Huge savings as Federal Government cuts price on prescription drugs

March 31, 2012

Prices will drop on 1000 brands of 60 popular prescription medicines

• FULL LIST: FIND OUT HOW MUCH YOU WILL SAVE (http://resources1.news.com.au/files/2012/03/31/1226315/196331-adv-file-pbs-list.pdf)

THOUSANDS of families will pay less for prescription drugs, as the biggest cuts in the history of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme hit chemist shelves.

Prices will drop on 1000 brands of 60 popular prescription medicines by up to $14 a script.

Taxpayers who subsidise the cost of the medicines through the PBS will also save $1.9 billion over five years.

Drug companies hope those savings also will help the Federal Government list new drugs on the taxpayer-funded PBS, with a swag of new treatments for cancer, arthritis and kidney failure also to join the taxpayer-subsidised medicines scheme from April 1.

A comprehensive analysis of the savings for families prepared by the Health Department for the Sunday Mail reveals drugs to lower cholesterol, treat high blood pressure, osteoporosis, depression, heart failure and reflux will be reduced in price from today.

Because the price of the drugs now will fall below the current co-payment for prescription medicine of $35.40, patients will secure big savings and pharmacists can compete on price.

Pensioners and concession cardholders will continue to pay $5.80 per script.

"This is great news for millions of Australian patients who will see additional money in their pockets," Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said.

"The Gillard Government is making sure patients will have greater access to the medicines they need at reduced prices for conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, epilepsy, depression and pain relief."

The big savings are the product of new agreements struck by the Gillard Government and drug companies on price disclosure with the benefits finally flowing through to consumers.

In some cases the price of popular cholesterol-lowering drugs, one of the biggest selling drugs in the nation, will fall by $14 per script. The average cost saving to consumers per script is $3.

The main reason the price of drugs is falling is because of the rise of generic medicines which have the same active ingredients as brand-name alternatives.

Pharmacists welcomed the price cuts but cautioned that pensioners and concession cardholders would continue to pay the standard fee of $5.80 per script.

"Most prescription medicines are bought by patients with concession cards who will continue to pay $5.80 per script," Pharmacy Guild of Australia spokesman Greg Turnbull said.

"The average cost of the thousands of medicines on the PBS is about $48. So every time you pay $5.80 you are getting a massive saving. We hope consumers recognise that."

The co-payment of $35.40 cannot be discounted by chemists by law, but once the cost of a drug falls below that chemists can compete.

"These are big savings that go straight to consumers' hip pockets," Medicines Australia's Dr Brendan Shaw said.

"The price cuts agreed will also deliver the Government $1.9 billion in savings. That will provide the financial headroom for the Government to bring new medicines on to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme."

Oh yeah jackovest,I know only too well mate.

Thanks for the link too hey.

I'll be still paying $5.80,but now I feel better "recognising" that they are sacrificing $42.20 for Pensioners...gee that's so generous though I'd like to know where it's going to come from  ...if it wasn't for the DSM I wouldn't be on a bloody Pension!!

Oh and gotta keep that darn Cholestorol down,we can't have what's left leaking through the Chemfog turning into Vitamin D3 now can we?

Depression, man now they've nailed the "cure" for normal feelings in precise dosages on an individual basis with all the new modern testing GP's do,we can feel safer in Big Pharma's hands too.

Gotta keep them Opiates rollin too, there's a lot of people who really need them!

What's the street value jackovest?

Last I heard some woman was selling Oxy's for $20 a pill!

Bargain basement sales from Miss Treason,Brendan Shaw and I bet Mr. McGorry's loving this roll out.

Thanks heaps with all my heart....ya Fabian twit :mad2:

This is the company I worked for http://www.healthmattersinternational.com/
We sold prescription drugs to the US customers. Talking about incredibly expensive legal drugs, the US citizens are really screwed in every department. The legal drug dealers get the people hooked on drugs and then they are willing to pay anything for their addiction. It's sad, but true.

Every time I watch the tv commercials about how people can "qualify" for free prescriptions, I think that big pharma wants to give their poisons away to more people than just through doctors' prescribing them. How generous of them! IMO if it's free or outrageously expensive, poison is STILL poison. People are dying and aren't even aware that it was big pharma behind it.

All we can hope for right now is that someday, big pharma will be held accountable; and be made to pay retribution money to EVERY person and their heirs. Many people are aware of how big pharma rolls; and it's only a matter of time now because it's not just the banksters who being arrested. Big pharma should be very afraid.... They're next!

*look all the herbs being called dangerous and made illigeal and now this*

Can someone hit the reset button allready?

Pretty please!

-------

They even set it up so for little things you HAVE to see a doctor on a regular basis. Pay the $90 consultation fee just to get another script of "the pill".

Unfortunately... thats the only "drug" im on and not willing to stop. I'm one of those people that would have a mental breakdown and do silly things if i were to become pregnant...

herbal alternatives? I wish!

LOL it comes with Parenting TigaHawk ;)

My Partner was told by many specialists that she could never conceive and we were cool with that.

Funny thing is, they put her on the Pill to help with the "condition" and now we have a beautiful 2 year old Daughter named Maya.

Seems fate does not lack a sense of irony...to quote ;)

It's well worth it,rather than taking Pharma crap.

