View Full Version : Music that Touches Your Soul

I am sure that everyone has heard music that they really enjoy but every once in a long while you hear a piece of music that really touches something deep inside. Your not sure why it has such an effect but it does. It seems to go beyond the human emotion and speak directly to your soul. Hope that makes sense.
No shame here, no embarrassment just music that takes you someplace special.

It was in that grief
That love came to me!
A voice full of harmony and it says:
'You have to live! I am the life itself!
Your heaven is in my eyes
You're not alone!
I'll collect all your tears!
I'll walk with you and support you!
Smile and hope! I am love!
Are you surrounded by blood and mud?
I am divine! I am oblivion!
I'm the God that descends on Earth
From the Empyrean, I turn Earth
Into heaven!
Ah!
I'm love, I'm love, love

I'll begin with a song and a tv program, believe it or not, that was my only inspiration in a very dark time in my life. It may seem a bit corny, but it helped me to ride through a dark year of the soul.

with the point that all matter is uni-directionally oriented oscillation in perpetuity, is it any wonder that Music is at the very core of all existence? Music, as they say...is written. It has a past, a future..and a now. And all music, no matter it's past or it's future..is enjoyed in it's moment of now. It is a flowing of order, within the organization of chaos and on either side of the given now, is difference. What does it mean to be human? Why do we love music so? Why does it reflect so much expression?
That we are duality beings, here for a short time, at the same time part of us will live on forever, a part bigger than the part that feels it will end? Are we made in...or are we already in some orkish factory, some fiery forge, for the game of machinations for ourselves, or for some other? Running from that blade, constantly, lest we become aware of what we are..or is that running..the entire point, to aid awakening?
Ah yes....Tyrell will explain it to us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjbAgwdBaTI)...
...The Facts of Life:

KATATONIA (Swe) "Gateways Of Bereavement" (1993)
I stand as I cry
Mourning in the silent rain
Death will light my burden
Endless is my sorrow
Gateways so dark
All these years of dying
Gone are dreams of velvet voices
I am you, we were one
Vast are fields I walk
Where sorrow never dies
The sky unites with the blackened rain
Summon with my tears
Now descend on winter wings
My withering soul
Let me die
Gateways of bereavement
A temple of guilt
Falling deep
Embraced in grief
My withering soul
Let me die
Farewell life and all I died for
Now my time is over on Earth
Another journey has begun
Alone I died, not praying for mercy
Nor praying for salvation
A lonely journey in a darkened dream
Time has come to spread my wings
Slow...
Descending from a silent sky
Death comes to take me away
And from the gateways you hear me cry...
...I love you...

I thought today would be a good day, given all the traumatic stuff we've been dealing with on the forum the last few days, to take a time out to reconnect with great music, a.k.a "God" !!
Every once in a while, I come across something that touches my soul, and I just cannot stop watching/listening to it, until I totally burn it out, and even then I come back to it at a later time.
For you blues fans, I don't think anyone should go through life having missed this. It was the Cream reunion concert at Royal Albert Hall in May of 2005. My God these guys are tight. I don't know if anyone has ever done it better. So, it's two hours long. For those who might not know this, you can buy a 3mm-to-RCA adapter for as little as $2.79 and play your laptop or ipod through your home stereo system... no matter how ancient it is....
http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=3mm+to+rca+cable&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=12965455315&hvpos=1t2&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=743249881052344240&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_9dkfzhtmoe_b
Or if it's late and you don't want to disturb your family or the neighbors, the heck with the earbuds, go get yourself these bass-enhancing headphones from Sony, they are awesome!!
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&productId=8198552921666485735&langId=-1&k_clickid=4bae820d-9820-1749-aa94-0000678e053a&XID=O:MDRXB400%2fGRN:dg_gglpla&kpid=8198552921666485735&XID=O:mdrxb400/grn:dg_gglsrch:pla&cagpspn=pla
Now let's get down to it... and if you don't have time or want to listen to it all, at the very least you MUST go to 14:22 of part 1 and listen to "Outside Woman Blues", a remake of Blind Joe Reynolds 1929 song that actually speaks to cheating husbands.... and true to form, Clapton (probably the greatest EVER) comes up with not one but TWO amazing solos.....
Enjoy and God Bless!!

