The singular sight lasted for nearly one hour.
Dozens of vertical luminous beams appeared in the night sky of Xiamen about 11:30pm last Friday, reports Southeast Express.

The singular sight, which lasted for nearly one hour, was first discovered by Mr. Wang's friend, a resident in Huangcuo, near Xiamen's famous Huandao Road.

According to Mr. Wang, his friend first saw several luminous beams in the sky and then told them to go outside and take a look. They were stunned by the sight before their eyes.

"At first, there were only five of them, hanging very low in the sky, but after a short while, the number increased to about 50, and they were higher and higher, just like a stave hanging in the sky," Mr. Wang said.

The Xiamen meteorological observatory said no such astronomical phenomenon was monitored by the observatory. "But it was not a meteor shower," a staff member said.

Fantastic!
I'd love to see something like that.
What's the bet that if I do - I won't have my camera on me.
(Note to self: Do not leave house without camera.)

Absolutely - that makes it a whole lot less interesting, though :-)

I am by no means a debunker, but I have seen similar phenomena around here in Ontario, Canada. Important to note though is that I have only seen this occur in winter on very cold nights where there are tiny ice crystals in the air to refract the light [and in the OP photo, the people sitting don't seem to be in a very cold environment at all]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_pillar

Do a Google image search for Light Pillars and you will find many beautiful images.

I remember seeing a video taken by troops in Iraq through night vision equipment which looked exactly like these lights, these pillars of light have been recorded over centuries by many people and are referenced many times in the bible.

All I can say is that this doesn't occur uniquely in China. I've seen reports from these light pillars in Europe as well.
