View Full Version : How karma is produced.

How karma is produced.
There are two types of ignorance, ignorance of one's true nature and the maintenance of that ignorance. This twin activity contaminates our basic space and so the afflictive emotions arise and we react, from this karma is generated.
All phenomena are like dreams: the confusion is that we take this as reality.
If we do not examine it's nature, we take it as we perceive it...!?
The conviction that we have an enlightened nature doesn't mean we have actualised our basic being. We have to practise to go beyond the intellectual understanding. But we do need this conviction.
Every time we react (re-enact) we create an imprint in the mind, a library of judgements and reactions, which spew out when our button is pressed. Thus creating the cause for another effect and so another cause. This chain reaction is called karma... as you sow, so you reap, tit of tat, an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.
We are definitely not in control!
If I smile at you, you will smile at me, if I criticise you, you will criticise me. It's the law of nature, attract attracts, repulse repulses. But we can counteract this by finding inner neutral space.
We can disengage the engine, switch of the over heated motor, and take a rest.
It can stop now, only now, and it is such a relief! For once, there is nothing to defend, or attack.
We are not going to stop the world reacting, but we can stop “ourselves” reacting. We can stop ourselves trying to prove a point, to score a point. This is the second ignorance – maintenance of self-interest.
If we all only do 'our thing' we will always be at logger heads, no one will ever agree. So there can be no unity or harmony. This is the creation of subtle division, and that is exactly what those in power want!
We can at least agree to disagree with kindness.
Of course I'm reacting by writing this, but hey, no one's perfect!

Please tell me if Karma comes about in other ways - e.g. can someone be born with Karma from a past existence? Also, if you hurt someone accidentally & without any malice, are you responsible for this too?
Also, let's assume I've done something on purpose (e.g. leave my mother in a rest home, without visiting her & now she's died) - how can I resolve this Karma I'd have? E.g. is mediating and "being sorry" enough?
Many thanks for anyone who replies.

Thanks Tony,
I think I have the angle I need to become an observer rather than a reactionary participant, "Tiredness!".
I simply cannot be bothered with any of it any more, and I say this with no energy attached to it, I am bored and wish to stop this insane and miserable cycle.
There is so much more out there than defending an ego or scoring points in a game where the winner is the loser even though there can be no winners, only whinners!
I am up for the challenge, lets move on....

This might help the real question. Do you need to worry? No.
Karma is the corrective principle. Some people call it balance. And some people call it payback.
Whatever you believe it to be, it will still be what it is.
No one likes unpleasant experiences. We like to call them 'bad' karma,
but that's a bit like the superstition that God demands ransoms and sacrifices. It's just silly. Let it go.
There is no such thing as 'bad' karma. Just healing mistaken ideas about yourself. And you only have a single human lifetime from which you come and go.
If you can imagine that 'you' have always been 'you'.
So yes, correction follows you here.
You may have experiences that you'd think should accrue 'debts' because your Soul agenda demanded that you have them.
Your Soul has one agenda, to fully awaken you in form. Whatever it takes. WHATEVER it takes.
They could in fact be corrections themselves. Maybe for you, maybe for the sake of another. You can't know, because the changes in you are the only part of them that matters.
You are not responsible for the content of a dream. Your job is to allow and forgive and accept, until everything is safely within your acceptance of it.
It's all you. Just your own ideas. Whatever you reject just waits for your acceptance.
You can see that perhaps there are some who cannot be corrected. Whether there are or aren't is irrelevant,
do you think you're one of them?
I hope that's an easy question. And I hope your answer also answers your doubts.
But kindness and thoughtfulness and honesty are choices that you can make that accelerate your awakening.
You could concentrate on them.

Hello Mulder,
I suppose it is whatever one's conscience is aware of. Real regret is a healer, because it shows one is aware, and may not do it again.
I asked this question about accidents...accident do happen. No intention there, just clumsiness!
Karma does follow us from life to life, that is precisely why has to be very careful, and mindful.
karma is what drives us in the death state.
How to resolve karma? Be kind to oneself, don't feel guilty, be kind to others, don't blame.
Every moment is created by our karma, it is karmically produced. normally we just react and the same sort of things keep happening to us, because of our karmic filter we see through. Just be not reacting, we do not produce karma. We can then respond from compassion, but that can take many forms! We can also acquire good karma, and nice things happen, and that is difficult to deal with. We must not claim that or it turns to bad karma. So, our good and not so good actions we have to drop.
Regarding how we treat say a mother in a home. This is such a delicate matter, and I talk form experience. In the past we did not have enough data, about ourselves, and our loved ones. We spoke and did things in ignorance. Mum's too have their karma. However i tried to love my Mum, it was never enough, or right. So I said things I should not have.
When she died I did many prayers for her, and wished her well. The main thing was, I cut my feeling of guilt, as that did not help. If one entertains the idea of reincarnation, then every sentient being has been your mother...there are Mums everywhere!

