View Full Version : In praise of the good father

In some parts of the world, today is Father's Day. I would like to acknowledge all those good father's out there, the unsung heroes who do their best to be good male role models for their children, and to be equal partners/supporters/best friends to their children's mother's, who resist anger and impatience, who exude quiet strength, who nurture gently, who can laugh at themselves, and who can wear bad ties with love.

Errm, are you 2 related ???
Thanks for this, fathers get so little recognition. I am a classic example of someone brought up essentially fatherless, I have no idea how to do the job, I just know how NOT to do it ! I have no children of my own, but judging by the profligate way in which young children, wherever I go (especially girls) fall in love with me, I reckon the universe is telling me I should have some !!!

Love the sentiment of the OP, music. I had a lovely dad - I wish I had thanked him more when he was alive.
May I just be a little obstreperous here  and put in a bit of praise for those fathers who do the best that they can to be good - as you say - but who fail in their task because they just don't have the tools, the understanding, the empathy etc etc because of their own upbringing...

A point well made Kathie. Being a parent is easy, it's being a good parent that is hard, and oftern we have not been given the tools by parents who have not been given the tools by parents who have not been given the tools... etc.
Mariposafe, the world is a better place every time an aware and caring person has a child, and who knows what the future will bring you?
