View Full Version : Avaaz Call to Action Re: Trans Pacific Partnership
Fellow Aspirant
13th September 2012, 01:01
Here's the message from Avaaz, complete with a link to the site:
Dear friends,
We have four days to stop a top-secret global corporate power grab that attacks everything from a free Internet to environmental protections. This agreement is being negotiated right now by bureaucrats backed by corporate lobbyists. Click below to crash their secret meeting with our global call to kill the TPP deal:
Sign the petition
Details are leaking of a top-secret, global corporate power grab of breathtaking scope -- attacking everything from a free Internet to health and environmental regulations, and we have just 4 days to stop it.
Big business has a new plan to fatten their pockets: a giant global pact, with an international tribunal to enforce it, that is kept top secret for years (even from our lawmakers!) and then brought down like a Death Star on our democracies. Big Tobacco, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Walmart and almost 600 other corporate lobbyists are all in on the draft -- including limits on smoking laws, affordable medicines and free speech on the Net.
The latest round of negotiations ends in just 4 days -- but outcries in each of our countries could shake the confidence of negotiators and scuttle the talks forever. Let's get to a million against the global corporate takeover. Sign below and forward widely. Avaaz will project our petition counter on the walls of the conference so negotiators can see the opposition to their plan exploding in real time:

BACKGROUND
GetUp! is an Australian political organisation that campaigns on issues important to its members. It was launched in August 2005, the week that the Coalition took control of the Australian Senate.
GetUp campaigns are community based, and are primarily coordinated through the Internet. They involve email, its website, and traditional media. GetUp is a non-profit organisation, and states that it relies on donations from individuals, organisations, unions and community groups for funding.[2]
GetUp describes itself as "a new independent political movement to build a progressive Australia".[3] They identify campaigns based on the interests of its members, which are usually issues such as "social justice, economic fairness and environmental sustainability".[4]
HISTORY
Founded by Jeremy Heimans and David Madden, the GetUp.org.au website was launched on 1 August 2005 along with a television advertising campaign. Inspired by the American website MoveOn.org.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/GetUp!
WHO ARE Jeremy Heimans and David Madden?
David Madden is an Australian entrepreneur associated with progressive causes. He is a co-founder of GetUp! a web-based political movement, and Avaaz.org, a global advocacy movement.
Madden grew up in Canberra and served as an Army officer before studying Arts and Law at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Madden served as president of the University of New South Wales Student Guild after defeating the Labor Left candidate in a landslide.
After winning the University Medal in History, Madden was awarded Fulbright and Frank Knox scholarships to study at Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in law and completed his master's degree in public policies.
Madden has worked for the World Bank in Timor Leste, and for the United Nations in Indonesia. He is the co-author of Imagining Australia: Ideas for Our Future (Allen & Unwin, 2004).
In 2004, Madden was one of the founders of Win Back Respect, a web-based campaign against the foreign policy of United States President George W. Bush. The following year, together with Jeremy Heimans, he co-founded GetUp!, a similar campaign against the recently re-elected Howard government in Australia. Madden and Heimans subsequently co-founded Avaaz.org.
In 2006 Madden and Heimans were named one of the "Top 10 People who are Changing the World of Politics and the Internet" by Politics Online and the World E-Government Forum.

WHAT IS Avaaz.org?
Avaaz.org is an international left-wing civic organization established in January 2007[1] that promotes activism on issues such as climate change, human rights, and religious conflicts.[2] Its stated mission is to "ensure that the views and values of the world's people inform global decision-making." The organization operates in thirteen languages, and claims to have more than eight million members in 193 countries.
The name Avaaz (Persian: آواز)(Devanagari:आवाज ) was derived from the Persian/Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi/Marathi word for 'voice'. Avaaz.org was co-founded by ResPublica, an American community of public sector professionals dedicated to promoting good governance, civic virtue and deliberative democracy, and MoveOn.org, an American non-profit progressive public policy advocacy group and political action committee. The organization was also supported by Service Employees International Union, a founding partner, and GetUp.org.au. Avaaz's individual co-founders include Executive Director Ricken Patel (a Canadian citizen living in New York),[4] Virginia congressman Tom Perriello, Australian progressive entrepreneur David Madden, Jeremy Heimans (co-founders of Purpose.com), Andrea Woodhouse, Tom Pravda, and MoveOn Executive Director Eli Pariser.[5]
ACTIVITIES
Avaaz is managed by a team of campaigners working from Switzerland, Brazil, the United States, Argentina, and the United Kingdom. They communicate with members via email, and employ campaigning tactics including online public petitions, videos, and email-your-leader tools.
Purpose, a for-profit company, states on its web site that "Purpose creates 21st century movements. (Agenda 21) We look for ways that movements can help solve major global problems. To do this, we work with some of the most exciting players in the new green and social economy to help them get to scale faster and some of the world's biggest brands to mobilize their consumers for significant social impact," and goes on to say that its principals co-founded Avaaz.[11]
At the 2007 G8 conference, Avaaz.org protested against the "U.S. administration [for its] 'wrecking tactics' and failure to agree to specific, binding global goals" when it came to the mitigation of global warming.

