"Japan has called for the phasing out of nuclear power in the country over the next 30 years following the devastation of the Fukushima meltdown.
A Japanese Cabinet panel today called for the phasing out of nuclear power, as it overhauls its energy policy in the wake of last year's disaster.
Adopting the proposals would be a break with Japan's decades-long advocacy of nuclear power."

I think in light of the devastating disaster it is a sensible move. In view of Japan's history with the effects of nuclear power, it surprises me that they even had nuclear reactors in the first place.

It will be interesting to see what forms of power they turn to considering they have a huge population, little earth resouces and are highly techinical. They may be just the ones to break through in free energy as all else will be not so efficient for thier high demads or too expensive.

It is not clear from the article with what do they plan to replace the nuclear power... no more it's said than "renewable energy" and for now imports of gas and petroleum have surged. Guess who benefits from all this...
What is happening is outrageous considering we have had clean abudant energy from the time of Nikola Tesla (if not before him) and yet we still kill ourselves and the planet burning through fossil fuels or using nuclear power. Last time I've checked there was no clean way to dispose of (or neutralise) the waste resulted from running a nuclear plant.
How many disasters need to happen before people finally wake up and demand abundant and clean energy?

They will find the way, I'm sure. But how many lives were lost to look in different direction.

End nuclear power now, it will be the end of civilization it we continue to use atomic power. The past all around the universe is littered with atomic devistation, earthlings are not advanced enough to use atomic power. Good for Japan, but I'm afraid it's too late for them. We could be next.

Too little, too late.

might be the perfect opportunity to introduce renewable energy

Tidal or wave energy would be wonderful for Japan ... endless and imminently renewable ... theyve got volcanoes and hotsprings so geothermal also ...

I think Japan will shut down older nuclear power plants and replace them with modern safe ones, like "pebble" nuclear reactors.

yip, that was a mass-isation of decades only nuclear technology,
imagine storing that bomb on your soil, esp. when u could be a target for sabortage (cpu like for this,), or tsunamies (which can also be replicated)..{put together RIce info flow of stuxnet and haarp}
