View Full Version : The EGG theory.
This is a theory of life put into a 'story' by Andy Weir...
You were on your way home when you died.
It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.
“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”
“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.
“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”
“Yup,” I said.
“I… I died?”
“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.
You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”
“More or less,” I said.
“Are you god?” You asked.
“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”
“My kids… my wife,” you said.
“What about them?”
“Will they be all right?”
“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”
You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.
“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”
“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”
“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”
“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”
“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”
You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”
“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”
“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”
“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”
I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.
“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”
“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”
“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”
“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”
“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”
“Where you come from?” You said.
“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn’t understand.”
“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”
“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”
“So what’s the point of it all?”
“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”
“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.
I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”
“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”
“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.”
“Just me? What about everyone else?”
“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”
You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”
“All you. Different incarnations of you.”
“Wait. I’m everyone!?”
“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.
“I’m every human being who ever lived?”
“Or who will ever live, yes.”
“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”
“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.
“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.
“And you’re the millions he killed.”
“I’m Jesus?”
“And you’re everyone who followed him.”
You fell silent.
“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”
You thought for a long time.
“Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”
“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”
“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”
“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”
“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”
“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”
And I sent you on your way.

Personally I like this perspective, as it represents sorta what I think, as we are and everything is one. I believe in an infinite universe where everything is and was. Share your thoughts. :D

We always like theories that appeal to our egos! We are not dirt plus water experiencing having to kill other life forms to exist - we're gods, we're everything! Come on...time to study mind control and hypnosis. Time to get brave and take responsibility. No more bed time stories please.

nice story
God is One
so there really is no us
this illusion of individual being
is a sport and play of God
and as everybody knows
the charm of the game is in the rules
and God is the Judge
as well as the players
some will win and some will loose
but God is still the same
I'm glad you guys enjoyed it, I figured you guys would take something away from it.

I don't believe in a 'GOD' persay, I believe we exist in an infinite universe, so I use the phrase nature in replace of 'GOD', the universe works in mysterious ways, it is a incredibly mysterious and beatiful world. Some ask me, how I can live a good life, and not be depressed and not hate and be mean, but to me we are all one, we are everything and everything is we, that to me is all I need in order to enjoy myself fully, and help people to enjoy themselves aswell. Embracing the mystery is key.

i think someone made this mysterious place
so i see the universe as a handi house of God
therefore i try to follow the rules of this house
and be a part of the Family
or else i guess God is gonna kick me out
I dont believe in a beginning and an end, I see things as a circle, that goes on and on for ever and ever, everything is and will be possible. There is no need for a god or a creator, only higher levels of being, just as we look down we also look up.

toad,
The EGG "theory"
theory-(noun) : a proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural and subject to experimentation, in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact.
Proverbs 14:12
King James Version (KJV)
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
This "type of theory" will always be "popular" to those who wish to, in essence, be in charge of their own personal story-line from "beginning to end". They become, in their own mind, a self-appointed "author" of their destiny and its outcome.
The only "problem" with "this theory" is that, sooner or later, it will have no choice but to come "face to face" with the "Ultimate Author"!
Hebrews 12:1-3
King James Version (KJV)
12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
I fully recognize that you have adamantly stated ,.....you "don't believe" in God,....and that,......you "don't believe" in a "beginning and end". However, your unbelief does not, in any way, negate the forward motion and fulfillment of God's Holy Word.
(closing point)
I've heard it told that,...."toad's" that are kissed become changed into something "beautiful and brand new"!
You need, my friend, a "Heavenly Kiss"!,.....and you will be pleased with the "change"!

Would you maybe say what people call "god" is in fact the pressure or energy behind this cycle?
E.g. sustaining it?
Why must people infect a wonderful thread with quotes from a fictional book about a ruthless war god?

Really nice story, and indeed profound.
I also believe it is somewhat like this in reality.
One of my favorite sayings (my own, as far as I know): Reality abhors a vacuum.
That's why God is everywhere and all things - Omnipresence, Omnipotence. And so, ultimately, that's what we all are.
That is what I am.