All in all from the various Channelings and new info coming to light....these mongrels will pay very very soon, and our DNA will be restored.(check Montagues latest Channelings via Veronica Keen)

As for alternatives.look into TCM,Ayurveda and such, the West has very little to offer in the BIG labs.

MetaGenics has some very potent products(no affiliation, just blown away!!)

These have been some of my tools coming off a long term ongoing accidental Benzo addiction, and I'm making ground, and man it has been a long and winding road thus far.

There are no text books or real help once they have you hooked, but there are many Age Old methods that can help on the way back....networking is very important.

Collect rare seeds and plants for their medicinal properties, learn about them and grow them!!

Big Pharma (ARE NOT) in the Business of keeping people Healthy or finding Cures..!

If they were...

They'd be (Out of Business)..!

This is what sparked my curiosity...

"The Gillard Government is making sure patients will have greater access to the medicines they need at reduced prices for conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, epilepsy, depression and pain relief.

Without knowing, the general public don't realise the Dangers of such Big Pharma medications...

Haha gripreaper,the irony....sugar-coated LMAO :)

EDIT: Oh yeah,it looks like Glizzard must have cut a nice drug deal with some dodgy Labs,as they are bringing in more of the cheap "Generics"...it was in the Newspaper today.

I know for a FACT from my research that these drugs are NOT repeat NOT the same.
The allowable % range of the Actives are, well from Arrow (http://www.arrowpharma.com/) is up to 20% as stated on the pack!!!

From the horses mouth,as I rang them a while ago requesting the info. because I need to be precise with dose cuts.

I rang Pfizer and asked them the same question, they said 0%,i.e. Exactly what it states on the pack.

Here's something, you can request the full specs on the drug you are prescribed to be sent to you,as is your right to inforamtion.Someone recently did this and instead of the ****ty leaflet "some" get,its TWENTY A4 PAGES!

Wrap ya head around that :loco:

I live in the city. Only a very small handfull bulk bill and you practicly need to book a week in advance :S

And to the kids thing - not like most peoples fear of kids. I once had a late "thing" and totaly freaked out, stopped eating. so depressed it wasnt funny, did something stupid with the assistance of alcohol and ended up with stitches. I realy think im one of those people that arnt mentaly fit or capable to have kids . It would be unfair on me and the child if it were to happen. I could do without sex entirely (but because im in a relationship, and im gunna marry this guy i swear, i understand its part of the relationship to do the deed so take every precaution possible)

Anyway back on topic... whats the famous saying??

Oh yes!

"There is no money in curing diseases and sickness. There is only money in TREATING THE SYMPTOMS" :(

Here is a snippet I was just watching from psychetruth, summarising some very disturbing aspects of the new DSM-V.

ue_eVkcwZ04

Guess even that has most if not all of us lined up for the Big Lolly Machine.

They won't pull this off unless they commit themselves to Medication as I'm sure the very writing of this could be classed as a Conspiracy or God Complex, which no doubt is in there....there are "no-boundaries" ;)

More dirt!

Note on this page, there are no links to the "Expert Advisors" ?
http://www.dsm5.org/MeetUs/Pages/DiagnosticAssessmentInstruments.aspx

Well I Goooogled one randomly and this is it:

Prudence Fisher teaches Normal and Pathological Aspects of Childhood (T6601). Dr. Fisher received her Bachelor’s degree (Psychology) from Johns Hopkins University and her M.S. and Ph.D (2001) from Columbia University School of Social Work.

Dr. Fisher is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatric Social Work in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Research Scientist at New York State Psychiatric Institute (Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry). Dr. Fisher’s main research focus is on the development and testing of assessment measures for children and adolescents. She is widely acknowledged in the field at large as someone who is knowledgeable about assessment issues and actively collaborates with investigators both within the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia and at other institutions. Dr. Fisher has been instrumental in the development of numerous versions of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC), the most widely used diagnostic interview for youth, and of many other widely used measures, including the Children’s Global Assessment Scale (CGAS), the Columbia Impairment Scale, and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), among others. In 2008 she was appointed as an Advisor to the DSM-V workgroups for Child Disorders and ADHD and Disruptive Disorders in Spring 2009 she was appointed an advisor to the DSM workgroup on Measures and the Impairment worksgroup.

Currently, Dr. Fisher is Principal Investigator on an NIMH funded grant to compile and analyze a database of diagnostic and symptom data on approximately 19,000 children and adolescents to address the validity of current and proposed diagnostic categories and criteria for child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. She also has a grant from the American Psychiatric Association to carry out field trails to examine proposed DSM-5 changes, which will begin fall 2010. Dr. Fisher recently completed an NIMH funded grant to develop an innovative computer administered interview designed to improve the detection of side effects from psychotropic medications in adolescents, the Columbia Health and Adverse Reactions to Medications Screen (CHARMS). She is also is faculty on the Child Psychiatry Research Training Grant.
In addition to her work on assessment issues, Dr. Fisher has also been involved in studies on adolescent suicide and its aftermath. Since 1989 has been member of the scientific advisory board at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for which she reviews grants. She also served as project director on two large studies concerning adolescent suicide – a psychological autopsy study and a family study – and is currently preparing papers on the bereavement adjustment of first-degree relatives of adolescent suicide victims (the topic of her dissertation).

Granted she is qualified...but not qualified enough for a link? :violin:
