To fight West Nile, Dallas plans an aerial defense
By By SARAH KUTA, Associated Press – 2 hours ago
DALLAS (AP) — The last time Dallas used aerial spraying to curb the mosquito population, Texas' Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, Mission Control in Houston was launching Gemini missions and encephalitis was blamed for more than a dozen deaths.
But for the first time in more than 45 years, the city and county planned Thursday to resume dropping insecticide from the air to combat the nation's worst outbreak of West Nile virus, which has killed 10 people and caused at least 200 others to fall ill.
"I cannot have any more deaths on my conscience because we did not take action," Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said.
Although commonplace in other major cities, the efforts are provoking a debate in the Dallas area between health officials trying to quell disease risk and people concerned about insecticidal mist drifting down from above.
Nearly half of all West Nile cases in the United States so far this year are in Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If the trend continues, 2012 will be the worst West Nile year in state history.

It is noble to hear the Dallas Mayor Mike say these words. But that wont stop the creators of the West Nil Virus.
This will slow down the virus and make the rest of the population sick in his area but won't prevent from being replanted in his area. Not really attacking the origin of the problem.
He must have a short term vision or planning his next election.
Well that was my 2 cents.

I live 30 miles north of Dallas. I kept my cat indoors last night, as they were spraying my neighborhood for West Nile Virus mosquitoes.

I hope you keep a close eye on the population there and be careful Paul. Watch the plant life too. These bastards are treating us like a bad weed in the garden so to speak. I found another article of the same too.
Dallas West Nile aerial pesticide spraying to begin overnight
http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-dallas-west-nile-spray-20120816,0,607038.story
Added: It reminds me of the phrase from the emergency broadcast system, "This is only a test".
PS: Paul, you can head to Dubya's place, they are going to avoid spraying that area! Go figure huh?
From the article:
The home of former President George W. Bush is an area that was scheduled to be sprayed, but it is one of several places pilots were told to avoid, it, according to KTVT.

Looks like their stepping it up a notch tonight.
HOUSTON--Aerial pesticide spraying in the Dallas area overnight to combat the deadly spread of mosquito-borne West Nile virus was impeded by rain, and planes were able to cover only about half the area they had targeted, officials said.
Officials plan to ramp up efforts Friday night, however, doubling the number of planes to four and possibly taking off a bit earlier, according to Laura McGowan, a spokeswoman for Clarke, the Roselle, Ill.-based mosquito control company hired by the city and county to spray.

piperonyl butoxide
A 2011 study found a significant association between piperonyl butoxide in personal air collected during the third trimester of pregnancy and delayed mental development at 36 months. Children who were more highly exposed in personal air samples (≥4.34 ng/m3) scored 3.9 points lower on the Mental Developmental Index than those with lower exposures. The lead researcher stated, "This drop in IQ points is similar to that observed in lead exposure. While perhaps not impacting an individual's overall function, it is educationally meaningful and could shift the distribution of children in the society who would be in need of early intervention services."

Side Effects
Pyrethroids:
Inhalation: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, runny or stuffy nose, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
Skin contact: rash, itching, or blisters.
Long term effects: disrupts the endocrine system by mimicking the female hormone, estrogen, thus causing excessive estrogen levels in females. In human males, its estrogenizing (feminizing) effects include lowered sperm counts. In both, it can lead to the abnormal growth of breast tissue, leading to development of breasts in males and cancerous breast tissue in both male and females.
Neurotoxic effects include: tremors, incoordination, elevated body temperature, increased aggressive behavior, and disruption of learning. Laboratory tests suggest that permethrin is more acutely toxic to children than to adults.
Other: A known carcinogen. There is evidence that pyrethroids harm the thyroid gland. Causes chromosomal damage in hamsters and mice; deformities in amphibians; blood abnormalities in birds.

I live in North Carolina and a family of friend of my boss went white water rafting last Tuesday, came home and didn't feel well, then began to speak incoherently, was taken to the emergency room and was dead by Saturday morning. Diagnosis: West Nile Virus.
Life is precious, enjoy the ride.

West Nile Is All Over The U.S.
BQ-aWNeDEaw
of course Fox News says the spray is safe! lol!
ADDED: I think this virus needs to be watched closely as it's spreading rather fast and the media is fear-mongering bigtime with it.........yet there is no cure for it and it is rather dangerous and could mutate with flu season coming soon.

of course Fox News says the spray is safe! lol!
Couldnt tell yah whether the spray being sprayed is toxic or not...growing up in the florida..spraying was a common occurrence during the summer..sometimes as kids playing outside (in the 70's) we would run indoors when we heard the trucks coming with the spray..Cough, Cough :painkiller: Lol! so ofcourse i couldnt tell u if its the same chemicals they used but i wanted to say its not new to have trucks driving through neighborhoods spraying to combat mosquitos...
Also experienced something i have not experienced previously...being unusually sick . I felt soar in ALL muscles in my body, the aches in my neck and shoulders were brutal, at one point making me feel like throwing up from the aches! Back very stiff and ofcourse very tired, it lasted a while. Because ive been following sun stuff and feeling different feelings with the solar activity, i didnt pay much mind. I saw the warnings about west nile, read the symptoms (which were all i was experiencing)..and thought hummmm, could be..so i barreled down...drank juices, water, burnt sage--fried myself in the sun so i sweat like crazy...and eventually began to feel "normal" again. It is very nasty and i could see how it could make crucial turn in making someone seriously ill.
Im putting this out there in case someone may be feeling bad and it doesnt mean u necessarily have to be in fear. burning Sage helped a great deal!..it calmed the nerves
IN any event, i cant freak or worry about everything thts "coming" down the pike...MY END OF THIS WORLD WILL COME SOMEDAY!!!
Dont need to heed the guy in the stands pretending to shoot the gun for the race...always faking it...DO YOU KNOW what that would do to a runner always jumping and being played by the guy with the gun!!! Creates a bit of anxiety over time :whip:

The MSM is making this viral, (no pun intended)....
I'm predicting (or wouldn't be surprised) that a "miracle vaccine" being invented soon and the gov forcing everyone to be inoculated with it (so we can be safe of course).
West Nile outbreak largest ever in U.S.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/22/health/west-nile-virus/index.html
Added: when cnn, fox, msnbc etc take a story and start their fear-mongering campaign with it, that usually means there is some kind of "action" being drafted.....in this case, probably a miracle vaccine.
I'm watching this West Nile Virus development closely, got a bad feeling about it.....

Is there anything to combat this?
Nothing yet as far as I know, but I've read in a few places they are working intensely on coming up with a "vaccine"....which could be actually worse than the virus itself as history has occasionally proven.

But this article says the vaccine won't be on the market for another 5 to 10 years????????
...yet they have vaccines for horses???????????

Symptoms of fear and paranoia...this is how easy the media can "shift" a population in to a state of fear and paranoia.....and then in to mass confusion. They speak with a forked tongue; "The skeeters will bite and make you sick, possibly killing you, but, if you get bit by one, don't worry, it's only a harmless mosquito bite!" sheesh,
With hundreds of human cases of the West Nile Virus being reported across Texas and more than a dozen related deaths in North Texas it seems some people are overreacting and calling 911 when they’re bitten by a mosquito.
In short, health officials say a mosquito is not a health emergency.
“We understand peoples concerns regarding the West Nile Virus, but in the absence of any symptoms of West Nile then a simple mosquito bite is really not a reason for someone to call 911,” said Matt Zavadsky, public affairs director for MedStar Emergency Medical Services.
One woman called Fort Worth 911 requesting assistance because her young nephew had a bump on his arm.
