This week the Gillard Government introduced a carbon dioxide tax it promised we'd never get.

WHAT'S happened to my country? How is it that the practical, no-bull nation now finds itself led by the likes of Craig Emerson?

Consider this past week and weep.

We've had the Government foist on us a carbon dioxide tax it promised we'd never get - a tax opposed by two-thirds of Australians.

Moreover, it's a tax that will kill jobs, threaten power supplies and raise bills - all to stop a global warming that paused a decade ago.

It's a tax that would make such little difference to the temperature anyway that not one government member dares say how much - or, to be more accurate, how immeasurably little.

Plenty of questions for a serious government to answer - about democracy, mandates, mass hysteria, jobs and useless gestures.

So, how does Treasurer Wayne Swan answer them this week? By waving a leg of lamb in the air, marvelling that it didn't instantly go up in price.

How did Minister of State Gary Gray respond? By interviewing his mum and laughing about Whyalla, a steel town, not vanishing from the map overnight.

And Trade Minister Craig Emerson? Well, as newspapers in even Rome and London have noted, to their astonishment, he arranged for an ABC crew to film him dancing and singing a song about horror movies and Whyalla.

Serious questions are being answered by fools who clearly assume we're even bigger ones.

How did we get to this? How is it that senior ministers now believe the most stupid stunts and palpable spin are substitutes for clear argument and frank information?

Several things have come together to produce this tsunami of mediocrity and mendacity.

First, the Government is actually selling rubbish, and it's impossible to make people buy trash without telling lies.

Second, the fragmenting media and the yammering competition for attention means the first challenge for a politician today is not to be persuasive but simply to be noticed.

We've seen a treasurer (Peter Costello) dance a macarena on television, another Liberal frontbencher (Joe Hockey) mince with a tutu, a senator (Steve Fielding) dress as a beer bottle and a prime minister (Kevin Rudd) summon 1000 prominent Australians to Canberra simply to provide him with a glittering prop.

Third, there's a renewed tribalisation that leads to people talking more to their own, even in politics, and losing the ability to see themselves through the eyes of wary others.

How else to explain the sheer unknowningness of Prime Minister Julia Gillard's big speech yesterday, in which she could warn of "real and urgent threats from climate change", such as "rising sea levels", "worse bushfire conditions", "droughts" and "extreme heat", but then say of sceptics: "In the end, the doomsayers always have to admit they were wrong."

Er, Prime Minister, that's my line.

And fourth, we're slaves in this Age of Sentiment to a new culture of identity politics, in which seeming trumps doing.

Teenagers now solve world poverty not by sending money but by dancing at free Make Poverty History concerts. Armchair activists fight tyrants not by enlisting in the army but by clicking the share button on a Kony 2012 YouTube clip.

Who cares if there even is a Kony? It's enough to care.

Same thing with global warming. This carbon tax has nothing to do with actually stopping warming, but everything to do with seeming to.

Craig Emerson said in that farcical interview, "the price effects would be 70 cents in every $100." Emerson went on to say, "or in terms of weekly household bills, $9.90 per week with compensation on average of $10.10 per week."

Should I accept their 40 cents per week bribe? HELL NO!

I object to my tax dollars being wasted on paying that bribe that is so blatantly try to fool us into accepting the tax that few Australians want and that they promised we would not have to pay - and that is clearly trying to buy votes to save their collective political carcasses.

The Prime Minister tackled questions on nuclear power, pension increases and the controversial carbon pricing scheme for an hour in the Herald Sun offices in Southgate (click above to replay the conversation).

Many readers took the opportunity to ask Ms Gillard exactly how much compensation they would be receiving based on individual earnings.

Reader Rebecca Reid asked for a straight yes or no answer when she questioned Ms Gillard on why she would introduce a Carbon Tax when polls show the public are against the new tax.

The Prime Minister replied: “…I am absolutely certain the right thing to do is to price carbon and seize our nation a clean energy future. Big important changes are often not popular at the time. Floating the dollar wasn't. Reducing tariffs wasn't either. But we wouldn't have today's prosperity if our nation hadn't faced up to those difficult policy changes."

Despite the massive compensation being paid by the Government, Ms Gillard was bombarded with criticism about the new tax.

I'll say it again... It's all part of the plan. The landlords are going to make us as friggin miserable as possible because they want to get rid of the old system as they have a brand new one ready for us. We have been stubborn tenants and now they are tearing down our apartment building brick by brick until we demand they fix it, at which time they will say, "Oh we have, just move into this brand new shiny one we have ready!" We will gladly do it and realize or maybe not that we are under their absolute complete control and getting it back will be near impossible. They expect the aware to die off, and that will leave only stupid sheep.

It is a global problem, though I am convinced that we need to each fight for national sovereignty to keep the NWO from dissolving borders for their agenda. That doesn't mean we ignore the unity of humankind at all, but to be effective, we each need a workable strategy that will work in our respective countries' legal/political system.

