Being a spiritual student.

Well, one would need certain qualities, being human is one. Then we have to find some sort of criteria, some values needed. A student is someone who wishes to understand, or stand under some sort of method. Of course we could say being human was enough, but many on this planet are here to only serve themselves, or rely on animal instincts.

Finding out what being spiritual is, is knowing that we are spiritual in being! That is beyond this body and mindset. So, in investigating this topic we begin to realise that all humans are of spirit.

So, what tools are available that everyone might agree on, which could be applied to any path?
Well, we would have to be generous, in knowing that all others were not just their body or set-minds. We would have to have patience with ourselves and others, disciplined to not merely react and be able to persevere in our efforts, and to do that we would need concentration.

Above all we would need self knowledge, beyond this body and mindset. How we do this is up to the individual, but we can get help from like minded people.

Many on these forums talk at cross (very cross) purposes because they have different mind sets. They get cross because they think that others are saying, we should all be the same. This is not possible.

So, we are generally talking about different methods, what suits one may not suit another. It's that simple. It may come as a surprise, that at the end of our findings we may find the same 'non thing', but call it something different.

The funny thing is this generosity, patience, discipline, concentration and self knowledge would be the very same qualities as a teacher...funny that!

A student goes through levels of understanding, it's not just one class. So, some students will know more or less. Now the problem could arise of pride. That's why we need to remind ourselves of, generosity, patience, discipline, concentration to know where 'we' are!

We all learn and teach, learn and teach, it's quite natural. When we learn something, we know, we know it's right, if it's right. We are only re-cognising something we know, but did not recognised that we knew it, until that moment!

The question is, what is constantly getting in the way of us knowing? It's us!

Of course you may see this differently,
Tony

There is no end to being a student. Even if one were enlightened, one would still have to ask questions, to be able to adapt to sentient beings capacities.
There always a little tension between the student and the Student, it seems to trigger something. As a student, when I meet the Student, it can get a little sparky.

Quite often The Student will turn the mirror on me (the student), and the answer comes.

Enlightenment might start with a spark.
What do you think?

Lest not forget our Animistic teachings if you will. That All things have a spirit. We can learn alot from being a mountain. One of the teachings of being a mountain is to be observant, humble and patient. Great Post Tony. Wanishi

If by enlightenment you mean an Aha! moment,
I have had several, and some started with a spark.
But the first one happened because I was thinking so hard
that I drove my mind right off the road
and it became an airplane.
No, not even an airplane... it became a spaceship.

No spark at all, just really intense thought.
The thought I was thinking was
"Where is infinity?"
And the next moment I was there.

There is no end to being a student.

Basically, to be a student all one has to do is have the desire to learn...

As you have said there is no end to being a student; when you have learned all there is to learn you cease to be a student.

I like the student to Student comparison Tony, as opposed to student to teacher, good one!

I'm sure it will be sightly different for all of us. Mine used to come from incredible inner anguish, and as you say much thought. Now I can't get rid of the bloody things!
