DOCUMENTARY: FAT, SICK AND NEARLY DEAD

My diet has taken a profound change over the last 4 weeks. During this time a friend recommended a really good documentary which has left some long lasting effects. This has been making its way around the traps for quite some time now, I thought I'd bring it to a wider audience for those who have yet to come across it. Great for those looking to drop a few kilos and for anyone and who values their health and well-being.

Synopsis: It's a really informative and practical documentary about an Australian man (Joe Cross) who substitutes many years of questionable eating habits to a regimen of purely fruits and vegetables, delivered via a juicing machine. Highly inspiring stuff.

Enjoy

My mom has asked me to watch this a couple times, she even fed me some dark liquid concoction while I was down in Oregon recently (it wasn't too bad!) I think I'm convinced from teh various people I know that have been "juicing" that I will try this very soon, perhaps the full 30 day "juice fast"

In a juicing diet you iss out on the phytochemicals and fibers. Food is intended to be chewed, not gulped quickly. Blending with a blendtech may be a better solution than juicing

because the amount of veggies he puts into one "juice" would be impossible to eat 4x a day.... he is "super charging" his immune system.

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead is an inspiring doco.

I personally have zero interest in juicing all my food, but I can see how it could be of benefit as a stepping stone for someone having trouble transitioning from SAD (Standard American/Australian Diet) to Paleo/Primal.

Well then you toss in some pulp from the fruit/veggies you just juiced, problem solved, it works, i know i do it.

I started doing this Juicing diet last summer, (Australian summer) and it was really good-I got a bit jaded cleaning the Juicer all the time,
but it started me off losing the worst of excess weight-Definitely a good move-going to start up again shortly.
Great documentary, inspiring.

Hello Everyone:
The juicing experience gets old very, very fast when you have to clean up a big juicer. The solution that I have found is to take the work out of it. I'm not promoting any products just simply stating the one I use which seems to do an excellent job. This way you get to keep the pulp which you don't get in the juicing machines.
Here is a picture on Amazon strictly for reference only.

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Bullet-Express-17-Piece-High-Speed/dp/B000AEZVRS

If you check around they come with different options but the glasses that you just fill with fruit, vegetables etc. ,then screw the blender botton to the glass. Put the glass on the motor to blend and it's done that fast! My big juicer sits on the counter collecting dust since using it takes about 1/2 hour of cleaning instead of 1-2 minutes maximum.

Whatever you use have fun and enjoy. There's so many ways to make it easy now days to stay healthy.

Supplementing my normal diet with the Joe Cross recipe for "Mean Green Juice" is a good way for me to add healthy raw green vegetables. Kale is the most nutrient dense food on the planet, twice the nutrition of spinach, I've read on the web.

I am not planning to go on a Mean Green fast for any length of time. Some people like the Mean Green taste. For me it is just OK. I try to drink 1/2 quart each day.

Here is the recipe for Mean Green juice:

I green juice every morning Its amazing
I was using a blender and yes it's a drag to clean

I found a great solution though - a stick mixer
Mine even has a detachable end so it's even easier to
clean ... Down side is you have to chop things a little bit
first to make ilt easier ... And pulp wise , well you have a
choice how course or how fine you blend
You can aslo add in some psyllium for extra fibre if that's an
issue but you don't really need to

One way to take this to a whole new level is to grow your
own greens it increases your vibration out of sight to eat food
that fresh and that clean

From what I hear the key is an easy to clean juicer (which I will spend some time today looking for), my mom has the one featured in this docu & seems fairly happy with it ( It only has like something like 3 pieces to it).

& if you don't use the fiber it's excellent for compost for your garden ( supercharge your soil!)

I've had one of the Omega 8000 series juicers for a year or two - excellent and quick to clean.

Though if I were in the market now for a juicer, I'd seriously consider their VRT330 vertical juicer instead. The VRT is apparently easier to clean, but less versatile. Compare them in this video: Juicing Wheatgrass in the Omega VRT 330 vs the Omega 8005 8006 Juice Off (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9rchPqw2Z1g#!).

I've been using an Omega 8003 for about 6 years now, and am very satisfied with it.

For cleanup, I just throw all the parts into a sinkful of hot, soapy water and let soak for awhile, then some quick swipes with a bottle brush does the rest.
Occasionally I soak the parts in some water with bleach to remove stains.

Two good reason for juicing:
One is that for many people, myself included since I have TMJ and wear dentures now, chewing an adequate amount of fresh fruit and vegies every day would be impossible and very painful if I were to try.
I can get all the nutrition I need from drinking fresh juice (and it's not that difficult to take in the required amount of fiber).

The second reason has to do with the fact that much of the energy that the body uses every day goes to the digestion process.
When you drink juice, much less energy for digestion is required, and the body is able to devote that saved energy to healing, cleansing or other action.

