I see it's now going to be three films, not two!

Now some of us will be thinking about the end of the mayan calander come December... I myself will be thinking about the beginning of the great adventure of life in the movie theatre while watching this first instalment of the Hobbit. This movie can give us great hope... "For even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

From the Heart,
Kristin

What about Smaug? I've waited my whole life for a movie of the Hobbit so I could see Smaug, the baddest dragon ever!

I trust Peter Jackson will not let me down :)

I am not sure if the above picture is from the movie or a concept ...But I'm sure
it will be good !!

Actually thinking about it I doubt if Smaug will be in the first film , unless he
is discussed and they show him in that context....

That's cheered me up!!! Benedict C + Martin Freeman! + all the usual suspects from L of the R. This is something to look forward to! I think that those actors just look forward to a stay in N Z which is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and a brilliant place to film a movie that needs a vision of pristine country side. There really is some left there!

I hope it's as good as L of the R as I thought that would have been impossible to film--- but, even though a lot was left out it really is a brilliant trilogy, I think. I am a bit concerned that it may be dragged out too much with 3 movies though. 'The Hobbit' is not a long book, and it is a much simpler plot when compared to L of the R. It does not have all the exploration of customs and traditions of Middle Earth and its message is much simpler. 3 movies may literally be too much of a stretch.

From what I've read today it looks like Peter Jackson is showing some of the origins of Sauron and what Gandalf gets up to when he leaves the Dwarfs (believe that was Tolkiens preferred plural) and Bilbo.
Yeah Ellisa it's not a long book comapared to LOTR but it's not short either and a lot goes on but I'm also interested to see how he stretches it out to three films.

PJ has turned the Hobbit into a timepiece of Middle Earth. Where Gandalf goes when he leaves the the company will be covered as well as the meeting of the White Council and their driving the Necromancer(Sauron) out of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. These films will be a rich immersion into the many goings on in Middle Earth during the time of Bilbo's journey.

There is rumor that some history of the Dwarves of the Iron Hills, Dain's folk (Thorins people) will be covered. A pivotal battle between the Dwarves and Goblins is said to be featured. This is all in the first film. The second film has a working title of The Desolation of Smaug. I, for one, look forward to this more adult telling of this part of Middle Earth history. I think the concept is a brilliant use of some of the material Tolkien included in his appendices at the end of the Return of the King book. I will be seeing it with another big Tolkien fan and former Avalon member.

It is intriguing they are using the same methods of filming for Smaug as they do for Gollum. this leads me to think that Smaug will be the kind of reptilian that has some vertical capability in standing....we'll see! Looking forward to the 3D experience.
This Saturday, I am visiting a local pub here called 'The Hobbit'. Recently, there was some dispute regarding its name. However, actors of the film (Ian Mcellan, Stephen Fry, etc) protested against the fill makers, in favour of the pub owner!
