Does "The Secret" Really Work?

My husband was surfing Netflix last night and came across a documentary of sorts about "The Secret" where some supposedly educated people from various fields talked about how each of us can manifest whatever we want if we just follow a simple set of directions. They seemed truly honest in their attempt to convey this "secret" to the viewers. Even Neale Donald Walsch was on it (whom I have a great respect for). But, it still seemed to good to be true. I was wondering if it was really possible to just have the Universe bring something you want (or don't want) into your life by just expressing your desire for it and then acting as if you already received it. Having genuine gratitude seems to help the process along too. I've kicked something out to the Universe as sort of a test run....something very inexpensive but would mean a lot to me if it showed up on my doorstep in the next few days without me having to actually order it off the internet.

What's the real deal with this? Is it a actual way to access the wealth of the Universe for yourself? I don't want to come across as a greedy person because I'm not, but there are few things which I would love to have without having to spend any money for them. I'm really not interested in multi-million dollar homes, expensive cars or anything like that, but a couple of much less expensive things...around $200 - 500 would really blow me away if they showed up on my doorstep out of the blue just for me putting out to the Universe that I wanted them.

I think "The secret" has become misused as a way to gain wealth. I have seen this documentary and it only mentions half of it. I think it is sad how Rhonda Byrne uses almost only examples about material things in her book. I don´t think this is the reason it should be used at all. I do think this instrument should be used to change you life in other ways instead.

I have tried it myself but with quite the opposite result I wanted. I wished for a change in my life, and I got it but it turned out to be a test of how true I was to myself and people around me. In the end, I learned a lesson which told me why I wanted the change in the first place.

However, I have found these things to be the most important to think about:
- you must be able to formulate exactly what you want, and I mean exactly
- you must want to have this with all your heart, the slightest doubt will disturb the wish
- you must not wish for anything for your own sake, others must benefit from it too
- you must feel that you have earnt it, but not by sacrificing yourself for it
- you only get what is rightfully yours

I do not think gratitude is a part of this, however it is important to feel gratitude anyway. I also know that the way this practice is described is that if you don´t get what you wish for, you haven´t wished hard enough. That is bull****. It is only because you are not supposed to have it in this time in your life. This is meant to be.

I recommend you to study esoteric teachings, this practice is used in several mystical orders where it is described more seriously than "The secret" - campaign even if it is good that it has come to the surface.

It works for me, you also need patients an learn how to read synchronicity, learn to use one's intuition.
If one is not in tune with one's self, then not many things will happen.

Course this is just the tip of the ice burg when it comes to manifestation.

I know for certain that the Secret works. Came to that conclusion decades before the documentary came out.
The universe is simply set up in such a manner that it responds to people's consciousness... If people could examine how their wishes and emotions and thoughts shift in a single day they would understand that the universe sends them conflicting messages back.
Self definition is the first step...once one is clear on what one wants to aim for then the rest becomes easy because the universe rushes in to assist.
If one changes one's mind then the universe scrambles to take back it's earlier efforts to grant wishes, and gets busy granting the wish that followed the earlier one.

About the movie: The fact that the team used money and material concepts is that those are the values of a 3d existence, and did so in order to reach a larger audience.
Money is the bottom line tool for freedom and creativity. That it has so many negative connotations in the eyes of many in the alternative community has several reasons...
It is associated with greed and hoarding and crime .... Those who do the hoarding are frightened of living like the poor.
Those who understand the Secret and apply its rules don't need to ask for money...it's so much easier to ask for _whatever_, as the need arises, and it will show up. Like that McGuiver character on TV years ago.

If people think that they need expensive cars to express their personal style with, so be it. It's where they are at. The same goes for designer clothes. All those choices signal to others where one's identification lies, and what circles one wishes to move in.
The main thing is not to worry too much about how others go through life or how they expressthemselves, but define for oneself what one wishes to do with one's own life, and how to be one's own man ( woman)

He did NOT write the secret, that was Rhonda Byrne...(he was in the movie however and he was found not guilty)...Rhonda Byrne actually took all of the information obtained from filming a week long cruise with Abraham Hicks and turned it into that movie......apparently many of the people featured in the movie didn't even know about the Secret until they were hired to do the movie.....yes they knew about positive affirmations and goal setting but not The Secret as it came to be known.

