Hi - I was in an office and about 15 minutes ago (it is now 8:55 AM local time) - I just experienced the biggest quake experience I have ever had - note in the link above it states this quake occurred off the coast which implies to me pretty far. Perhaps there could be tsunami warnings.

The quake (as experienced here) in San Jose lasted a good 30 - 40 seconds. It was clear at the beginning it was a quake. I sat quietly so I could judge how much it was ramping up. At about 15 seconds it seemed to escalate. I recall my mind wondering if it might ramp up further. At about 20 - 25 seconds I could feel additional shakes but not any more significant than the big one at around 15 seconds in... at least I knew it was not getting worse. By about 35 seconds or so it slowed and then stopped probably around 45 seconds after it started.

Related (but only in a personal way) - directly because of the growth I have been able to achieve these last several months ALL because of my membership and participation in the Project Avalon forum, I was able to remain relatively calm and in fact immediately jumped into the how I could help mode.

The building was being evacuated and I held a door to our office (that automatically locks) open so folks could get out. I saw a young lady being carried out by a big guy (she clearly passed out... she is OK now). I was confident the building withstood the event. I only left when told everyone was out and had to leave. I re-entered 5 minutes later so I could post about this and get back to work!

Life is a ride... sometimes a pretty spooky one, but just a ride (my view of the day).

EDIT: now they are saying it was on land - 140 km west of San Jose - downgraded to a 7.6

and just had a mild aftershock - I am not exactly very experienced at this but I would bet that first one was the big one and anything after will be less significant. (now back to WORK! not exactly the easiest thing to focus on at the moment but must pay the bills and the MAN)

Thanks for the late breaking news justoneman :).

Here's a screenshot from http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ showing it:

Thanks, Justoneman, for the testimonial. You're a good man!

Very glad to hear that those near you and yourself are ok.

There is a Tsunami warning for the Carribean islands nearby. I posted it on the bot thread.

I called my husband as soon as I saw this post. He says it was very long, but very smooth, no damage. He will call relatives in other parts of the country now.
There is a forum called CostaRicaLiving...a Yahoo group...lots of members, and in English...
I will check with them, as they are sprinkled all over the country and the reports come in instantly.

Our automatic USGS feed has also reported this, in the thread M 7.9, off the coast of Costa Rica (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?49460-M-7.9-off-the-coast-of-Costa-Rica).

glad to hear another big one hit with very few injuries...

Hey Ulli, how's my cabin?

the energy hit us yesterday from the CME wave, it was up over 15 again... click charts in my sig below to look at the wave and the field that shows impacts.

I posted already in the Here and Now thread that our valley is fine....life goes on as normal. It was a long and smooth quake.
We live beside a mountain river and the rocks of the riverbed are underneath our home and absorb all earth tremors.
Yet one mile further away people experienced the quake as extremely strong.

Here is the Yahoo group where Americans living in Costa Rica are discussing the event, in case anyone is interested.

Rocky: quit that line of thinking or else you'll end up stating that the whole of the Pacific Ring of Fire is on the same "fault zone," i.e. the "same" subduction zone.

However, both California and New Zealand are located on top of "Transform Fault zone" translating motions from one subduction zone to another.

I am happy everything is fine Ulli and Justoneman.

Just read on the TV that tsunami warning for central america is now off. So this is a good news.

you might be misunderstanding what I am saying, if you look at the red lines on this map, it shows the faultline, now switch to a Satallite map and look again, you'll see a tear where over millions of years, quakes have split the crust...

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Maps/region/N_America.gif

that line goes straight up to Alaska. when I said I wasn't worried about the California Frack Quakes, I was worried about Mexico is because the energy was hitting there...

Last night I was reading up on the city of David in Panama, I'm drawn to what is coming, I prayed for central America last night, because I had a feeling something big was coming when I saw the energy map way up in the red as it passed over...

the quakes followed, I'm getting pretty good at predicting quakes from the energy slamming us from the sun... maybe that prayer got the big guy watching, very few injuries for a quake that size...

but, I am curious about how New Zealand and California are connected...

... or I may not: Rocky, if you insist on posting on a subject, at least, learn the basic terminology!

The "red line" you refer to constitutes the eastern portion of the Pacific Ring of Fire, here is what it is made of:

I never claimed to be an expert, but try and share in a language everyone understands, even Geology.com ;)

I depend on my friends here at Avalon to help readers with details of what I am sharing which is exactly what you did... those that have followed me for years know my quirks by now...

so, ummm... THANKS!!!

So, when you write: "right on the same fault line as California..." what do you think most people conjure up in their Mind?

Rocky_Shorz
6th September 2012, 04:52
95% of world quakes happen on faultlines...

here is 100 years...

http://sciencewise.anu.edu.au/article_image_big/1064/Picture%204.jpg

many here on Avalon have seen the military insider that said they are evacuating family from the coast of California because of a possible Quake Tsunami...

so what do I think most people think?

HOLY Crapola!!!

but here at Avalon, we teach keeping the excitement under control...

so we just whisper, ruh roh!!! and keep our eyes open... ;)