Absolutely. A good heart creates an easy path. However, to keep the tap running we have to let go of the good karma as well.

Love everything you said in your post, markpierre, but the above stood out for me. Thank you.
My outlook on that which we call Karma: It's simply a big mirror of everything you've done, said, thought, etc., (good and bad) to help you see yourself objectively - the purpose being to help you towards your goal of awakening.
Look at it this way, if you put your finger on a hot stove and didn't get burned, you would end up destroying or at least badly hurting your body. What we call Karma is the same for the soul - it's not to reward or punish us, but to teach. Learn or keep getting burned until you do learn.

Hi Tony, I've never thought of karma in quite such a way, so let me ask you by example if I'm getting you correctly here. Twice in about the last week, I've seen something, and then upon further inspection it wasn't that at all. Tha last time was a couple days ago sitting here at the desk on the computer, probably talking to my fellow misfits here. I noticed something odd next to the mouse, and it was a little tiny toad. The reason I saw a tiny little toad is because a swarm of tadpoles has recently come ashore in our back yard, and I have to watch every step to make sure I don't step on one. The brain saw a shape, and the first familiar form it came to in it's vast files to compare and identify, was a toad. Therefore I saw a toad.
Upon for further inspection, because I was wondering how in the hell a little tiny toad had hopped up on the desk, the little tiny toad turned out to be a dead fly. It really was a fly too, so that settled my curiousity about super toad. But, what if I hadn't bothered with the curiosity, and therefore a further in depth observation? Why, I'd be going around looking on top of the coffee table, chairs, or any piece of furniture of such height to make sure no more toads had hopped up.
I'd probably be embarrassing myself too, telling people we have these incredible hopping baby toads at our house. "Trust me, I've seen it". http://www.bigtenfever.com/forums/images/smilies/rofl.gif
So, is that how you're describing karma in this instance? Basically, a case of mistaken identity, due to poor observational skills?
Cheers Mate!

I used to believe in karma as something that was not in my control, that is until I had a near death experience and went through a life review. What I experienced changed my views on karma to an understanding that everything I had done in my life was perfect for my learning. The life review was quick but thorough and included all the emotions I had helped cause in others or harm I had done to others. The feeling was one of compassion and understanding for the human I had been and also for the other players/actors in my life. There was no harsh judgment and there was no karma accrued. All was released.
I think the theory of karma is often used as a control mechanism, much as many religions use the threats of punishment for sins as a control mechanism. Anyone who chooses to accept that they will be "punished" karmically or have karmic debts is free to believe that. I do not accept any consequences of my actions in this play here in 3D other than the immediate and long term consequences that always happen for all our actions while we are still here in this life. I will not be controlled through fear of karmic consequences just as I will not be controlled through fear of God's punishment for my sins. It is a choice to believe these long taught theories. I refuse to believe guru's, preachers, teachers or "holy" men who try to limit me or instill fear in me about ANYTHING.
I only need to forgive myself. Everything I do and experience is a learning experience or a game for my *self* and everything I do to another is done to myself. It's all perfect and we ARE all one with the Source.

Dear Fred,
What you are describing there is "mistaking a rope in the shadows for a snake!" This is an allegory, of mistaking an idea in the mind to be real, when on observation it is found not to be real. Having seen that, one never sees the 'projection' as real again. Like emotions!
Karma. Mistaking karma to be real, that's interesting.
You are right karma is not real, but we still live in a seemingly real world, so it has to be played out, but not taken as real or a big deal. Whatever response that comes up in the mind, comes from past experience. It is a product of the past (karmic effect). All we do is stop for a moment, let the moment pass, plus the emotion. This creates a gap in our usual patterning....and voila...a new you! You have just broken out of the box.
Of course we have to do this many times, to stabilise. Suddenly we find we are not the same anyone. We just take each moment as it comes.
We still need a bit of ego to function...just enough to get out of the way of an on coming truck!
Any chance of a photo of the tadpoles?