Another very beneficial addition to the diet is sprouted and fermented foods, which are much higher in nutritional content than in raw or cooked form, and in sprouted or formented form, foods are also much easier to digest and utilize, thus saving energy.

Excellent suggestion, this was the model I found through my research as well.

ended up with this today:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/zTargeTz/IMG_1405.jpg

for simplicity we started with the "mean green" recipe (http://myjuicecleanse.com/juicer-recipes/mean-green-juice-recipes/ )
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/zTargeTz/IMG_1406.jpg

And it's very palatable, very "fresh" tasting and filling..

as for the juicer, we went with the Omega VRT350HD (Paul mentioned above, here's a good review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj4rgiswdjI )

it worked just as advertised, I did pack a little too much kale in at one point but it was easily corrected & clean up took less than 2 min, it juices a bit slower than some of the high RPM versions but that was the biggest selling point for this one, its low speed so it doesn't heat the liquid & there are no great centrifugal forces separating everything so the juice does not separate & is very consistent. I'm going to get comfortable with different combo's of fruit and veggies and try to find a decent way to get them in larger quantities (tough in Alaska) before I start a fast, I'll definitely be supplementing meals until I'm ready however.

great movie and so inspiring.......expensive I would imagine though, especially if you wanted to go organic.......his pricing I am sure will be low with the coming season of fruit and veggies this year being more expensive due to the bad summer in many areas......still, you can't really put a price on health can you.....and the feel good energy

I watched several months ago and it inspired me to try juicing. I kept it up for about 2 weeks (though I ate healthy whole food also, not just veggie/fruit juice alone) and I must say that I really felt better in ways that are hard to describe. I noticed I had a lot more energy and my hip and knee stopped hurting and I could run again like a kid! Unfortunately, fresh organic veggies are very expensive and juicing is a very messy job. I still do it on occasion, but I would like to get a better juicer. I hated throwing the pulp away so i often would mix it with a couple of eggs and seasonings and fry them as patties topped with some sort of sauce and eat it. I found it to be very tasty!

Pulp uses are interesting to me, I thought last night that I could flatten some on a cooking sheet, cut it into chip sized pieces & salt it for a crunchy snack.. (maybe mix a bit of egg in for consistancy) or make dog treats the same way..

anyone know good uses?

the interwebs has a few pages on this topic:

I ended up with a lot of fiber after making 3 sets of "mean green" yesterday, I imagine there will be large quantities as I continue this.

everything works perfect with the juicer I purchased except celery seems to be a bit tough for it to process (i'll try to chop it up before hand, its the long fibers that are the issue), other than that I think I've "eaten" more veggies in the last two days then I had in the previous 6 months.

I've been supplementing with grass fed T bones ;)

In a juicing diet you iss out on the phytochemicals and fibers. Food is intended to be chewed, not gulped quickly. Blending with a blendtech may be a better solution than juicing

Presses and slow juicers help with that. The phytonutrients will be in the juice - so not much to worry about there, and with a slow juicer you can use a coarse filter to still get the fiber or with a press you can decide how much fibrer to filter out. I like these two methods because they also help keep the oxygen out -- a blend tech would very much oxidize your juice. A slow juicer is a bit like a press but uses a rotational crushing type of method.

I've been drinking about 32 oz a day since I got my juicer; I think thats a bit higher than most people "supplement" but it goes down so easy!!

I think I'm about ready to start a juice fast, haven't done it yet though I have gone quite a few days with just one "solid meal" and the rest juice,... I've done a couple of days 'all juice' I ended up drinking probably 120oz of juice those two days. (Which is a LOT of veggies...) I wasn't ever really hungry on those days as I had so much juice to drink... haha.

I'm using a slow speed juicer so I will make enough for two days worth then do it again when I run out (not sure if this is correct or not, probably best to let the juice sit in the plant as long as possible)

I've noticed a few small things (I got a cold sore in my mouth & it went away in less than a day, this is not typical for me, they are usually present for 3-4 days; slightly elevated energy levels), but I'm a high tolerance ( or low sensitivity as I like to put it) type of person so I haven't really noticed any huge changes (perhaps a juice fast will change that).

the nice thing about buying a new juicer is the price alone has kept me juicing (I'm bad at starting something then quitting after a while...like Urine therapy).. haha; plus it's really convenient at work & has replaced all my caffeine / "lonely hand" drinks.

All I know is what I read ... in my own prior posting :), and what I can find with a quick Google search.

The VRT's are apparently easier to clean, according to that video. VRT 330 is white; VRT 350 is black and silver.