The Secret movie is only a collection of age old rules for manefesting. Nothing new there really. That it is directed only in material acquistion reflects on the the belief of the movie creator that this is what most people will respond to, which was unfortunate. It could have been so much more.

I learned these techniques through the Church of Religious Science when I was quite young and these teachings can be found in many different places. I can clearly and confidently say that it does work, although some things take longer than others and in some things I was not clear enough on so what I received was not exactly what I was looking for, although close... so modifications sometimes need to be made down the road.

Clearly on the collective level we see the workings in the manefestaions of war, failing economic policy, religion based hatred, racism, etc.. It all comes about through the same manefestation principles. You can work the teaching in the light or in the dark according to your limited beliefs and fears or upon your beliefs in abundance, sustainability, courage and love.

I can clearly see the divisions on this forum... those who believe they have no power to a create new and just reality and those who believe that they will be forever controlled by forces outside of themselves. In this belief they sustain exactly what they fear and do not want and as they go about their lives spewing the trash necessary to create more damage, which in essence aligns them with what they fear most as they become co-creators in their own demise.

Money can be made in many different ways. They could have made more with deception, rather than stating the truth.
Many people benefitted from the movie as well as from the book and as a result have come off their anti-depressants.
People who were previously stuck in life awakened because of it and got an infusion of fresh hope.

I've just never known that anything like this could be done. I'm asking for roll of plastic.....believe it or not! But, it's special plastic and I don't have the $148.00 dollars that it costs, and I really do want it. I picture it in my mind, I know what it's like because I bought a roll of it a few weeks ago but now I need more. I don't think I can give any clearer visualizations to the Universe than my memories of using it.....how it feels, what it looks and smells like, how it was packaged, etc.....Thanks for all the posts both for and against it! I wanted to hear all sides to it and my gut instinct is telling me that it does work, but I have to be very specific and believe that it is in the mail on the way to my house. If this works I will definitely write back about it! I'm excited hoping it will really happen. And I want the big roll, not the little roll o.k. Universe? lol! THANKS!!!!!! :)

I remember about a year and a half ago I thought how I wanted a chihuahua but there was no way I could afford to buy one. Then the neighbor up the street told me her daughter (a veterinarian) had an abandoned 1 year old chihuahua who needed a home and I got her! And how does it feel to have what you wanted? How does it feel to touch it? Invest all your senses in the experience. Then let it go for a while. Repeat as needed. It might take some time.

So, I imagine intensely what it feels like to walk out to the garage door and see my box of plastic leaning against it. I imagine my joy in seeing it....I will probably just stare at it in amazement for a few moments then gently touch the box! I pick it up, smell the cardboard, shake it to hear the roll of plastic bouncing inside (while shouting THANK YOU GOD!!! silently inside my head), then I'll carry it inside and lay it on the floor and just stare at it some more. I want to savor the moment! Then I'll slowly open it up. Inside is my beautiful roll of plastic delivered to me compliments of the Universe!!! Wait till I show it to my husband! I told him last night while we were both watching "the secret" that that's what I wanted to ask for. He was less believing than I was so this will be a good thing for him too. :)

Maybe visualizing a particular day next week for example would help as well. Just decide it's going to happen and leave it, otherwise you are focussing on your fear that it won't!

If you really examine your life, scrutinize it and then ask yourself " Is there anything I have ever really wanted, deeply longed for in which I invested thought and energy that hasn't materialized?" More than likely, the answer would be no. You have to want it on a cellular level. If your higher self is in agreement, you achieve your desires. I think the secret works but not always exactly the way that it is "romanticized" in the movie. I think sometimes you have to experience a bridge of events that help the manifestations to surface through the human imagination. However, sometimes those bridge of events are not always positive. I think this is the universe's way of telling us that we are in this world to "perfect the art of manifestation."

If you look at all these new age teachings today, all the excercises given (even the so called "magick books" and diaries) they all emanate from ancient spiritual teachings, and are commonly found in the mystery schools.

This includes "clearing the mind," learning to selectively think, learning to be "aware of the body," and being aware of the subconscious/mental routines that we do every day and may be harming us. But unlike LOA, it tells you to be your own harshest critic, to know and understand EVERY single "flaw" that you have and look at its ugly head(s).

The Law of Attraction essentially tells you that you attract what you don't want, and that which you obsess about, this is true. So it tells you to flip it and selectively choose positive thoughts. They use examples of money, a nice bicycle, of a nice house and lots of things- which is a trap in itself because they don't focus on the SPIRITUAL aspect of it...at all, which is the meat and bones of the mystery teachings.

You don't want to just control your thoughts and energies for the sake of some hypnotic state of happiness, or to get a new house. You want to do this so you can finally begin to understand your true self. To EMPOWER ourselves by being able to take control over our words, thoughts, actions, energies and be FULLY conscious of what we are doing in THAT moment.

The LOA stuff also doesn't teach you how to "increase" your influence, and visualization skills in a way that can create what you truly desire in your life. And with this, I don't mean this as an insult- I actually agree with all this stuff not being fully "revealed" to people yet. It can lead to someones ruin and psychological imbalances. Like the "amrita" or the "philosophers stone" it can be poison to people who plunge deep into these kind of things without first understanding themselves.

I'll give you an example of someone I know in real life who LOVES "the secret." She's right about many things, as are all of us in regards to who we attract, why, our goals and how we "attract" them to us. But the concept of "attraction" is an external one, it teaches you that you are simply "attracting bad" in your life BECAUSE of your own thinking patterns. She is a person whose life is now "seemingly" perfect and portrays this to everybody, including her relationship (boyfriend), but behind closed doors is in actuality, incredibly paranoid,needy for attention, drama, and much more. She often would vent all her negativity on some of her closest friends, but when someone can to her with "their negativity" she could not handle it. She's GREAT and controlling her thoughts and seeing "the bright side" but so much so that she doesn't see the realistic severity of things in her life, sometimes things about her, that are asking for her to pay attention.

This is not entirely true, "Attraction" is an external concept that makes you think of you and others as magnets. In actuality, the outer is a manifestation of the inner and events come into your life, "obstacles" (bad or good) because your spirit desires (true NEED) to LEARN something. So when you have this mentality that all this negativity is the bane of existence, and only creating positive thoughts- you NEGLECT a part of what your subconscious is trying to TEACH you in your "manifested" reality.

This leads, to always being happy on the outside, and creating a life that is good for yourself SOMETIMES at the cost of others- who may have genuine problems, or a karmic tie to you that you "blow off" simply because "they are not in your happy frequency." Pretending you don't have a shadow doesn't make it go away. If you want to stand in the light you see your shadow very clearly.

Therefore, the "Secret" is in understanding, in the moment, in the now, and always that EVERYTHING that comes into your life is a manifested (and observed) reality that YOU CREATED based on your inner condition. Yes, sometimes we can go in routine and our subconscious can manifest illnesses, negativity, and all sorts of things that we don't WANT or NEED in our lives. But often times they are there because it is something deep INSIDE you (not outside, attraction) that is begging to be NOTICED. Desire is not about what your ego wants. The Buddhists like to say that it is suffering. Not true. Desire is what you truly need as a spiritual being. If you know this, things will manifest into your life instantly (no joke) because you become a "vessel" (using a kaballistic word here) for the "need" yourself, as a spiritual being wishes to express in the material reality.

By truly understanding yourself, you understand "God" or at least, that spark that is One with all things. From my own direct experience, yes, there is the ability to manifest. it does not come from "wanting" something,although intent is sometimes confused with desire. One must "clear" and then vibrate at the exact match of the intended outcome. Simple, but not easy. The universe is entirely neutral in how this works. That's because, as I mentioned. They are working with the outside and not the inside.

Example: Person has lots of internal issues, that are manifesting outwardly into their life. Person reads/hears the secret. Oh! So if I change my superficial thought patterns and selectively choose positive thoughts- I will manifest the right life!? RIGHT. Then I can make however much money I want and become famous! Meanwhile, those internal issues grow bigger and bigger. As they do, the person compensates by selectively thinking positively. But the issue is never healed, it is never looked at. Those positive thoughts, and positive outcomes end up actually covering up the issues. Good things do come in, and some of the desires DO manifest. But eventually, like cause and effect, that ripple becomes a wave and soon enough it all comes crashing down to reveal the core issues that are actually at the root of the negative outward manifestations in the first place.