I know music is a personal thing but Freed Fox you and I have very similar tastes.
I've often said that Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" is probably the best album to get busy to of all time.:cheer2:
And I've always considered Sufjan Steven's "Come on feel the Illinoise" one of the greatest unknown albums of all time. :cocktail:
Here is one of my favorite unknown albums of all time.

I love this song very much. Those pure, soaring prose-like lyrics, the fairground-evoking musical rhythm, that powerful piano... ".... high on the wine of life...... high on the wine of life....."
"Man gets tired
spirit don't
man surrenders
spirit won't
man crawls
spirit flies
spirit lives when man dies
man seems
spirit is
man dreams
spirit lives
man is tethered
spirit is free
what spirit is man can be
now we tread the fresh fields,
the higher grounds and the summer slopes
that man may someday climb on
now we tread the fresh fields
the higher ground and the summer slopes
that man may someday climb on
we're on the heels of Rimbaud
we are in the swing
chandelier-like dancing
and we feel everything
high on the wine of life
high on the wine of life
untethered and free
untethered and free
what spirit is man can be."

Too Close to Heaven.
"All your trouble will be over, so will your pain
You are gonna see those blue skies bursting right through the rain
The higher you climb, the lower you fall
You got too close to heaven, that's all
Now in the morning you can cry all you want to
We'll spend the whole day weeping
Right now I want you to lay down your weary head
And let me see you sleeping
You've been walking around baby, inflamed and ashamed
Feeling like you're one inch tall
You got too close to heaven, that's all
You're way too hard on yourself baby
You got some pretty basic things wrong
You wouldn't believe me if I told you why I wrote you into this song
You're looking at your heart baby, and you're calling it black
But like Icarus and like Saul
You got too close to heaven, that's all
Now I know this hurt you're feeling - I've felt these same things too
I've got spaces way down deep inside of me that are just the same as you
You wanna wrap your arms around your head, turn out the lights
And roll yourself into a ball
You got too close to heaven, that's all
Are you blinded by the brilliance?
Are you dazzled by the Light?
Why is it I see nothing but emptiness in your tired beaten eyes
That once were bright
I know you just can't help but run when you hear that sweet voice call
You got too close to heaven, that's all
I walked a mile for you baby
So won't you smile for me baby?"

This is the music that my soul hears over and over again as I move through multiple incarnations desperate to touch your love again.
At the end of every life I hear this same melody as I wait for the warm embrace of death to touch my soul, as I take my last human breath I feel the small tear welling in the corner of my eye.

I'm not sure I am posting this in the right place, as in, I'm not sure it touched my soul.... but it sure as hell touched me to the extent I ended up bawling my eyes out like a child.
My son had learning difficulties, he was slow to speak, to make a sound. He went to school and the 'educators' told me he struggled.
"Thanks". I knew that already (sigh)
I had hoped for more.
One day he came to me and said "Dad, I want you to listen to this." and then added, "It's how I feel sometimes...."
I think you will understand why I ended up crying like a babe.

One hundred percent this song, admittedly the video also makes it perfect to my soul.

I've posted this music video before on the 'Best 3 Songs of your Life' thread.
It not just the song, it's the video for me too. The rotation of Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush is perfectly tuned to the song words.
Also every time Kate Bush gives a hug (eg 2.20 marker onwards), the hug & the song words is so heart felt.

LYRICS
When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender,
this I could not do;
I took my gun and vanished.
I have changed my name so often,
I've lost my wife and children
but I have many friends,
and some of them are with me.
An old woman gave us shelter,
Kept us hidden in the garret,
then the soldiers came;
she died without a whisper.
There were three of us this morning
I'm the only one this evening
but I must go on;
the frontiers are my prison.
Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
through the graves the wind is blowing,
freedom soon will come;
then we'll come from the shadows.

Written during the 1982 Falklands War, "Brothers in Arms" deals with the senselessness of war. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the war, Knopfler recorded a new version of the song at Abbey Road Studios to raise funds for British veterans who he said "are still suffering from the effects of that conflict"
Lyrics:
These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Someday you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn to be
Brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged high
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the sun's gone to hell and
The moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms
