Land Grab Bill Threatens America's Rainforest
Right now, Congress is considering the fate of many of the finest stands of coastal temperate rainforest in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest—considered to be the crown jewel of the U.S. National Forest system.
If passed, this legislation will hand over tens of thousands of acres to Sealaska Corporation for clearcutting and commercial development. Gone will be towering stands of trees as old as 500 years and as big as 10 feet in diameter—some of the richest prizes in this vast old-growth rainforest.
Gone, too, will be the home they provide for eagles, bears, wolves, salmon and countless other species. Also harmed will be the many southeast Alaskans who live off these lands and waters for their subsistence lifestyles and livelihoods, and the many others from across the country who rely upon and visit the Tongass for world-class recreation, hunting, tourism, and sport and commercial fishing.
Sealaska has already received over 290,000 acres of land from the Tongass in a previous Congressionally approved deal to settle native land claims that the corporation sought back in 1976. This current legislation (H.R. 1408 and S. 730) would change that deal and give Sealaska new and many of the best areas of the Tongass.
Allowing this single corporate stakeholder to gain control and ownership of the most valuable areas of the Tongass undermines the Forest Service’s plan to transition out of old-growth logging and into more sustainable economic development through ecosystem restoration, fishing, and tourism.
The proposed legislation also gives away numerous smaller parcels scattered throughout the Tongass, including popular anchorage areas, hunting and fishing hotspots, and many of the best sites that sit at the edge of wilderness areas, heads of bays, and mouths of salmon streams. Privatizing these sites for commercial development by Sealaska Corporation would restrict public access and jeopardize the number of tourism and outfitter businesses, sport and commercial fishermen, and local Alaskans and visitors who rely on the Tongass for their livelihoods and recreational enjoyment.
Don’t let this corporate earmark legislation irreversibly harm the national treasure that is the Tongass. Join with us and urge the Obama administration to steadfastly oppose the legislation as the bills work their way through Congress. Please act now to save this magnificent place by sending this letter to USDA Secretary Vilsack—who oversees the U.S. Forest Service—asking him to protect the Tongass National Forest and oppose the Sealaska Corporation legislation.

EPA: Save Our Bees and the Food We Eat! Ban Bayer's Chemicals Now!
Why This Is Important
United States bee populations are in a nationwide free fall -- and this could spell the end of fruits and vegetables grown on our soil.
Not only has the US experienced widespread honeybee deaths and disappearances, called "Colony Collapse Disorder" (CCD), we have also seen a dramatic decrease in the wild bee population. Massive and continuing declines in the bee population means our food supply and our economy is in jeopardy.
As a third generation back yard gardener who is passing the gift of growing food on to my own children, I have witnessed the decline in wild bees first hand. In order to draw more bees to our garden, my children and I have surrounded our vegetable beds with wildflowers, and we never use chemicals in our garden or lawn. My family and I are doing everything we can to help our local bees survive, but the Bayer Corporation is working against us, and the EPA has yet to stop them.
In the past several months, three separate studies have added substantial weight to the growing body of evidence showing that widespread use of nicotine-based insecticides called neonicotinoids is linked to Colony Collapse Disorder. One study found that colonies exposed to neonicotinoids produced 85 percent fewer queens, meaning the creation of 85 percent fewer hives. United States Department of Agriculture bee expert Jeffery Pettis rightly calls the findings “alarming.”
Bayer markets its neonicotinoids widely to growers of corn, soy, wheat, cotton, sorghum, peanuts, and other crops. Research by the Pesticide Action Network of North America showed that a minimum of 142 million acres were planted in neonic-treated seeds in the year 2010. 142 million acres is equivalent to the size of California and Oregon combined! And that number is likely to be even higher this year. On top of that, neonics are widely used in home garden and landscaping products.
EPA registration of Bayer's neonicotinoids was primarily based on a study funded by the Bayer Corporation itself, and that study has been discredited by the EPA's own scientists.
The EPA must act now to ban the sale of Bayer's neoniconitoid products. When the bees suffer, we all suffer. We must do everything possible to protect this essential pollinator. Our bees, and the plants that depend on them, can't wait.

