I'm posting this article not to provoke debate or argument but more to bring to our attention some of the more obscure names that may be new to some of us.

I'm sure to many of us Avlonians we can come up with a vastly different list and order of merit, because even I can see at least a dozen names are missing from it, but for now it's interesting to see what the "Masses Media" thinks it should be.

Watkins’ Spiritual 100 List for 2012

100 Most Spiritually Influential Living people

I'll reprint the first 10 from the list here, just for starters

1. Dalai Lama

2. Eckhart Tolle

3. Thich Nhat Hanh

4. Deepak Chopra

5. Paulo Coelho

6. Elizabeth Gilbert

7. Iyanla Vanzant

8. Ken Wilber

9. James Redfield

10. Rhonda Byrne

I know you didn't want debate, but I would say that I am sus on the Dalai Lama, and on Ken Wilbur. Some of the others I don't know, yet am doing very fine thank you despite of this. May I also add that second hand spirituality is of as much use as a bicycle is to a fish. For all of us, the most spiritually influential person should be ourselves. I am always incredibly sus on what the mass media tells me, and that includes this list. There are some real deal names there (eg Tolle) but that is how the NWO brigade works - the cancer is included within the presentation of the healthy cell so it will pass unnoticed. By all means, take guidance from spiritual teachers, but no spiritual experience is valid or useful except our own personal experience.

i'm not aware materials of those listed people but i have one question to ask, do they said anything or mentio anything like David Icke where he always talked about Controllers who control the planet by using any means through Religion-Money-Education and stop giving up your powers to these Controllers. we can talked about spiritual all day long but if we can't have the system to support and help us towards be a Spiritual beings like other civilization from outer space eg, Andromedea then it's useless.

how can we be spiritual with these Controllers(secret society. TBTP...what ever you want to call them) and their Self To Serve Systems to control humans on planet earth. i find the answer is not these guys like Dalai Lama but more of guys like Alex Collier(underlying message)-Icke-Santos Bonacci ..ect to awake humanity.

Spiritually is one thing but having the system is another...2 of them co-exist.

I think perhaps that Spiritual is the wrong word for this list, because quite clearly some of them are alchemists, scientists, historians, archaeologists etc. so maybe it should be renamed a list of people with/in search of Esoteric Knowledge.

You forgot to mention the one who is and always will be top of the list.
The one that makes you realize the truth and helps you make up your mind.

YOU

That makes the rest of the list the 100 least not spiritually influential. That makes more sense.

Oprah Winfrey # 16? C'mon.

"All the world's major religions, with their emphasis on love, compassion, patience, tolerance, and forgiveness can and do promote inner values. But the reality of the world today is that grounding ethics in religion is no longer adequate. This is why I am increasingly convinced that the time has come to find a way of thinking about spirituality and ethics beyond religion altogether."

Kind of a potpurri of a list IMO, I mean...they included Oprah Winfrey, not the same sort of spiritual influencer as the Dalai Lama who, in turn, is no way similar to Brian Weiss, and the examples could go on but I guess they are rating the level of influence on a general and broadly ranging definition of spirituality.

Anyway, personally I would add Marshall Vian Summers, author of Steps to Knowledge and other great spiritual books totalling close to 10k pages.

This list is probably as useful as those who have received the Nobel Peace Prize.
I could list a few other lists but I have a list of other things to do!

I agree with finefeather.

The fact that an article is out there about spirituality is good, but I have to ask: who made the list to begin with, what was the basis of it, and why? Other that that, considering a lot of people don't think enough about spirituality, then who am I to complain?

Watkins is a London book store, famous for specialising in books on spirituality so I would guess the purpose of the list is to do with sales.

My first thought, too. I looked forward to some of her 'spiritual' guests, but had to DVD the show ahead of time so I could fast forward every time she spoke as if she was the authority. Then the last several years, I didn't bother. Finally figured out just cancel TV service altogether.

PS I'm on my own top ten list, and some from PA are on it as well. I've saved many posts from You All. My thanks.

Agreed, well said. And sums up the choice the "masses" seem to prefer in place of spirituality: $$$$ SALES! CONSUME! $$$$ ....what's more important??

You're on my list whitecrow ;)

The thing about the list (not to throw the baby out with the bathwater), is that these are all outlets for people to at least get IDEAS about what to think....especially Oprah.

Think about it: most people won't read a book, watch a "boring" interview, explore anything...the more stomach churning ones on this list (is doctor phil on there? I just watched him have on that physic dude Oliver on, horrible)...anyway--the worst of these people present bubble gum for the masses that want bubble gum, maybe a small percentage were inspired to take it to the next step, despite the fact that folks Oprah (and Dr Phil by proxy) stay away from the substance and focus on the emotional nonsense.

Thanks for posting this list. Without it I would not have discovered Krishna Dass's wonderful kirtan style singing and prompted me to seek out more of Ram Dass's material that I could not formerly obtain.

I don't care why the list exists, or what its purpose is or was, it has had a good effect on me!

Thanks.

There are some who do not need to be on a list to prove to the world how spiritual they are,

If you ever get the chance, take time to sit with this man; S.N.Goenka, and your smile with the experience of seeing a stage Jhana within yourself.
