Was John Carpenter trying to get the message out years ago, or was it simply a sci-fi scrpt he had co-written to make into a movie?

Has anyone else ever seen this old movie? I caught it late night on AMC movie channel. It was a sci-fi movie about humans being brainwashed and asleep while the aliens and the power elite run the world. I had never heard of this movie but found it interesting that it was out in 1988. Talk about "Art imitating life." It is amazing what shows up on late night TV.

Brief synopsis:
A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth with the power elite. Many persons in this city are in fact aliens (from the Andromeda) and most of them are important members of our society. They keep humans in ignorance and they rule our world as they like making the rich richer.

Those old PTB.

Hey Mandala,

Recently I watched it in HD, altough it's a slow and quite dull made movie indeed it's a must see.
I wonder how many mainstream people got the message back then.

I'd like to have a pair of glasses like his to see who's real and who's not:)

Most definitely! The movie is worth watching for that fight scene alone. It's awesome.

You can watch the whole movie on youtube its broken down in parts but the whole thing is in there,it is a great movie indeed sadly most people who watched arent even aware of the message built into the movie, thats the zombie/sheep state of mankind sadly :(

Great movie. I first saw it late one night when I was eleven years old. It took a decade for me to consciously understand its significance. The fact that Rowdy Roddy Piper plays the main character is just icing on the cake!

Being a sci-fi fan, this was one of my favorite movies that remained significant to me even more so after I woke up. I would tell people about it and stress the fact that we are ASLEEP to many of the happenings around us. The movie made it so clear that we are indeed under a spell to "Marry and Reproduce", Obey, Sleep; and referring to money "This is Your God"; all overt, covert, subliminal, occult. Even today it is very pervasive but unrecognized by most. Now that we are awake, we don't need the glasses; we see clearly. That John Carpenter, he's definitely plugged in.

I saw this movie years ago and didn't get it but it stuck in my memory. When I started becoming aware of the true nature of this reality I remember it and thought 'Oh yeah, he knew something alright".

Here's my favorite scene:

Wich is quite odd because it really can't be any more obvious then this.

Though Carpenter has always been pointing to such things in his work if you look at it as a whole.

That is true. Real message is that people in the film didn't want to believe in different (true) reality. Even it was told. Isn't this like now?