According to the video Omega VRT350 HD vs Omega VRT330 Juicer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwtOikA6ieM), the VRT 350 also has a heavier duty screen. According to this other video All New Omega VRT330 HD compared to the Omega VRT350 HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fv4T1tX2cgw), you can also get a Omega VRT 330 HD juicer, which is the white 330 with the heavy duty (HD) screen that was originally released in the 350.

Sure - go for it - there is much redundancy on the forum, as people find different ways to present and discuss some complex and evolving material from various perspectives.

there was a successful businessman from Australia, who because of his success was indulgent in eating. he grew to an unsafe weight and suffered from multiple maladies. he decided to turn his life around by fasting using a juicer for 60 days. this is his story. he went to the U.S. to begin this adventure. it is free to watch on Hulu and is also on Netflix. I recently began juicing out of necessity and so found this to be very interesting as well as entertaining. (i do realize that as humans we don't require entertainment :nono:)

My husband and I have been juicing off and on for a month and just started a complete fast a few days ago after watching "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead". Because we have been - fat, sick and nearly dead! Anyway, I wanted to add to the thread that we are using the Montel Williams Health Master. Although it seems to have gotten some bad reviews for leaking, it works wonderfully for us. The best thing about this is it is actually a super powerful blender (like the Vitamix) so we don't loose any fiber or pulp. We can put a whole apple or even a beet in there and it is completely smooth. It will even heat up vegetables to make soup if left running for 8 minutes. It will even cook a potato in that time. We love it, use it two or three times a day with zero problems and super easy clean up.

I have done a juice fast and I liked it. I had to stop because of travel but I still juice regularly. I just don't fast. I have a breville, which I love. I find it quite easy to clean. I just scrape all the pulp into the trash with a spatula, and rinse the pieces well and let it dry. Once in a while I put it in the dishwasher to shine it up. I also do a lot of smoothies. Dr. Fuhrman says to eat 3 fruits a day so I get them all at once in my smoothie, then in the afternoon I do a green juice. I never feel better than when I get both drinks in a day.

Hi Target......sorry to hear the produce is hard to get there, I know you were hoping for a big improvement from Alaska.

I have been juicing breakfasts since October......have had periods where I was doing nothing but juicing...for say 21 days.......but over the winter, i got down to 2 juices a day, and food.......unfortunately this is not doing a thing for my weight, although somehow my husband has dropped at least 25 pounds!! I think I may have found it........this week I began Monday with the intention of a juice fast for as long as I could .....hoping for 5 weeks.....ha! by day two I was eating ......I am feeling rather like a big failure, and the pressure to lose weight (from myself) seems to be working against me.

Serendipity.....I was under the impression that a juicer that heats up your veggies as it juices is not a good idea.....depletes some of the nutrients you are trying to extract. I would be suspicious of a juicer than can cook anything.

My Omega is very easy to clean but I do find I have to chop things a lot more than I thought I would......I see Joe Cross posing with full stalks of celery going into his Breville......not sure is this accurate or just for the photo.....I have a lot of issues with Kale and celery clogging up the machine but generally its fine, if I chop them up.

Men have testosterone on our side, so it's a bit unfair when it comes to weight loss/ muscle mass retention (and muscle mass is what really keeps weight off, since it uses more calories just by exsisting).

My juicer is very much the same, on the fiberous materials I need to chop them into 1" sections before feeding them through or I get clogging.

Hi Earth Angel. I too have an omega, (have had it only for a little over a month or so). Love it, but like you said lots of cutting. I have found, when leafy greens start to clog things, stick a carrot or two in, and it will push the lighter stuff on through. So far, this has worked every time for me.

I am with you, that it is frustrating, the weight loss thing. I think my primary issue is digestion. I reap great benefits, as long as I am not eating much. Juicing dies fill me up most of the time, but once I cheat, or eat something I KNOW i shouldn't, then it takes me a week to over come the craving. Probably due to yeast and lack of enzymes.

But as long as we don't give up, thats important. Remember, we are human, and we are not perfect. Regardless of weight, loss or gained, we are still feeding our body with good things while juicing.

Here is an excellent source of information about juicing. Enjoy

I had a hard time with hunger when I was trying to fast. I found that eating just one or two wheat thins or triscuits with the juice satisfied me and the hunger was not such a problem. I have to add that for the most part I can stick big things in my breville and it juices them with little to no problem. once in a while something gets stuck but that isn't due to size anyway.

they recommend your daily juicing be 20% fruit and 80% veg
I like to add a green apple and some lemon to most veggie drinks to sweeten it up......Pineapple is also great to add or watermelon, melons......pears!
I also strain my juices as I don't like the pulpy texture in a drink.....
ABC is easy and tasty....... 1 Apple, 1 Beet, 2 Carrots, and I add a slice of lemon to this as well.
here is a site you can join or just read recipes on, from Joe Cross of Fat Sick and Nearly Dead......its called Reboot Your Life