The "secret" is actually, far more profound. Thought is, reality. But you cannot take a hold of the outer reality without first taking hold of your inner one. You create with source as source- and there is NO faking that. Most people who I have seen apply LOA do it from solely a place of Ego.

The Elite, and others up there DO know the power and secrets of manifestation. And they know it in a way that blows LOA out of the water. "The secret" is their watered down version, handed to you- sugar coated with promises of money and success. Once again, this feeds their system.

As for the duality and forcing bit. Well think about this. You want to "manifest" something good for yourself, at the cost of others. I'll give a crude example: a job. Well that's not so bad is it? But who gets fired? Who doesn't get the job? Maybe that person has 3 kids and a failing mortgage and needed it more than you.

There is nothing wrong with manifestation. I have asked the Universe to please cancel my order for the plastic. I've prayed about it and feel that this is not really the best way to go about getting things. I wasn't very doubtful of the process, I believed somehow the plastic would arrive, but this just isn't how it's supposed to work. It may lead me down the wrong path and it's not where I want to go. Life is meant to be good! and asking for something that you think would make your family more comfortable over the coming winter doesn't seem like a problem to me......do you think The Secret conflicts with your religious beliefs? I still believe that I get most of what I desire....just not as directly as having them arrived one day on my doorstep just for the asking to the Universe. We somehow get enough money to pay for them and that money has to come from somewhere....a job, which comes from somewhere....God? Granted, our family could certainly do with about $20,000 more/year to lower our monthly stress level over making sure the basic bills get paid, much less anything left over to spend on ourselves just for the pleasure of it. I can ask for more students to teach and thus bring in more money and that's more productive than just having a check arrive in the mail from a mysterious donor. If I teach a person how to play a musical instrument and get paid for it, then we both get the gift of getting to know each other, the student gets to learn how to play an instrument and I get doubly rewarded by getting money and knowing that I've brought some pleasure into another person's life by helping them remember how to play an instrument. So, asking my HP or the Universe for more students is fair and new students will be forthcoming. I like this method much better than just visualizing a box of plastic or whatever just spontaneously appearing one day on the front porch. :)

the Law of Attraction is working every day for everyone, we are creating our reality either deliberately or by default, but the LAW of attraction is working always .....even if we don't believe it.....even if we are not aware of it ...therefore if you believe the only way you can get the extra money you desire is by working harder then that is exactly what you will have to do
.....but if you believe that that money can come to you by a windfall, a gift, a lottery win or ways you can't even think of , then that can also happen.....and when you have that money you can also do good with it , like donate to a local fund that provides music lessons for needy children.....meanwhile leaving you the time to do the research and such that you are feeling you really want to do now.
IF you really want and enjoy teaching as many students as you can fit in a day that's great, law of attraction can bring that to you , but if you are doing it only because you feel that's the only way you can get the extra $20,000 a year then that is what will need to happen.
I think many (most?) of us were raised to believe Nothing comes easy, Money doesn't grow on Trees, You have to work hard for things, people are 'filthy rich' (why are they filthy???).......we are not taught you can have, be and do anything you want.....Ask, Believe and Receive......why is that wrong?
In the end what ever feels right to you is right for you .....I am personally working to remove all the programming that told me things had to be hard, and that people like me only ever make this much money, that I don't have the skill, the knowledge, the ability to be rich.......ANYONE can be rich, if we just believe it .... riches do not have to mean we are not a good person.......as being relatively poor does not mean you are a bad person........we all came here for different lessons and some prefer to do it in poverty and some in riches....both are okay.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I think it's all perfectly fine and good. I'm still just trying to sort it all out. I need to meditate on it a lot more and see what information pops out. Might try to do some lucid dreaming and ask a dream character what they think about it. I'm not shut down to it, it just still has some quirks that I'm not yet comfortable with. exactly LB, I did the purple feather myself and was amazed the way I found it......I heard a voice in my head telling me to do something little, and it sounded like my voice, and when I didn't do what was asked, my 'voice' said well you are asking for a sign yet you won't do what we ask you to do.... so I did what I was told and laughing, pulled open a curtain and there on a package was a load of purple feathers in the logo .......it was pretty cool.....that voice that sounds like you is often your higher self.

