Why nasa decided to show this particular example for the curiosity camera I don't know. However they love to hide facts about themselves in plain site because people overlook it so quickly.

Not a joke. Read the narrative under the picture. It's a demonstration of the camera's capabilities. Now, the question is why they chose that particular image.
