Breaking News: Monday, February 27, 2012 at 04:07pm
ASSISTANT Treasurer Mark Arbib has resigned as a minister and senator, sending shockwaves through Canberra.
The NSW senator cited personal reasons for today's decision, which followed this morning's leadership ballot.
Senator Arbib, who is also the Small Business and Sport Minister, said he also hoped his decision helped the party heal.
He said his job had taken a toll on his family and his children, and he had told Prime Minister Julia Gillard of his decision this morning.
"While serving the Australian people as a senator and as a minister is the highest honour in politics, the personal toll on family is great," he said.
"Now sometimes I think that most Australians think a politician spends half their life in Canberra, then following that they go on holidays for the remainder of that time.
"Nothing could be further from the truth.
"It's a seven-day-a-week job and the time away from you kids, the time away from you spouse, is incredibly hard."
The faction leader said he had made some tough decisions in that role, but he had always been loyal to the Labor party.
Senator Arbib said he wanted to give the party a chance to heal and recover from some of the conflict of the past.
He said he had been involved in factional issues for many years, which had been discussed in the last few days.
"We need to close the door on that period and we need to start afresh," he said.
But he was not a "faceless man", he said.
He called on his colleagues to put the bitterness aside, renew and unite behind Ms Gillard following her comprehensive endorsement today.
He said he had met and worked with some brilliant people.
"My only regret is that I can't continue that work," he said.
He said there had been no pressure from anyone to make the decision.
"Some people need to make decisions that are in the party's interests and that's what I'm doing," he said.
Senator Arbib was the convenor of the national right when Mr Rudd was deposed as prime minister.
He said he hoped his decision allowed the party to "get over" the events of the past 18 months.
"We have come to the end of a difficult chapter of the party’s history," he said.
"And I want to start a new chapter.
"I want to help the party start a new chapter."

Mark Arbib, Right-wing power broker and “faceless man”, is to quit as Senator and Minister for Sport and Assistant Treasurer.
A broken man?
UPDATE
He was on Gillard’s side.
UPDATE
Arbib’s press conference:
- calls for unity behind Gillard. Says he thinks she can and will win the election.
- says he’s had to make some very tough decisions over the past three years. Most were correct, and he stands by them. (He’s referring to knifing Rudd.)
- says he resigned (ie not sacked). Hopes to heal turmoil (presumably because he’s been divisive, and blamed for Labor’s poor 2007 result). Also gives Gillard a chance for a reshuffle.
- says also “personal reasons” - his family. And hit 40 last year, the age he decided 10 years ago he’d reconsider his career. I do think family is a genuine reason for him, given his upbringing. Said his daughter cried when he was made Assistant Treasurer and he told her he’d have to be away even more.
I actually like Arbib. Is it OK to say so?
UPDATE
- His resignation is a “gesture to unite and to heal”. Wants to mend some conflict in the party.
UPDATE
But then there is this report, from November, 2011: (http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/link-by-link-the-powerbrokers-of-the-right-emerge-20111121-1nr08.html#ixzz1nYZxiDVT)
The sale of land for $1, mysterious donors, property developers bankrolling a company of an MP’s son, union officials getting mining deals - welcome to the NSW Right where connections are crucial.
It was in July 2003 that Eric Roozendaal and Mark Arbib - both prodigious fundraisers through their then positions as head and deputy head of the NSW Labor party - completed their respective real estate purchases.
Neither has been able to explain what coincidence led to them purchasing boutique beachside apartments not only in the same suburb but also in the very same block.
Mr Arbib’s unit in ‘’Sea Breeze’’, only 100 metres from the surf at Maroubra, was purchased in the name of his wife, Kelli Field, who works in investor relations at Macquarie Bank, having previously been a policy adviser to Eddie Obeid and Michael Costa’s chief of staff. Mr Roozendaal’s was bought by a family company.
Of the 20 townhouses, built by developers Brian and Garry Boyd, the purchase price of only two apartments in the block was not disclosed to land titles department. They were Mr Arbib’s and Mr Roozendaal’s.
Residing in the same block, in a unit owned by the Boyds right next door to Mr Arbib’s, was Moses Obeid, son of the controversial Labor figure Eddie Obeid.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised in Labor circles as to whether Mr Arbib, the federal Sports Minister, was receiving an undisclosed benefit by not paying rent when staying in Canberra during parliamentary sitting days.
During 2007 to 2009, Mr Arbib stayed in Alexandra Williamson’s two-bedroom apartment in Forrest. Ms Williamson, a staffer in the office of the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, is the daughter of Mr Arbib’s and Mr Roozendaal’s close friend, embattled Health Services Union boss Michael Williamson, who is the subject of a police investigation.
Just before Labor lost the last election Mr Roozendaal appointed Mr Williamson to a government board.
Mr Arbib, through a spokesman, said he was adamant that he paid rent directly to Ms Williamson. Ms Williamson’s only comment, sent by email, was: ‘’Mark Arbib and I lived together where he paid a portion of the rent.’’
I do not say this is a factor in Arbib’s resignation at all. I suspect not, but it would certainly be just one more stress.
