100 Year Old Package From Norway

Stocks in oil? Historical documents? A small treasure? Speculation over what might be inside a 100-year-old package that's set to be unsealed this Friday in a small town in Norway abounds, according to Verdens Gang, a Norwegian newspaper.

Verdens Gang explains that the package has been kept in a museum in Gudbrandsdal and dates all the way back to August 26th, 1912. It carries a note from a man named Johan Nygard, specifying that it is not to be opened until 2012.

There are few clues about what the package might contain. What is known is that Nygard was involved in local politics and that he reportedly walked up to the mayor and handed him the package telling him that its contents would "benefit and delight future generations," according to a video that was posted the Verdens Gang website.

Wow, if this were happening in the U.S. or Canada, they wouldn't even TELL people about the envelope, let alone have a ceremony to bring people together and open up the envelope in front of an audience - live and/or studio! I'm sure we'd never hear about it. :P

Yea! English, too! :D I've been studying Swedish for years, but I still have difficulty with interpreting it from just LISTENING to it and, though Norwegian and Swedish are quite close in some ways, there are others that keep them apart. I'm so happy to hear it'll be in both Norwegian and English.

It would be great to hear from someone in Scandinavia about this! <3

Getting ready to open it up!

But I have almost no sound!!! uffaa!!

Done! I couldn't hear what was being said (and wouldn't have understood if it wasn't translated anyway)... but it was fun...like watching children open special gifts.... :)

Nice music (what I could hear) at the celebration, too.

It's open! But it doesn't contain any old-timey robots. :-(

I thought it would contain little robots because the box said "for the benefit and delight of future generations."

It looked to me like the dates on the newspapers were 1914 and 1918....but how can this be if it was packaged up and handed to the mayor in 1912? Did I see wrong or ?

Yeah, I thought the curator opening the box said one of the papers was from 1919.

Does anyone on here know where we could find a list of the documents/items that were inside the box? It'd be really interesting to see or read about them! :) <3

Norway's 100-Year-Old Mystery Package Opened: Guess What Was Inside

http://blogs-images.forbes.com/chrisbarth/files/2012/08/Norway2.png

Well, as anticipated, the 100-year-old mystery package opened today in Norway didn’t hold the Blue Star diamond that was lost when the Titanic sunk in 1912. Neither did it contain the big knife or pea suggested as possibilities by Norwegian schoolchildren. What it did contain, however, is a trove of curiae, a slice of history and a healthy dose of delightful anticipation.

Documents from a celebration and a flag from the king and several letters and newspapers from the 1900's.

Plus ledgers and accounts of donations made to construct a memorial to some important battle back in 1612.

Now, what about interest on those deposits? Shouldn't the original small donation account be fairly large today?

Probably gone by now. If it's a debt, banks keep those on their books forever. But give them some money and it disappears quickly - supposedly a 'dead' or inactive account.
