I haven't been on the board lately... I have a really full load of classes/job right now.

I don't know where this would belong ... so I started a new 'issue-topic" that I hope will turn into a continuous survey of where/when the police are stepping up any monitorings or activities.

Just to gauge the increased crack-downs of the police(s)... *(and what we can do for counter-measures)

got this notice in my college mailbox just today (9/12/2012)
-------------
WARNING!

Dear Norfolk Campus student:
Cross all streets using the appropriately-identified crosswalks, especially on Granby Street and Monticello Avenue.

Norfolk Police Department has stepped up its enforcement of the Pedestrian Safety Program: Failure to use the appropriately-identified crosswalks will result in a citation for code violation which may result in a fine.

Again, please take time to use the crosswalks.

I can see it now...

"DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND THE TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION
WILL BE DETAINING ANYONE (ESPECIALLY COLLEGE STUDENTS) FOR VOILATING THE PSP (PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROGRAM)
ALSO KNOW AS 'JAYWALKING' AND WILL BE DESIGNATED AS TERRORISTS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE"

Far cry?

thats nothing new! they do that here in Australia all the time.

But they are sneaky about it! In the city, up the top of the mall is a street. where the mall and this street pass there are two pedestrian crossings. they are only there to allow people to cross, no other traffic can go thru there.

The police will hide behind a garden bed near this crossing and watch it. When they see someone Jwalk they'll run out and fine them.

Unless its peak morning/evening its pretty dang safe to cross there, if you look both ways and have common sense. The only time that area is dangerous for people is friday/saturday nights when alcohol filled people decide they should be ok to cross it.

But you will NEVER, EVER see the police there waiting to fine people for Jwalking when it is dangerous.

Pedestrian safety laws are encouraged and pushed for by people who have lost loved ones in traffic incidents. After their loss, they become very active in pushing for these safety laws within their local counties, especially at the intersection where their loved one was lost. Its not from police trying to give you more tickets and bully you, though that can and probably will occur from these laws of course.