Tell Obama: Keep Your Promise On Fracking
In his State of the Union speech, President Obama promised that drilling and fracking for natural gas would happen "without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk."
Oil and gas companies are trying to get Obama to go back on his word.
On April 17, the Environmental Protection Agency is set to finalize regulations that would reduce lung-burning smog and cancer-causing benzene from fracking and drilling. But the oil and gas industry is lobbying hard for loopholes that would dramatically weaken the rule—and they’re taking their fight straight to the White House.
We need to be there reminding the President of the promise he made to all of us—that fracking for natural gas would not come at the expense of people’s health.
In some areas of the country undergoing a gas drilling boom, the air is getting as smoggy as Los Angeles. And without strong rules, it will get even worse.
We’ve got less than two weeks to push for these strong rules. Will you contact the White House today and ask a friend to do the same?
This Documentary tells the horrors that are being experienced in the U.S as a result of Fracking for Natural gas

Protect The Ocean’s Food Supply From Industrial Fishing
Finally—almost five years after a public outcry—fishery managers are planning to do something about industrial trawlers that are devastating New England’s fisheries.
Now, it’s time to finish the job we started and demand strong rules to protect the marine food web. Will you speak up against indiscriminate industrial fishing?
The New England Fishery Management Council is accepting comments on rules that could bring greater accountability and oversight to a fishing fleet that includes herring trawlers up to 165 feet long—the largest vessels on the East Coast. Their football-field-size nets catch and kill millions of pounds of unintended catch every year, including depleted fish such as bluefin tuna, river herring, shad, and cod, as well as whales, dolphins, and seabirds. River herring are essential food for such animals as striped bass and osprey, and these ships are depleting the small fish to the point that they are being considered for protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Federal fishery managers are now accepting comments on a set of rules intended to deliver progress on regulating industrial fishing in New England. If they fail to act, river herring and other fish that anchor the marine food chain could crack under the strain of unchecked pressure from massive industrial fishing operations.
This is a great site, where you can also start your own petitions and submit articles ...

Chevron: Clean Up Your Toxic Mess in Ecuador
Why This Is Important
Over the course of twenty-six years of oil drilling in Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, U.S. oil giant Chevron deliberately dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest, leaving local people suffering a wave of cancers, miscarriages and birth defects. The tragedy in Ecuador is so profound, it has been compared to the Exxon Valdez spill and called the “Amazon’s Chernobyl.”
Despite of the tremendous suffering caused by this toxic pollution, Chevron has refused to clean up the catastrophe.
Sign this petition to Chevron CEO John Watson and tell him he needs to clean up his company's toxic legacy in Ecuador.

Speak Out Against Attacks on the Endangered Species Act
https://secure.earthjustice.org/images/content/pagebuilder/110303_action_sos.jpg
It's hard to understand how some in Congress think they were elected to sacrifice our wildest and most vulnerable creatures for political gain.
This session, Congress took aim at the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in the form of 13 different provisions that would strip funding and authority away from the ESA and its ability to protect our nation’s most vulnerable wildlife.
But, this grim anti-environment faction isn't quitting.
Congress still needs to pass spending bills and when they do so, we expect a new wave of legislative attacks on the ESA and other cornerstone environmental laws.
A recent poll shows that most Americans agree on the importance of protecting endangered species.
Ninety-two percent agree that decisions about wildlife management and which animals need protection should be made by scientists, not politicians; 90 percent agree that the ESA has helped hundreds of species recover from the brink of extinction; and 87 percent agree that the ESA is a successful safety net for protecting wildlife, plants and fish from extinction.
During the budget battle, we will be in the halls of Congress, as we have all along, to defend against attacks on the ESA.
Will you stand with us? We stand for keeping:
The polar bear's Arctic Ocean homeland, which already is feeling the impacts of climate change, free from unsafe and risky drilling practices
Salmon abundant and healthy in rivers threatened by political water deals
The haunting voice of gray wolves echoing throughout the Northern Rockies, where for decades it had been silenced
Please take time now to tell your Congressional representatives to support science-based wildlife management and to oppose any legislation that would weaken protections for any American wild animal and the Endangered Species Act.