I like these type of stories, they are easy to read and sort of flow with ease and give one a warm feeling.
Then you say, "I believe in an infinite universe where everything is and was"..., and I get jolted back to reality.
I am wondering about evolution, are we evolving or just taking different rides at the amusement park?
Are we living in a universe with boundaries?
Is there no future?
What are we here for if we can only just choose from what is available?
Did God, or whatever created this all, just run out of ideas and decided, that's it?
Or are we on a beautiful journey to which even God has no vision?
You can choose which one you like if you set your mind free.

conk,
The author of this OP, toad, formulates an opinion/theory that, in reality, attempts to "systematically tear down" the validity of God's Word. Your "one-line sentence" does the "same".
toad goes on to say, later in the thread, that he......"doesn't believe in God, per say",.....and that he......."doesn't believe in a beginning and an end".
Subsequent quotes, from this thread, are very troubling, to say the least. Among them you will find,...."PROFOUND",......"awesome",......"great way of explaining",....."nice story",....."lovely",.....and finally your phrase....."wonderful thread."
I've walked in "your shoes" for nearly half of my life,....and then at age 26 I met God! I, wisely, realized what I had been missing out on and made a dramatic change. In obedience to His Word,....I was "born again", of the "water and the Spirit". I will soon be 58 in October.
You need to try walking in "my shoes", for then, my friend, you will fully come to know what the term "wonderful" really means!!!
As a matter-of-fact,......its almost impossible to put into words!!!,...it's that "wonderful"!!!
1 Peter 1:7-9
King James Version (KJV)
7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
May God Bless and Enrich you all!!!,.......kreagle

tonton,
To you, and many more, this OP may seem "innocent enough" and not actually a "God thing",.....but in reality a "strong case of plagiarism" has just occured before our very eyes, in that the contents of the OP carry a "close imitation" of the thoughts and ideas of the "original Author",....which happens to be our Lord God, Jesus Christ.
To then make matters worse,......the OP then takes a "dramatic turn" into areas that are completely "off-road", in a Biblical sense.
Just a "friendly, Christian reminder" to be mindful of the "direction one is heading in"!

toad,
With this OP coming from someone who readily admits that,..."I don't believe in God, per say",....."tends to replace GOD with "nature",.......and also,....."I don't believe in a beginning and an end", it's actually quite easy to see how someone, as yourself, can get so far off of the Divine intentions and direction of God's Word!
This is certainly not the first time that someone, who really doesn't believe in God to begin with, has endeavored to "make up their own story-line" as to how they perceive things to be. Invariably, this is always done, in an effort to negate the "real story-line" in the Bible, which has become problematic to their way of thinking and the life-style they are living.
The "author" of your "story" relates a tragic incident,....a life is lost,.....faces eternity,....confronts what he "thinks" is God,.....who "does, in fact, identify himself as "God",.....and consequently uses God-like abilities in knowing about his "failing marriage", etc.
Everything, to this point in the story, "appears" to be correct in concept, Biblically speaking,.....but it's here where things take a dramatic turn and literally "run off the pages of the Scriptures!"
The "author" now relates that this "entity" who "claimed to be God",......really didn't look, to the "victim", like God,.....could have been a woman,....or school teacher,....instead of the Almighty When "victim" asks about the destination of his soul,....heaven or hell,.....was told,...."neither",....."you'll be reincarnated"
At this point, there is absolutely no reason to go any further into this "story", in that the "author" just gets further and further off the pages of the Scriptures.
(closing point)
The "author" of this story presents a entity/god who,...."claimed to be God",....and conducted himself as God,......thus I level here the charge of "plagiarism".
Our "real God" would never have "authorized the use of His thoughts and actual concepts",......as indicated in this "story".
Of course,....one would have to actually "believe in God", and have studied his Word, diligently,.....to have known this!
2 Timothy 2:15
King James Version (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The "problem" with this "author's" story, is that,.....it has been presented as "truth",.....when in reality,.....it is anything but the "TRUTH",.......according to the Scriptures!!!,.....and as such can easily seduce someone down a perilious "road of deception".

