View Full Version : Fred's Music Through a Different Door

Ok, Here comes a few things I thought folk would like.

Music of a different sort, and some using uncommon instruments, or variations on guitars.

First of all, some Chapman Stick. Invented by Emmett Chapman, it is a guitar, which can be tuned conventionally (E) or in some other key. Made in both electric, and acoustic versions, they are usually two instruments in one. Top half is usually a base guitar, the rest a conventional one.

I say the rest because they come in 8, 10, and 12 "single string" versions. The instrument has the strings set very close to the fingerboard, and are normally not strummed. Instead it is played "hammer down" fashion, or merely striking the keys and holding notes.

What this allows is guitar playing with a piano technique. If you have ever seen Stanley Jordan (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?262-Tango-s-Musical-thread...-POST-YOUR-MUSIC-HERE.....&p=1202&viewfull=1#post1202) play, then you'll know what I mean. The results are beautiful.

Ok, enuff...

HOLD THE LIGHT
© 1968 Sommersongs / BMI

And I've seen where I'd like to be
It's a place where your mind is free
If you've seen it, better keep it, don't let go
Hold the Light, it's so bright
I can't describe it but it's right
And easy to find it, Hold the Light.

And I know what I want to do
I can try to enlighten you
If you've seen it, better keep it, don't let go
Hold the Light, it's inside
And will be there day or night
We can be somewhere, Hold the Light.

It's so hard to hold on, but you can if you try
Don't be mislead by what you've been brought up to do
It's for the better in you, and will be there day or night
We can be somewhere, Hold the Light.

And I've touched what I want to reach
And it's things I would like to teach
If you've seen it, better keep it, don't let go

Hold the Light, it's inside, and will be there day or night
We can be somewhere, Hold the Light
And will be there, Hold the Light
We can be somewhere, Hold the Light
And will be there day or night
We can be somewhere, Hold the Light.

Thanks for chiming in guys.

Next: David Arkenstone (http://www.davidarkenstone.com/)
He paints pictures for the mind, using sound like almost no one else.

Most of what you hear, is also him playing. He plays piano/keyboards, Guitar, Violin, flutes of all kind, and others I can't think of, right now.

He does albums that will generally be on a single theme, or story. I recommend either "Wake Of The Wind" or "Secret On The Moor" for first CD's. His first, "Valley In The Clouds".

The music he writes, just turn off the lights, put on his music, and just let the pictures flow.

The "magic" of jigs, reels, and much of what gets tossed into the "Celtic Music" bin, has to do with how it's structured. Much of it is "3-beat" music, but played to 4:4 time. That means there is always "one beat left over". That is what gives it that "endless, no stopping point" feel to it.

No, it doesn't help at all to know that, the stuff is infectious anyway.