President Obama: Protect The Fragile Arctic Ocean
We’re only months away from dangerous and destructive oil exploration in America’s Arctic Ocean. Shell Oil’s ships are steaming towards the remote and fragile waters of Alaska’s northern coast. These waters are home to threatened polar bears, endangered bowhead whales, walrus, seals, birds that range through every state in the Union, and many species of fish. Drilling in these waters threatens these species and the vibrant indigenous Alaska Native culture that depends on a healthy Arctic Ocean, both already under stress from rapid climate change.
April 20 will mark the two-year anniversary of the tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico where millions of barrels of oil fouled coastlines and nearby communities. In advance of this solemn anniversary, tell President Obama that oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean is simply not worth the risk.
The Arctic Ocean and Native communities that rely on its bounty would be devastated by an oil spill. Conditions in the Arctic Ocean could make oil spill clean-up nearly impossible. Twenty-foot swells, persistent frozen sea conditions, hurricane force winds, and darkness for months of the year would be just some of the obstacles faced in cleaning up oil spilled in the Arctic Ocean. The region is also remote—1,000 miles from the nearest Coast Guard station, without a road system or deep-water ports.
Oil drilling could begin as early as this summer unless the president does the right thing and pulls back on this risky exploration. Please tell him that you want the Arctic Ocean protected.

The German government started an initiative called "Dialogue about Germany". Basically the citizens are encouraged to bring forward suggestions about how to improve things. The suggestions get thumbs up online and the initiators of the 10 most popular suggestions will be invited to a meeting with Mr. Merkel in September. Deadline for the vote is April 15th.
A group called "We are the People" (http://www.wir-sind-das-volk.org) submitted the idea, to move the topic of free energy more into the focus of mainstream science etc.
You neither have to be a German citizen nor register somewhere to give a thumbs up, so please go to this page (https://www.dialog-ueber-deutschland.de/DE/20-Vorschlaege/20-Wovon-Leben/Einzelansicht/vorschlaege_einzelansicht_node.html?cms_createdComment=1&cms_idIdea=16768&cms_resourceId=491258&cms_ideaId=16768), scroll down and give a thumbs up.

I reckon she knows about much more outlandish stuff than free energy. But she's a gatekeeper-puppet.
But positioning those people in this dialogue with her might draw some more public attention to this topic.

Well... My response to this is that while all petitions may not succeed in there purpose, the act of having a conscious thought about something that you would like to make better or change is something that makes a difference every single time. If we cannot dream the reality which we want to experience than the result is predictable. It wont be.
Your vote on a ballot or a petition may not make a difference, but when you vote with your consciousness it ripples into the universal consciousness and responds accordingly. Cause and Effect :)

jackovest,
One physical click, alone, at home, may in itself, have little measurable effect. But millions of clicks, on petitions and as supportive gestures, generally, can inspire many a soul. Isolated people may want some sort of path, no matter how small are the stepping stones. Self-education is part of reading petitions and mastering positions. As consciousness moves foreword. The sheep must graze onwards to better pastures and produce more rams to push the general momentum forward. TPTW and 75%? Oh well, that means catch up on histories and who's stories... We need to develop discernment , small trials and errors along the way. Until we discern what to support and what a given petition means and if our conscious support will add synergetic-ally, along the way.
And thanks once again STATIC.

Tell the State Department to Stand Up for Marine Reserves
Right now, less than one percent of the world’s oceans are set aside as marine reserves. That’s why we’re working on a global agreement which would allow the international community to establish a network of marine reserves on the high seas. Unfortunately, the US government seems to be standing in the way of these efforts by refusing to join along with other countries who are in favor of developing a new agreement to create a network of marine reserves.

CISPA is the new, far more dangerous version, of SOPA and PIPA. This petition is just for Facebook support but this needs to be stopped anyway possible.
--
It's going viral: In just over 12 hours, more than 70,000 people have signed on to our campaign to get Facebook to back down from its support for CISPA.
It's the new bill that would obliterate online privacy, give the military crazy new abilities to spy on the Internet, and potentially let ISPs block sites and cut off users accused of piracy
Even if you already have, please use this link to help us push our campaign viral on Facebook:
[fb] If you're already on Facebook, click here to share with your friends.
Then click here to sign on to our open letter urging Facebook to withdraw its support for CISPA.
Or you could just forward the email below on to your friends and/or link your website back to our petition page.
The Center for Democracy and Technology says, "CISPA has a very broad, almost unlimited definition of the information that can be shared with government agencies and it supersedes all other privacy laws."
According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation:
An ISP could even interpret this bill as allowing them to block accounts believed to be infringing, block access to websites like The Pirate Bay believed to carry infringing content, or take other measures provided they claimed it was motivated by cybersecurity concerns.
Internet users were able to push GoDaddy to withdraw its support of SOPA. Now it's time to make sure Facebook knows we're furious.