I think it is a lot simpler than most people allow themselves to think.
A lot of people seem to use Karma as a label of a consequence to a "bad" thing, one that ensures eventual balancing acts.
If Karma was a balancing principle - no one would build schools or help other people for fear of some nasty karmic retribution - and you simply cannot have it both ways.
I see karma, simply as a kind of multidimensional inertia carried on in the fabric of our realities.
The ongoing distortions in creation caused by any act; and one that is just as much ours as the ongoing cause and effect cycles that are set up. All our responsibilities.
So in this model Karma does relate to consequences, and that is because karma is a label for the changes in the manifest creation in which we operate caused by an act. Those changes are made that will directly alter the ongoing environment in which we experience our incarnation - and may very well cause things that appear to be balancing.
When there is a cycle of karmic cause and effect that needs to be stopped, which is playing back and forth between self and other-selves, it is a "wheel"
The wheel of karma is stopped by forgiveness.
Forgiveness is also a creative act of great power, powerful enough to fix "karma"

http://www.tarot.com/articles/karma/what-is-karma.php
Karma is a Sanskrit word that means "action." Karma has commonly been considered a punishment for past bad actions, but karma is neither judge nor jury. Rather, it is simply the universal law of cause and effect that says every thought, word and act carries energy into the world and affects our present reality. Karma can also refer to the "work" we have ahead of us, which includes lessons from both our past and present lives.
Why Is Karma Important?
Part of our life's work is to understand our individual relationship to the cosmos … to understand how the universe affects us. Based on the principle that individual behavior mirrors universal patterns, the tiniest act -- a thought, for example -- can have enormous impact. The energies our thoughts and actions produce can cover the entire planet, or even beyond, in the blink of an eye. An examination of karma offers clues about our intended life purpose, showing us the psychic imprint of past lives and mapping the way out of behaviors and thoughts that are no longer useful to us.
When Will I See the Benefits?
Unfortunately, not all good actions have immediate rewards. You might see the positive results of positive actions tomorrow, you might see them in your next lifetime or you might not see them at all. You might be thinking, "If I'm not going to benefit, what's the point?" There is one. Every positive action you take has a positive effect, whether you see it or not. You just need to trust in the universe.
If Bad Things Happen to Me, Does It Mean I Have Bad Karma?
Not necessarily. Sometimes bad things happen, but they have positive effects later. Let's say you're super ambitious, always on the go and wildly successful. Then you get into an accident and are hospitalized for several months. It may seem like you ended up in the hospital because you were being punished for past bad deeds. What if that accident taught you to value your life, and slow down enough to actually enjoy it, instead of being so focused on the end goal? In that way, the accident would actually be a blessing, rather than a curse. Likewise, winning the lottery may seem like a reward, but what if you forgot about the value of intangible things, and focused only on acquiring material things? In that case, something good brought with it negative energy.
Can You Change Karma?
Your soul is on a journey. Karmic situations in which you find yourself today are both your soul's mirror and travel guide. Karma can show you where you've been and where you might go to learn the lessons you've chosen for this lifetime.
Through understanding your unique destiny, you can adjust your actions to either change an ongoing situation, or gain new perspective on a past situation so you can avoid making the same mistake twice. By understanding karma, you can unlock the patterns from past lives and show you how to use the laws of karma to consciously choose a better path for this life and the next.

Karma does not go unnoticed.
Everything we hold on to creates an imprint in the mind.
Every time an event happens the imprint springs forward.
Every time this happens and we hold on, the imprint goes deeper.
Our reactions become a habit, the habit becomes a personality.
Because of this, our world is held together.
And the same things keeps happening to us.
Our world is driven by our karma.
Enlightenment occurs when our karma is exhausted.
Every event is the opportunity, to exhaust karma,
by not re-acting. If one does not react, no karma is created.
Karma is not a judgement imposed on us.
Karma is precisely put there by our judgements,
every time we do a selfish act.
This karmic debt has to be repaid...exhausted!
How do we do this?
By caring about others, more than ourselves!
With this enlightened attitude, enlightenment is guaranteed.
Remember, there good and bad karma,
which both have to be exhausted!
Tony
