(Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.9 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday and a tsunami warning has been issued for the region, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The quake was centred off the east coast, 91 miles (146 km) off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles (32 km), USGS said.
The tsunami warning was issued for the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific including the U.S. state of Hawaii.
The NOAA Tsunami Center later lifted a warning for Japan, Taiwan and several other Pacific islands.
"Strong earthquake here in Taft, Eastern Samar! And it lasted very long too!" Samar congresman, Ben Evardone, told reporters via text message.
An official at the Philippines' Volcanolgy Institute said he expected damage had been caused in Samar province but he had yet to receive any reports.
"If you are anywhere near the coast I recommend that you head to higher ground," Paul Caruso of the USGS told Sky TV by telephone when asked about a threat of a tsunami hitting the coast of the Philippines.

(CNN) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 has struck off the coast of the Philippines, the U.S. Geological Survey said Friday.
The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Guam and other areas, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the tsunami warning center said.
The quake, which was about 20 miles deep, struck just before 8:50 p.m., the agency said. Its center was about 65 miles southeast of the town of Guiuan, in the Philippine province of East Samar.
Ed Serrano, the head of security at the Marco Polo Hotel in the city of Davao, about 250 miles south of Guiuan, said he felt the ground shake.
"The quake was very strong and the hotel guests were panicking. Most of them went outside," he said. "But now the situation is under control and we are waiting for official reports on how strong the quake was."
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Philippine families rebuild amid further quake fears
2012-09-02 13:24
By Ted Aljibe
General MacArthur, Philippines, Sept 2, 2012 (AFP) -- Families returned to their quake-devastated homes in the central Philippines Sunday, ignoring government warnings to relocate away from danger zones.
Men, women and children picked through the debris in the quiet fishing town of General MacArthur looking for materials to salvage from their splintered wooden houses.
The area faces the Pacific Ocean on the country's eastern seaboard, where a 7.6-magnitude offshore quake struck Friday, triggering a tsunami alert that forced over 130,000 people to flee.
"We thank the Lord that no big waves came, but still, the earthquake destroyed our home," said Rosel Aruera, a 20-year-old mother of two, as she surveyed her the remains of her home.
"It was so strong we were thrown off our bed and minutes later our floor and walls crumbled."
Hers was among 80 seaside homes built on stilts using cement and wood, common structures in many coastal areas across the Philippines.
"We have nowhere else to go, that is why we are trying to rebuild here," she said.
Village chief Amador Evallo said the local government had repeatedly warned people to relocate to safer areas inland.
"All of their houses have been destroyed, and now they are trying to rebuild on the same spot. But what happens when another earthquake or tsunami comes?" he said. "That would be a nightmare."
The quake, which triggered landslides in which one woman died, also sparked tsunami warnings as far away as Indonesia, Japan and Papua New Guinea.
Waves of up to half a metre (20 inches) hit parts of the Philippines' eastern coast but were not high enough to cause any damage.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in Manila said most of the homes destroyed were those made of light materials, while overall damage to infrastructure remained minimal.
But NDRRMC chief Benito Ramos said the quake served as another reminder for many local governments to improve disaster preparedness and relocate entire villages away from danger zones.....
