It's taken me a very long time to realize this, after having read it said in different contexts.

Power of Positive thinking, The Secret, chants, mantras, the music in your head.

O.K. so you get a thought from somewhere, your culture, karma, subconscious NOW how to we discern or act upon it?

When I go to a horror movie, what images, stimuli does that manifest for you? You see suffering on T.V., hear of a loss of a friend.

How many moments do we dwell on these images and patterns of our mind? And what are the outcomes? Can I choose which ones are valid and ignore the others without consequence? Or do all thoughts have some impact on our psyche and physical well-being.

Is there a cure, a protection process, a simple prayer that can cleanse and negate those thoughts that don't resonate with us?

I guess...Be careful what you wish for.

Our minds are endlessly repeating habitual thought forms that result from familial, cultural and karmic conditioning. SO WHAT DO YOU DO? Learn to observe your mind, a process that can span decades. When we identify with our thoughts we become them. Our minds become so powerful that most human beings are slaves to their own conditioned thought patterns, unaware that the arising thoughts are but one small aspect of who we are.

Hello Vaughn B,

You are right, and this is what meditation is all about, observing the appearances in the mind, and not being controlled by them.

That ability to be discerning, weeding out the chaf, the truths from the untruths seems to be my greatest challenge. As I walk the path, a seeker, I find how little I understand, I continue to ask questions of myself and those around me, a friend, sage, or even my dog.

In the midst of life's ups and downs my attitude can be affected by my ego, I don't deny it being, nor am I out to destroy my ego.
Yet I want some equanimity, balance.

My little mantra's to myself are:
Have compassion,
Be Open and vulnerable
Have passion
Be relaxed and content
Be able to laugh to myself and the world around me
See the wonder and magic in everything
And most of all have a sense of humility; especially when looking out into a starlit night.
