :)

Absolute silence...
and then, the sound of a conch or a horn blown
from a distance, over valleys filled with mist,
on a very early spring morning, before the birds wake.

Absolute silence...
and then, the sound of a conch or a horn blown
from a distance, over valleys filled with mist,
on a very early spring morning, before the birds wake.
When, and where, I live in my tent for half the year, each meal is announced by the blowing of conch shells. 3 times a day they sound to call people to the dining hall and nourishment. I am almost a half mile away in my tent from the dining hall and they are beautiful to hear. I, like you Meeradas, enjoy silence but the natural sounds of the deep Summer, with the woods filled with a wall of night sounds from myriad insects is my favorite. Especialy late at night after the katydids have stopped and it is just the blanket sounds of whirring and ecstatic screaming of the insects. In the woods the crickets are not as much in play but walking past wide lawns on my way to my tent, just a little way into the forest, the crickets serenade me. Winds blowing and gusting in passionate, but not threatening or damaging, ways is another delight of mine.
I guess the sound of Nature is my favorite sound. Babbling brooks are another treat.

To be truthful, my favorite sounds are like Mod's or Meeradas' favorites.
Ethereally speaking, my favorites are the sound you hear when slipping out of the body and the sound that 'the light' has. The light has a sound that is, well...pretty difficult to describe. I wish folks could hear it, but, eventually, all will.

Here is a 45 minute recording I made after a storm had passed on Fire Island, NY. It is a barrier Island and runs for over 30 miles facing South into the Atlantic Ocean. No voices or planes are heard and no music. Pure Ocean, stirred not shaken. On a good stereo set the room will rumble with the waves and feel like being at a beach. It is my recording, no copyright, feel free to right click it and save it.