toad,
(my "actual" quote)
With this OP coming from someone who readily admits that,..."I don't believe in God, per say",....."tends to replace GOD with "nature",.......and also,....."I don't believe in a beginning and an end", it's actually quite easy to see how someone, as yourself, can get so far off of the Divine intentions and direction of God's Word!
(and your reply)
As someone who doesn't submit themselves to any religion or faith, why should I?
"Why should I?",.....my friend, it all simply comes down to a "thing called responsibility"!!!
If you are going to be the "author" of this OP,.....and you were,.....you have to take "responsibility" for the direction that you "steer your readers/audience". You should care, deeply and profoundly, about that,.....especially given the delicacy and eternal importance of the topic you chose to opine about!!
If you will recall and notice, a "majority" of your readers/audience were lavish in their "praise" and in their distributions of, what I will call,....."atta-boys"!!! Whether you know, or recognize it,...."you" played a pivotal role in "steering your readers/audience in a "certain direction" that, in turn, solicited "this kind of response"!
(point blank question)
"Are you ready to accept the consequences that goes along with this type of "steering"?
What "if" the Scriptures,....and Christian faith,.....are "really correct",....and you are wrong? Don't you see the "danger" in your actions?
The "same question, in reverse" can equally be asked of "ME"!!!
What "if" you and your cohorts are "somehow correct",.....and there is no real relevance in God, His Word, Christianity,....and Its concepts?
My response to this question is simple, in that, I will confidently "buffer" myself with the Word of God!! I will let The Word of God speak for Itself!!
Where, and what, is your "buffer"?,....who, or what,...will speak up on your behalf??
(In conclusion)
There was, no doubt, a "complete inbalance" in your OP,....in that,.....the "majority" of those involved, beginning with yourself, basically viewed the contents of this "story" with,...."unbelief in God",....."skepticism, at best",....and very little, if any,..... "real Scriptural knowledge"!!
If you will do a "study" of the word,......"majority",......from a Biblical standpoint,....you will find, for the most part, that it is invariably "never good"!
I, quite simply, was compelled to "try" to give the OP some "balance", from the standpoint of "one" who,......does believe in God,......will never attempt to replace God with "anything" ("nature", etc.),.....and,....does believe in a beginning and an end, (Biblically speaking)!
Yes,....I "know" I'm in the "minority"!!!!
And,....yes,....that's pretty good company to be in,....(Biblically speaking!)
And,....last but not least,...."no",...the "rattling" your hearing is not coming from "my end!"
Love and Peace to all!!!,.......kreagle

I always enjoy it when big spiritual concepts are put into light stories.

mekiac,
Thank you, very much, for your kind words.
The "statement" you've referred to "seems innocent and lovely" on the ''surface",.....but I am compelled to take that "concept" a step further. It's because of my passion for God, that I have equally developed a concrete Bible-based belief system. ( I use the KJV). I, simply, don't put a "division between God and His Word",...the "Two" are the "Same",.....He "IS",....and always "has been",....a God of His Word.
Unlike many of my fellow Avalonians, as I have observed, I have yet to find any contradictions within the Scriptures. I do, simply, believe them to be the Word of God,....inspired and written by "holy men of God" as they were moved upon by the Holy Ghost.
2 Peter 1:20-21
King James Version (KJV)
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
As for your charge,....."the rather narrow-minded appearing content of your posts.",....I, quite frankly,.....plead....."guilty as charged."!!!
It's going to take a "narrow-mind",....one that adheres to God's Word,....in order to find the "narrow-way"!!! , my dear friend!
Matthew 7:13-15
King James Version (KJV)
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Take time, here, to "take in" the warning that Jesus gives us in verse 15 above!!
(It's the "innocent looking things of life",.....that will wind up devouring you,....if you don't "keep your guard up"!)
In closing,....I ask you to observe my post (#16),...in this same thread,....and my reply to "conk". It has to do with "changing shoes" when I was 26 years old. I will soon be 58 in October.
I was, indeed,....."born again", of the "water and the Spirit"!
A,...."miracle",......"transformation",.... occured, in my life, on February 22, 1981.
On "that day" I was filled with the "Holy Ghost",....and I suddenly,....miraculously began to speak in "other tongues",.....a different language from anything I had previously known. I was, now,......"born again!!!"
And with this "Spiritual Infilling",.....came a "profound Spiritual enlightenment"!!!
Perhaps,....."NOW",......you, and others,....can understand my stance and defense of the Word of God!!
I, graciously and lovingly, implore "each of you" to take stock of your lives,....and to take the steps I took,......come walk in "my shoes",....and you'll never be the same, again!
With more love than any of you can imagine!,.......kreagle

Yes, this is indeed helpful for a better understanding. Thank you.
I also have experienced (at least glimpses) of the love of God and am grateful that you try to share it with others.
Many people, however, do have a rather critical stance on the bible and thus your argumentation style won't be of any help for them.
Maybe it would be more helpful, if you base your posts on your unconditional love and not on the scriptures.
This would be easier to understand for most (if not all) people.
Whatever you do: I am very happy that you have found your way to God and that you want to share it with us :o