I would take the passive observer/active observer idea further and say that we should make the effort to move away from reacting and try to observe and respond as a choice.

I used to practise this in supermarket queues to overcome the immense impatience and thus stress I would experience while waiting to get to the front of the queue and invariably having someone behind me crowding my personal space. Be still observe, appreciate. It worked. By the time I get to the front of the queue I am so full of positive energy that the person behind the till strikes up a conversation with me (discussing the merits and demerits of what I am buying and a problem her aunt once removed has for which you used ...), which holds up the queue behind me, but I always feel good that I have connected with a person!

It really depends on where you are with your personal spiritual evolution.
The Secret is partly about getting what the ego wants in order to be happy.
A higher spiritual perspective is that happiness comes from within and is not influence greatly by external circumstances though obviously extremes of poverty, poor health are not helpful to well being.

Given fairly normal circumstances additional material things are not going to create happiness.
Many who have won the lottery have not found lasting happiness though this.
The richest man on the planet at that time, Howard Hughes, was asked if he had enough--- not quite yet, was the answer.
So be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

Does the Secret work?
Well it did for the writer.
Of the thousands who seriously used the techniques, I guess that for some it worked but the majority no.

If you are trying to document your belief that you will attract duality or both... you picked a very poor example.
Ray did not work the energy properly. He defied the teachings that surround the sweat lodge, he was never given permission, he charged money against the rules of the use of the sweat lodge, he did not respect the participants who entered his sweat lodge,

In essence he broke every rule around sacred sweat lodge that he stole from Native Americans. He did not perform the cermony honorably and hence changed it into something other, from a sacred ceremony backed by centuries of tradition snd prayer, with ingrained rules and laws to work with sacred magick. He knew not what he was doing so yes, he is paying. His intent was ALL WRONG and aggrevious. Hence the energy went caotic and dangerous for it was not confined to the sacred rules and laws that had been developed around it.

On the other hand there are many Native Americans and people of other race and nationality who preform the sacred sweat without problems and maintain its sacred paradigm, as given to them through their teachers., for the highest good of all.

It is not that this man wanted money, or power, it is how he went about it to get it. Just like any other endeavor to get money or material goods, is your intent with honor and with honesty? Is your intent for the higher good? Is your intent that which does not transgress the sacred?

then after you receive what you are seeking are you solid enough, intent clear enough to maintain the energey without causing trouble in other areas of your life.


The workings of sacred magick and manefestation are not as simple as the secret would have you think... although it does work according to what the secret teaches. its just does not teach the whole story. Your intent must be pure and clear and solid and if it is not aligned with the highest good for all there will be trouble down the line and your magical workings will pull in a wrangled mess of karmic turmoil to be worked out as time goes by.

Although I think The Secret is a bit of a perversion of universal laws...as it seems to be wholly focused on acquiring wealth...it does work.

I have found that in the last year, it works better, faster and with less effort. I assume part of that is because of the increase in energy coming into the planet, and although I'm not entirely sure of all the particulars, here are some of the things I've learned that seem to be working for me.

Don't try to create with a negative, it doesn't work. "I will not get the flu" or "I will not lose my job" is counter-productive. The universe, or God, or the quantum field or whatever, does not seem to catch the "not" part and only seems to hear the "I will" part.

I've come to the conclussion that I am not doing the manifesting....the universe is. My part in the creative process is to decide clearly what I want, form a mental image of what I want, express a desire to have it (I would love to have, or I wish I had) FEEL (not imagine) the corresponding emotion of having it (joy, gratitude, love, happiness) and then release it to the universe.

Don't invest too much importance or need into what you want, just try to stay in a place of gratitude for what you already have.

Also, I wouldn't fret too much on that whole, "be careful what you wish for" or "monkey paw" thing. A roll of plastic is pretty innocuous, unless your planning on wrapping a dead body in it. (Although from another angle, a roll of plastic is helping to support the oil industry.)

I think the elite want us to be fearful of wishing or creating. They have encouraged our tendency to think we aren't clever enough to know how to make intelligent creative choices and foster the belief that we will somehow be punished for them.

We are creative beings and it's our right to exercise that creativity.