WHAT & WHO are MoveOn.org?
MoveOn.org is an American non-profit, progressive[1] or liberal[2][3] public policy advocacy group and political action committee, which has raised millions of dollars for candidates it identifies as "moderates" or "progressives" in the United States.
MoveOn.org Financial contributors
According to an article in the Washington Post dated March 10, 2004:
"The Democratic 527 organizations have drawn support from some wealthy liberals determined to defeat Bush. They include financier George Soros who gave $1.46 million to MoveOn.org Voter Fund (in the form of matching funds to recruit additional small donors); Peter B. Lewis, chief executive of the Progressive Corp., who gave $500,000 to MoveOn.org Voter Fund; and Linda Pritzker, of the Hyatt hotel family, and her Sustainable World Corp., who gave $4 million to the joint fundraising committee."

TPP is totally freightening -I researched that there will be "Courts"companies and use against countries & a countries' laws won't apply to the corporations. Its a suicide-pact among nations. But we all know it will be signed. Petitions are pointless and will be ignored.

So, if what you say is true, Jacovesk, i.e. "Avaaz is the ENEMY - The Worst of Worst because they operate behind a Veil of LIES & Secrecy and are as NWO as the Henry Kissinger/George Soros types. Period..!"
then the whole Trans Pacific Partnership project is a GOOD thing. That can't possibly be true. I've done enough research on the TPP to know that it is just as pernicious as AVAAZ portrays it. So why would you tear down an organization that opposes it? Are you in favour of the TPP? That would make you worse than the worst of the worst ... gets kinda confusing, no?
I have been part of many of AVAAZ's campaigns, all of which I found to be morally and ethically sound. The organization's track record speaks for itself; I judge the truth of people by their actions. If you can find another organization that takes stands against oppression and injustice like AVAAZ does, I'd be glad to hear of it. Till then, please spare me the benefit of your righteous indignation - it sounds dangerously similar to paranoid disinformation.

Fellow Aspirant - I am with you regarding Avaaz. I think they do an impressive job. A man I vaguely know recently tried to persuade me that Avaaz was not 'real campaigning' - that anyone can sign a petition on the internet without making an effort. My response was that by using organisations like Avaaz I can support many vital campaigns not just the few I would be able to support if I had to protest physically. Some petitions are ignored and so are protests - remember the millions around the world who marched against the war on Iraq? However, some do work even if it is just to slow the process down.

Just because someone is left of the political spectrum does not immediately make them part of the NWO team. Left and right wing politics represent the opposing poles of a Hegelian dialect (thesis + antithesis = synthesis) which lead to the imposition of the "International Socialism" of one world government, as first trialed in Nazi Germany under the less inclusive umbrella "National Socialism". So Capitalism + Communism = International Socialism, and the politics of the NWO are based on the turmoil caused by polarity in politics. We should try to be less polar in all things, because polarity furthers the NWO agenda.

