Just thought I would post an interesting / funny story that seems to speak to the interesting dynamics we see play out in society on a daily basis regarding ufology.
Saturday I was at the Exeter NH UFO festival. Great speakers etc. I was outside with a woman when she says "hey what is that in the sky!" I look and see a plane to my east and she points to the Northwest and says no there.
I look and see a white round object and observe it for 2-3 Minutes watching it move to the left and then far to the right. Initially I said I thought it was a balloon but it was so far away I Could not see.
The woman I was with decided to go into the hall where lectures were and get people. She comes out with about 20 people all looking at the sky. After watching for about 7 minutes, I notice the white circle moved a considerable distance but in no way showed any intelligent control. All the while I am saying, it appears to be a balloon but I have never seen a simple balloon stay in the area the way this one was.
A few minutes later the crowd of people leaves and I am told someone used a real high end camera and zoomed in and found that it was in fact a weather balloon and allegedly there was a letter or note on the bottom of it hanging from a string.
This leads me to the following hypothesis and observations:
1) People do not usually over react, especially when it comes to seeing an unknown object at a UFO convention. Everyone was observant, non judgmental and no one claimed it was a UFO or alien craft.
2) Seeing how I have never seen a weather balloon before and one is within miles away from a planned UFO convention with an alleged "note" at the bottom, one can assume it was planned specifically for this event. If that is true they FAILED to rouse mass attention and proved that in our case, people do not over react or see things that are not there.
I thought people would find this interesting as today this is played out on a larger scale with society. A micro example like this sometimes shows us where we stand as a society.