I love knowing that I created something, even the bad stuff if you can stop and recognize ' I did this'.......it gives you power! blaming others, the universe, bad timing, if they were different this wouldn't have happened, etc is just giving YOUR power away......its great to notice how something you thought earlier set you up for what happened.

Thank you to every one on this thread <3 Ive recently been introduced to the secret. Suffering from depression has always been an obstacle for thinking positive, but through meditation and the secret, i have learnt to focus on the positive, and not dwell on the negative, as im empowering it by doing do.
I repeat a mantra to myself daily and now i tell myself i AM happy. I picture myself happy, with lots of bespoke orders coming in, I imagine a life where i can go part time so i can help care for my mom and build my handmade business up from home. I picture orders coming in with cool obscure ideas (i make alternative jewellery and skulls), and I picture receiving enough money through orders to compensate for going part time, I picture my mom smiling at me mid day when id usually be at work, but im at home making jewellery and making my mom smile, making sure she has everything she needs to be comfortable (poorly lady bless her). This is truely what i want and when i think about how much id appreciate it, my body almost vibrates with what i can only describe a warm fuzzy feeling that waves over me. I cant tell if that is my gratitude or if its the feeling of really really wanting something. Either way, Im happier in myself, and that alone is enough for me to be thankful my friend Kelley introduced me to the secret <3
This thread has pretty much allowed me to put my full faith in this, because my intentions are positive and not tainted by greed or negativity :-)

Somewhat similar, to methods employed in 'the secret' but not affiliated with the secret. A stunning experience took place within the last two months. Perhaps those living in Switzerland can un/confirm whether the story is yet to be published in the magazines or newspapers. I suspect when published the focus may well be on the result, rather than what may have contributions to the outcome.

An economist student from Switzerland (but studying London) found herself in January unexpectedly attending an afterparty of the Golden Globe Awards (2014).

The understanding is that whilst studying in London during the fall she realised, she did not want to pursue a career as an economist. She suddenly had the urge to be an Actress. Note she has no previous training in the field. However she somehow understands she may have be an actor in a past life. This is perhaps what passionately urges her sudden change of interest. She begins to intend, vocalise, behave and see herself has an actress. She feels, believes and understands this to be her life, truly; whilst still studying economics in the fall of last year. She continues in this manner for weeks.

As the Christmas holidays approach together with her mother they book a short winter holiday stay in Los Angeles. When in LA she notices posters advertising the coming Golden Globe Awards. Excitedly she informs her mother of her wish to attend the award show. They solicit the help of an individual working at the hotel, they are checked-in. The individual tells them that it would be near impossible to make such an arrangement (as the award show is strictly a guest invitational affaire). He manages to however arrange for their attendance to the afterparty of the Golden Globes.

At the Golden Globes the student meets the various Actors/ Actresses she admires. It is noted that at the afterparty her appearance/ demeanour (unintended) was like that of a seasoned actress, and a good number of professional actors/ actress seemed drawn to enquire of her. She made acquaintance with a few good directors and actors/ actress who offered to coach her with advice in acting.

She now resides, works and studies (performing art??) in Los Angeles.

I am very poor in monetary realm of this life, so I know I haven't misused any powers/secretes ;)

One part of the trick you need to know is: Attention to the small beginnings and details of cause and effect I.E You want a specific thing/item well! don't wish for it directly; work out it's path to you by taking smaller steps! One thing leads to another.

First of all, take care of your Day-to-Day world in a 'Just way' If need too use extra energy to manifest something make sure it's really needed.
Health for another soul or manifesting your self and a friend through an impossible to get out of car accident with no harm at the end of it, etc!

I think 'The Secret' was done by people who don't really understand 'manifestation'.
You are already manifesting everything.
I recommend Bashar and Lester Levenson they explain it well.

I was manifesting before the secret came out. I can manifest lots of things. I really like it because we can all do it. Life can be abundant for us all. "The Secret" does a good job. "The Shift" by Wayne Dyer also but I felt it dragged. "What the Bleep Down the Rabbit Hole" is also great and "The Celestine Prophesies". You do manifest always so take charge and we can all live happy, fulfilling lives. Manifest your hearts desire. Abraham Hicks and Bashar...

I know it works and I can do amazing things now. It really does, try it.