Jackovesk, the info still says nothing about secrecy and lies. They seem to be very open about who is funding them and what their agenda is. You have provided no proof of any secrets or any lies, no examples of secrecy and lies, or have anything to offer as a realistic proven hypothesis that their agenda is not what they say it is.
I think that you personally do not like their agenda, and you personally do not trust them because of who funds the organisation. But there is a big leap between personally not liking the causes an organisation supports/not trusting those who fund the organisation and accusing the organisation of secrecy and lies, especially when you cannot provide one shred of evidence.
You have a right to express your opinion, so, in order to be heard and listened to, you don't have to go overboard with big bold words in various colours (although the use of colour is creative and I do appreciate that), dramatic unsubstantiated statements, and accusations of stupidity and inability to read or deliberate chosen ignorance whenever someone asks you to back up your dramatic statements with facts.
Personally, I support some of the campaigns run by Avaaz, and others I don't. I think most people view Avaaz in the same way. As long as Avaaz run campaigns that resonate with people, they will get support. (And, by the way, Avaaz does send out questionnaires so anyone can indicate what issues they support and which they don't. Plus anyone can start their own campaign using the Avaaz platform and resources.)

BACKGROUND
GetUp! is an Australian political organisation that campaigns on issues important to its members.

Now lets 'Break this Down' even further for those who can't read or are simply (TOO LAZY) to see  the 'Truth' when its been painstakingly laid out in front of them for (ALL) to see...:faint:
I think that you personally do not like their agenda, and you personally do not trust them because of who funds the organisation. But there is a big leap between personally not liking the causes an organisation supports/not trusting those who fund the organisation and accusing the organisation of secrecy and lies, especially when you cannot provide one shred of evidence.
Summary: (You just could'nt be bothered getting into the detail could you sdv..!!!!!!!!!!!!
All 3 Organisations Avaaz.org - Moveon.org - GetUp.org were setup by the same people
Soros is a major contributor to Moveon.org

Get Up! funded with union's $1m gift
November 13, 2010
THE advocacy group GetUp! accepted a record $1.12 million donation from a large union just before the federal election, at the same time supporting a ban on political donations from unions and business.
The donation from the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union funded a prominent TV advertisement that attacked the Liberal leader Tony Abbott's ''archaic'' views on women and social issues in the days before the election in August.
It went to air as a GetUp! advertisement with no reference to being largely funded by a big Labor-affiliated union.
The high-profile group, which says it has more than 300,000 members, pursues issues such as climate change and refugees.
Advertisement Its successful High Court challenge before the election enabled tens of thousands of young people to vote.
But its willingness to take such a large donation, of the type it wants banned, has led to claims it has been hypocritical.
The opposition leader in the Senate, Eric Abetz, said the donation showed GetUp! was nothing more than a Labor front and the advertising could have changed the election result.
''It's clear there is a strong relationship between the unions and GetUp! and the Labor Party campaign,'' he said.
''With that sort of money the CFMEU could have run and authorised their own advertisement but they deliberately got GetUp! to do that as a third party so the odium of the CFMEU wouldn't be associated with the advertising campaign.''
Since 2008 GetUp! has been campaigning to stop unions and businesses donating to political parties. It says only individuals should be allowed to donate, capped at $1000 a year. It has nearly reached its target of 50,000 names on a petition on the issue.
The petition reads. ''Tell the government to get corporate and third-party influence out of politics and end all large-scale political donations.
''Our democracy should not be for sale but right now the people we elect to govern us take money from those who stand to gain from government policy and contracts.''
GetUp! bills itself as ''an independent, grassroots community advocacy organisation'' and says it received no money from political parties or government.
Its acting national director, Sam McLean, rejected the claims of hypocrisy. ''We had a good think about whether we wanted to [accept the money] but in the end decided that we'd already made the ad. It was not like anyone was giving us a cheque and asking us to run a campaign. It was something we already believed in and had on air.''
He said the group would be happy for future legislation to ban the type of donation, which he said came from the construction division of the union.
''In the meantime we go above and beyond our current legal obligations,'' he said.
GetUp! disclosed the donation on its website earlier than required to under law. The group said it received the donation on August 13, eight days before the election. The Australian Electoral Commission will not publish it until February 2012.
Mr McLean said the $1.12 million was used to fund an advertisement that was already on air, for which members had donated about $350,000.
The union contribution is nearly 10 times the size of any donation disclosed since it was founded in 2005.

Dear Jackovesk
Still not one example of a lie or secrecy.
By the way, the climate action campaign was about saving the Kyoto Protocol, and not about carbon tax.
I have counted at least three very rude personal insults, so far from now on I am going to ignore your posts and not engage with the issues that you discuss here on PA.
Best wishes and go well.
