There is a city with very calm residents which local government decided on , no need traffic light in city limits and it worked 14 years without accident .

In blackouts, I'vd sern where all drivers stop at an intersection and take their turn as if a cop was directing traffic.
However, in some cities blackouts means that alarms don't work and it's looting time.
It all depends on where you live.

If this is ever tried in Istanbul, I swear I will drive in that city next time i go. Up to now, even crossing an avenue of foot is scary, I never wanted to drive there - Oh! did I like cabies there, they understand sign language and are genious at driving in crazy traffic (even if reaaaallly scary rides at first when one does not trust their agility yet).
For American, I am talking of a 15 millions inhabitants city where a 3 lanes highway is transformed into a 5 lanes all day long.... And try to find the streets names in some street, you are lucky if you do "nerde" (where is) becomes a very handy word. Better on sea bus.
Altogether, this is a wonderful city, absolutely beautiful, almost mystic, with a deep sense of receiving guest and tourism ingrained in the Turkish mentality. Food beats the French in my opinion (and I am of French origins). I suggest anyone to see Istanbul and visit Turkey at least once in their life.
This should be sent to the mayor of Montreal.

When I was young I choose to travel alone with my backpack, now-days I become fragile bodily and heartily and chose less messy travels.
My first choice of visiting a different country is having a local host, if I have not that one ,second is a travel company .
I was lucky when I visit Valencia(Spain) and Istanbul(Turkey) I had very generous and humble hosts at both.

Me too in Istanbul. In fact, I lived there about 6 months a year for a good 4 years (word related). I had good company in Paris as well when visiting. And in London. You are right, this is a key to understanding.

I wouldn't know that Spain has fiestas every weekend at different towns(reachable by small car with 6 people in it) End drinks were free:o without a host.