So, though my comments may be about the US, and the US citizens' failure to perform meaningful action to make real change, I encourage my brothers and sisters around the world to put on your thinking caps and figure out the unique way that citizens in your country can effectively fight the tyranny of the Cabal and their minions who have nested in your government. Wherever you are, nothing will really change until the ordinary citizens have replaced the entire cluster of Cabal-annointed, corporate-sponsored officials in your country.

I contend that a large percentage of US citizens do recognize the futility of protest. Protest has been made impotent, and we will never know if by multiplying the numbers of protesters by a thousand would have catalyzed even small, conciliatory changes. The impotence of protest prevents the snowball effect.

I believe the impotence of protest is not just a perception, but a reality. Historically, I believe the civil rights movement protest did work, but a big part of why it worked was that the Financial Elite were not negatively financially affected by the outcome. So, the people were actually fighting against racism, not oligarchs. I'm not so sure the other relatively recent protests (that current activists underscore as a successful protest), the Vietnam War protests, were actually effective or not. We most certainly did NOT alter the war-for-profit paradigm nor slow down the buildup of arms or US bases. Those protests may have slightly altered the end date for *a* war, but did not end war.

I think that on some level, the millions of US citizens that want real change are unwilling to risk involvement because they see no chance of gaining anything - and a near-guarantee that they will be worse off after protesting. The beginning of the second wave of Occupy saw incredible diversity in its ranks and supporters - many people who had *never* actively protested anything before - but soon thereafter, (with no apparent effective plan or strategy), the disenchanted turtles pulled their heads back into their shells.

So, if protest won't work, and violence won't work (unless you are a martyr), and the electoral system is rigged to ensure that minions of the Financial Elite are the only viable candidates, what else is there? I'm confident that the plan and strategy in The Reset Button will work, but why is it resisted by front-line activists? Is there a pathology, a syndrome, in these very active activists that prevents them from trying something beyond protest? Could it be that they do not really want to win? Could it be that they do not wish to escape their captors, their tormentors? So long in the cage they fear the unknown that is outside the cage?

I contend that a large percentage of US citizens do recognize the futility of protest. Protest has been made impotent, and we will never know if by multiplying the numbers of protesters by a thousand would have catalyzed even small, conciliatory changes. The impotence of protest prevents the snowball effect.

I believe the impotence of protest is not just a perception, but a reality. Historically, I believe the civil rights movement protest did work, but a big part of why it worked was that the Financial Elite were not negatively financially affected by the outcome. So, the people were actually fighting against racism, not oligarchs. I'm not so sure the other relatively recent protests (that current activists underscore as a successful protest), the Vietnam War protests, were actually effective or not. We most certainly did NOT alter the war-for-profit paradigm nor slow down the buildup of arms or US bases. Those protests may have slightly altered the end date for *a* war, but did not end war.

I think that on some level, the millions of US citizens that want real change are unwilling to risk involvement because they see no chance of gaining anything - and a near-guarantee that they will be worse off after protesting. The beginning of the second wave of Occupy saw incredible diversity in its ranks and supporters - many people who had *never* actively protested anything before - but soon thereafter, (with no apparent effective plan or strategy), the disenchanted turtles pulled their heads back into their shells.

So, if protest won't work, and violence won't work (unless you are a martyr), and the electoral system is rigged to ensure that minions of the Financial Elite are the only viable candidates, what else is there? I'm confident that the plan and strategy in The Reset Button will work, but why is it resisted by front-line activists? Is there a pathology, a syndrome, in these very active activists that prevents them from trying something beyond protest? Could it be that they do not really want to win? Could it be that they do not wish to escape their captors, their tormentors? So long in the cage they fear the unknown that is outside the cage?

My view is those Americans who did stand up for what we perceived was our national history and traditions have been brow beaten to the point that now they just don't want to deal with most stuff anymore. They say tradition and the groups who hate those traditions (usually an extremely small minority) accuse them of all sorts of negative stereotypes. They get in their faces yell, scream, and ridicule them. The majority of America comes from a Judeo-Christian lineage, and yet they are fearful of standing in their beliefs publicly because of the abuse they have suffered now for decades. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed
the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British, charged as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated.

But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him,and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Rutledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.
Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution.
These were not wild-eyed, rabble- rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. They gave us a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't fight just the British. I received a postcard from my council. Telling me that my dream property that I have been sustainably developing for the past 14 years along permaculture principals. (sheds, lots of rainwater tanks, fruit and nut orchard, garden beds, fenced off animal yards, etc...) ...Is now "PROTECTED" and also classified as "WATERSHED". The postcard also informed me that I could no longer develop or build on my property and that all of the houses on other properties in the area were no longer compliant. I rang the council and asked them what I and my neighbors were required to do to become compliant. They said there was nothing that could be done to gain compliance as the area was no longer zoned for housing. We could still have access to our land but due to new SA govt. regulations we cannot live on our land, have even a pet dog on our own land let alone develop it.

