Gore Vidal, the American writer, controversialist and politician manqué, who died aged 86, a short time ago.
Vidal described his homeland the "United States of Ammesia". He stated further "the United States was founded by the brightest people in the country - and we havent seen them since...Congress no longer declares war or make budgets. So that's the end of the constitution as working machine." He also had the belief that the US is "rotting away at a funereal pace. We'll have a military dictationship pretty soon, on the basis that nobody else can hold everything together." He did also believe the the US wasnt even a democracy, but a sort of "militarised republic".
It seems at least in part some of his beliefs are coming true. The implementation National Defense Authorization Act has some disturbing connotations.
