This is not an easy interview to watch because of the visible pain she feels. I lived among many wonderful Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Like any society with a strong religious foundation, there are always fanatics, and while I respect the right for individuals to choose their own paths, the issues Wafa talks about is not about free will choice, but how the weakest members of those societies do not have an easy choice, but are forced to live a particular way.
Girls are brutalized. Women are committing suicide, and this woman's viewpoints deserve to be heard.

I have known many good musilms, but as in all things, the good go quietly about the business of being good, while the twisted lust for and sieze power. Rather than ask for an end to all religions, wouldn't it be better to ask for an end to the twisting of the beauty of the human heart?

This is an excellent woman. I applaud her, Unified Serenity. She's speaking her conscience and that takes alot of courage.
IMO, it's not just Islam, but several other religions that do these things, too.
Can we honestly say that huMANity evolved out of stupid caveman thinking....? This should not exist in this day and age...
I'm thoroughly disgusted that any ADULT man would take a young female under 16 years to marriage. Under that is abuse. What kind of sexual knowledge would a 6 year old have pleasing an old bast**d's sick needs? They haven't even given up their toys yet..... No, serious. This is a matter of male self-esteem issues! What woman would want this kind of man anyway? I apologize to all the good and decent men who reject this kind of abnormal behavior....
From what I've learned, I know that the arousal comes from the abusive way they take their innocence AND essence. It takes a big man to do that, right? Pedophiles are the ones who created this in the first place to become religious nonsence. (IDK maybe it came from back in the old Spartans days in ancient history, who knows?) And then they claim God told them it was acceptable. We all know that God doesn't say such things....That it's more likely a demon speaking into someone's ears....
All I can say - is it too much to ask to leave the children ALONE?
QUIT TOUCHING THEM! :wizard: :wizard:

Music, you raise a point which I think is very important. I'm speaking to all, not just you music when I say these words regarding our world. Look around you Americans. Look around you in Western countries at how society is acting, how children are being sexualized. It seems all thoughts are centered on immediate gratification. Gone are the days of having to wait for things. I don't even have to go out shopping for a majority of things I want. I can just go online, pick it out and it's shipped to my house. It's rare to have close knit communities. It's so rare there are now stories online about somebody actually going throughout their neighborhood and spending time with neighbors and writing a book about their experience. Our minds are filled with noise from Television programming, radio shows, IPODS, Electronic devices, bluetooth in our ears, actors and actresses talking to us from boxes on grocery aisles as we shop, it's constant bombardment and I'll call it electronic harassment.
I was blessed to travel the world with my family while I was a teenager. I lived in Greece, Germany, Saudi Arabia and visited so many countries. It was my time in Arabia that in many ways affected me in some of the strongest of ways. Yes, women and men were definitely treated differently. I was shocked that women could not drive and other odd things that seemed to keep them under "control" and well, let's face it, who the heck chooses to wear black head to toe in 130 degree weather? Not the men, they wore white thobes and head dresses. All that aside, there was an order. I did not see miserable women when I was blessed with visiting homes of Muslim friends. They were kind, happy, and there was a sense of community and trust. Women were shown respect. My father was shown a great deal of respect as were my mother, sister and I because we did respect their culture. I wore the black "cape" and kept a veil around my neck as a scarf and my blonde hair while visible was not shown off. You never just stopped by to say hi to a Muslim friend. Oh no, if you did drop by you were treated as a very honored guest.
One day, I stopped by my Yemini friends home in the Saudia compound (the airline had it's own compound). I was invited in and spoke with my girlfriends for a few moments after saying hello to their father. He made some small gesture which I noticed and the mother disappeared. Twenty minutes later, she brought out a large brass tray with all kinds of special treats on it! I tried everything on it, and asked them many questions about being in the Kingdom which they were very happy to answer. I had known the girls for several years and forgot my early warning about showing a liking for anything a Muslim owned. I made the mistake of telling one of my friends how beautiful her glass bracelets were. Without hesitation she and her sister took them all off and tried to shove them onto my arm, but as I have rather wide hands they broke one after the other. I tried in vein to stop them. I was mortified, and they kept trying to honor me by getting one on my wrist. Only when they saw the tears in my eyes did they stop, for they knew it would not work. I never made that mistake again.
Muslims have a beautiful culture. There were no crimes in my compound in the years we lived there. I never once saw anyone steal anything from the Suk despite it being layed out and so easy to grab and run with handfuls of gold. Yes, the penalty if caught is to have your clean hand cut off, but still, it just did not happen. Swift justice has made them an honest people, at least in the Suk. Yes, there is a limited freedom as no one is allowed to share differing religious beliefs. We had to sneak a bible into the country and if we had services or a get together we used code words on the phones because they were tapped and anyone could be listening. We kept our meetings privately and did not proselytize, and quite frankly most Americans did not gather often for anything "Christian". My point though besides sharing part of my experience is that I believe man yearns for a spiritual system. We like our routines. I do not think it is the religion that is the problem, but the inevitable abuse of some who seek power and would abuse the faith of good and well meaning people to gain more power. We could stamp out all religion worldwide and eventually someone will find a way to create a new way with a new name. Instead of talking openly about God, they will just use some other name like we did to gather.
If we do not end the corruption within the various systems they will just continue to harm the innocent and weak. The strong will gather and their base instincts will justify by doctrines the abuse. Ms. Sultan is a brave woman, and I believe she is speaking for millions of women and children who desperately need help, but what are we to do? For me, I shall pray that hearts will be changed, and maybe someone a bit more powerful will be in the right position to bring about the needed changes.
