"Batten down the hatches, the zombies are coming - at least according to the government.
In a bizarre public health campaign, the Homeland Security Department has warned Americans to prepare for a zombie apocalypse, in a bid to encourage better preparation for genuine disasters and emergencies.
To get ready for the living dead, they urge citizens to stock up on food, batteries and water, and to keep a spare change of clothes and medication on hand."

Tens of thousands of fish and seagulls have washed up dead on the shores of one of the world's biggest lakes and scientists are at a loss to explain why.
The lifeless bodies of the freshwater fish and seagulls were discovered spread along a 25-mile stretch of Canadian shoreline by Lake Eerie which stretches between Canada and the U.S.
The rotting corpses gave off a stench which locals described as unbearable at times.

Experts from the Ontario Ministries of the Environment in Canada are now conducting tests to try and identify the cause of the mass kill-off.
Samples of the fish carcasses were sent to labs for analysis where scientists are looking for pH levels changes and any evidence of algae saturation.
It is not yet clear whether the birds died as a result of eating the dead fish, or whether there was some other cause.

Evidently there WAS a memo. In August, 2011, there was a Presidential Proclamation naming September National Preparedness Month. So, this is the second year of same. Now, from the CDC: Throughout September there will be activities across the country to promote emergency preparedness. More than 3,000 organizations – national, regional, and local public and private organizations – are supporting emergency preparedness efforts and encouraging all Americans to take action.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/09/07/government-zombie-promos-are-spreading/
"The government’s zombie apocalypse is spreading and could come to an emergency-management center near you.
A few weeks before the government’s Zombie Awareness Month in October, FEMA’s monthly webinar Thursday discussed the success of the Centers for Disease Control’s zombie-preparedness campaign and how other centers can use pop culture references – even fictitious ones like the walking dead – to promote gearing up for real disasters.
Almost 400 emergency-management professionals tuned in nationwide, according to an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“Zombie-preparedness messages and activities have proven to be an effective way of engaging new audiences, particularly young people who are not familiar with what to do before, during or after a disaster,” Danta Randazzo of FEMA’s individual and community preparedness division said during the webinar. “It’s also a great way to grab attention and increase interest in general.”
well, i can say that if they haven't said very much about it in the past, they are talking about it now.