mekiac,
I genuinely believe you mean well in your reply to my post,....but I also believe that you are not taking into consideration the entire scope of what you are saying.
I blame this,....certainly not on you, at all,....but on the "fact" that we are all living in a society that "wishes" to live/reside,... only,... in an "ice-cream/cake" type world. This "mentality" has spread across, not only the corporate world we live in,....but certainly, and especially, the "spiritual" world also.
Let me explain.
In my "youthful" years, growing up,.....I would have told you that you were crazy if you thought I would "ever" like,.....let alone, eat,.....items such as collard greens,....squash,.....steamed cabbage,.....okra,.....broccolli,....,(and the list goes on, etc.) However,......I sure did like,....and "still do",......"ice-cream/cake"!!!
Mama never had a problem getting me to "clean my ice-cream/cake platter"!!,.....but she had a "battle on her hands" when it came to the "vegetables". Little did I know that she understood the "value" of the nutrients/vitamins that her "little boy" needed in order to properly grow up and to be "healthy".
You see,...it took "maturity",....me "growing up",....to realize that I just couldn't get by on "ice-cream/cake" alone. I needed my "vegetables"! Miraculously, as I grew up, I suddenly found myself "acquiring a taste" for the aforementioned vegetables,....and not only "acquiring a taste",.....but actually a "longing" for them in my diet!!!
"Ice-cream/cake" is the "unconditional love" you speak about in reference to God!,....and I couldn't agree more than that,....It is still just as "sweet as ever" and I still "eagerly clean my plate" with each serving that I receive from the Master!!!
However, there still persists the "immature" problem,....."especially" in the Spiritual, Christian circles,......that "most everyone" is only interested in their "ice-cream/cake"/"unconditional love" serving,....and are "offended" if they are "served anything else"!!!!
(note: what you see as an "argumentation style" from me, is in reality, just a simple "serving of vegetables" meant for sound, spiritual growth!!!)
Need I say what the "vegetables" represent?
Matthew 4:4
King James Version (KJV)
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
I respectfully submit to one and all, that bread alone sounds like "ice-cream/cake"/"unconditional love" and that "every word" sounds a whole lot like "vegetables" to me.
If our "mama's" know what "their little boy/girl" need, in the way of nutrients/vitamins, in order for us to grow up and become "healthy" in our "natural bodies",......just think what our Heavenly Father "knows" that "we all need" in order to become "healthy" in our "spiritual bodies"!!
2 Timothy 3:15-17
King James Version (KJV)
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
So you see, mekiac,.....when you ask me for posts containing "unconditional love" and not on the "Scriptures",.......you are,....in reality,....asking me for,........
"Ice-cream/cake",......and "hold" the "vegetables"
.......and "even" Mama knows better than that!!
.......my,...my....my.....I believe I'm gonna go get me some "ice-cream/cake"!!!!
.......I could sure use some about right now!!!!
Love,...."unconditional love",.....and Peace!,.......kreagle

Thankyou, Kreagle,The perception of one and there for there interpretation of the same will never be equal or the same for all.
It is not something that bothers me as I see others with equally indeapth interpretations and truths.
What ever works for you!Your growth just like mine is important.
If you paint your road with a selection of colors and another paints there road with other colors, it does say a lot about things. The main theme being the road and to where one allows it to go.For me this is our own making with the tools we have or the tools we allow ourselves to use.
My post was not in anyway intended to offend nor irritate the opinions of others.
As it is obvious that differences is what helps us to learn and grow. The variety of opinions is a greater school than that of one alone.

tonton,
Thank you, very much, for your kind words.
Truer words cannot be possibly spoken, in that,.....(your quote) "The main theme being the road and to where one allows it to go.",....says an awful lot. Every person will have to face eternity with the results of their "choice of roads" that they've individually selected to follow and pursue in this life! One would be very wise to periodically pause on their "individual road", whatever that may be, and ask themselves,......."am I truly allowing myself to use all the tools which are at my disposal in the construction of my road?",......"am I using the Word of God?"
No offense or irritation taken, my friend!
Love and Peace,.......kreagle

Personally I like this perspective, as it represents sorta what I think, as we are and everything is one. I believe in an infinite universe where everything is and was. Share your thoughts. :D
G'day Toad,
Thanks for the excellent thread and bringing this lovely story to my and others attention.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Kind Regards, :yo:

"Personally I like this perspective, as it represents sorta what I think, as we are and everything is one. I believe in an infinite universe where everything is and was." and, of course everything will be present again in a new form... ..... karma reincarnated...... .... but what is beyond what one can sense as present that touches grains of past and future? What is with a zero ground?

.. the universe works in mysterious ways, it is a incredibly mysterious and beatiful world. Some ask me, how I can live a good life, and not be depressed and not hate and be mean, but to me we are all one, we are everything and everything is we, that to me is all I need in order to enjoy myself fully, and help people to enjoy themselves aswell. Embracing the mystery is key.
Nice post Toad!