I was pissed of to say the least. So I did some investigating. I considered selling my property and buying somewhere that I could start to build my dream "again". What I discovered was that under "AGENDA 21" there is really no decent land that isn't deemed protected. The same "AGENDA 21" article set out a gradual vacation of properties (starting with rural areas) but with the ultimate goal of emptying all of South Australia. Except for "CARETAKER" workers to oversee designated operations here (SOLAR AND WIND FARMING AND MINING). I was curious to know where we were all going to be "PUT".

Apparently we are to be "ACCOMMODATED" in "CORPORATE CITIES' in Western Australia. Each person will be generously be given "TIME-SHARE" in a 2 square meter cubicle. The rest of our time will be spent working for the company.

I have to say that after I had finished reading this article about my supposed "NEW LIFESTYLE", I found nothing really compatible with my permaculture ideals.

I now go to sleep at night wondering why I have wasted so many years trying to create a self-sufficient and environmentally sustainable future for myself and my family, if one day soon I might not even be able to have access to my property.

Just for interests sake I did a property search on mega farm in the valley below us, which directly benefits from my water runoff. Would it surprise anyone to know that the "AUSTRALIAN" company which "OWNS" it, has a majority shareholding of CHINESE" bodies.

AGENDA 21 is the blueprint behind every new decision the "ELITE" make. The veneer of freedom and democracy is wearing pretty thin these days. The media is working overtime churning out propaganda 24/7. I stopped watching TV years ago as did some of my friends. We are awake to what's really going on. Just listening to the radio or reading the paper is extremely irritating. I appear to have lost my tolerance for it. On the flip side are my friends and family who watch TV every day religiously. They are now completely brainwashed and regurgitate all of the currant propaganda word for word. What ever the latest catch fraise is you can be sure to hear it repeated "ad-nauseam"by devoted "Viewers / Consumers". My Mother had the audacity to recently demand to know "How my children would ever learn anything, without access to TV". This came from the same woman who wouldn't let me watch TV, because "TV ROTS THE BRAIN". See how easy it is to brainwash people into believing just about anything.

This is one of the things that many people don't understand.
The State (or in the case of Australia 'the Crown') owns the land and grants access and certain rights to property "owners" to reside on and develop it.

For example, in Australia the State owns the land under every property (from memory I think it's something like after 15 metres below the property but that's just a guess) which is why there are separate arrangements for mining on a property that you "own".

In the US the reclamation of "private" property is part of the Constitutions 5th Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution#Eminent_domain) and is called 'eminent domain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminent_domain)'.

In Australia it is Section 51(xxxi) (http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/coaca430/s51.html) of the Constitution.

Essentially the State at any time has the right to remove a property from the registry and pay reasonable recompense to the "owners" (this is referred to as 'on just terms' in the Australian Constitution).

It has been placed into the minds of the populace that they "own" property, which to a limited extent they do. What this does is remove from the public consciousness the fact that they are granted the right, by the State, to reside on, and trade in, State land (until the State has another use for the land).

Firstly I am mortified and feel for you.
The amount of work you've done should be commended not re-bloody-zoned...

Have you and/or your neighbours been in contact with a lawyer regarding what your rights are in this case?
Maybe try your local community legal centre for an idea of what can be done (though they may not be able to help you they can direct you to someone with expertise in this particular field - ask if they know someone who would handle it pro bono as it doesn't hurt to ask):

What legislation are they acting under to justify this change (or re-classification) to zoning?
Was this done by the Federal Govt, State Govt or local council?
It appears to be local government, working off State EPA watershed protection legislation, but would like some clarification.
Is this part of the Mount Lofty Ranges watershed protection program?
As far as I was aware, in this case, it was only applicable to new development applications and I didn't think it was to be applied retrospectively...
I admit that I am not up to date on water resource management practices and am curious as it seems that this is being done in a retrospective fashion. I hadn't come across that before so want to know more as it is a dangerous approach that has broader ramifications.

I'm a tad confused why it appears in your case there wasn't community consultation done as that is usual practise, as far as I am aware, in these instances.

If you don't mind which council is this?
How big is the area being re-classified as "Protected" (if Mount Lofty then it's 2km either side from memory)?
How many properties are being rezoned and what are their sizes (rough guestimate is fine)?
How many people is this effecting?

I am aware of the dangers of 'Agenda 21' and view it mostly as a means of centralising control and power while privatising everything (typical neoliberalism gone mad).

The exact same thing in Canada, exact. You have gaz on your property, guess what, it is down under, so it is not yours. they will just give you money for scraping your land, and not what is truly worth. The difference being that the land is own by the provinces, which makes lobbying a bit easier for the citizens.

This is integrated into all States world wide.
It is part of the control and power mechanism that the State uses on its population.
For some unknown reason most people aren't aware of this and I've had some get all upset when I point it out.

We are merely stewards for the land and nothing more.
The only thing we own is our individual sovereignty (which is complex in most circumstances and depends on the way you describe "individual sovereignty" and the way the State describes it, ultimately the State definition wins because of its monopoly on Money, Control and Power and its "legitimate" coercive practices).
Everything else is granted to us.
