You'll only need a single shot of influenza vaccine this year to protect against three strains of the flu, including the H1N1 virus that sparked the 2009 pandemic.

The federal Food and Drug Administration today approved vaccines for the 2010-2011 flu season, and they include drugs to protect against H1N1, another strain of influenza A, Perth, and a strain of influenza B, Brisbane.

The news comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials have announced expanded recommendations that urge everyone older than six months get a seasonal flu shot.

Manufacturers expect to produce about 170 million doses of the new seasonal vaccine, which is higher than the 100 million doses offered in a typical flu season, but lower than the nearly 200 million doses of H1N1 vaccine ordered by the government last year, said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The news comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials have announced expanded recommendations that urge everyone older than six months get a seasonal flu shot.

They really snuck this one in there. Now, I'm quite a skeptic when it comes to vaccines. I've found that proper nutrition and an active lifestyle are much better at preventing the seasonal flu than a jab of thimerosal and dead antibodies. Particularly, Vitamin D plays a crucial role in boosting the immune system. If your immune system is working at it's peak, then you have a very small chance of falling ill in the first place. Being healthy isn't just "not getting sick," it's allowing your body to perform at it's optimal level.

Anyway, here's a good article I found on Vitamin D vs. Flu Vaccines:

Here's where it gets relevant again. Why do we, as a developed society, push synthetic vaccines over proper nutrition and vitamins - which prove to be more effective than the vaccines in the first place? Ask, for example, a few raw-food enthusiasts if they got sick last year. Or the year before. Or the year prior to that. I bet they didn't. Being one myself, I can honestly say that I haven't had the flu since I began this lifestyle years ago.

Back to the vaccine, now. It seems that there is a reason behind the huge push for vaccinating the population. On the most outer level, it can be said that vaccines are money makers, and it's a big money making scheme. I agree with that statement. The pharmaceutical industry loves vaccines because they are such good money getters, but I can't help but think there is a little more to the story.

Control seems to be the name of the game.
