I seems there might be some interest in starting our own Market Place in keeping with our community beliefs. This thread is for members who:
have stuff to give away
want to buy
sell
trade or exchange
barter
swap
and any other things that make up a caring community (From post 557028 (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?50038-Suggestion--give-away-sell-buy-trade-exchange-barter-swap-&p=557028#post557028))

I know many people have some great hobbies (orgone things, knitwear, quilts, home made preserves, bee products, kids toys, old arts, etc) and it would be great to support those people.

We also have immensly talented people here - so it could perhaps include a bartering system, where a haircut is paid for with apples, or music lessons swapped for art work, (location of course being pivotal) you get the picture

I would dearly love to buy some heritage seeds from anyone here who has them.

Free - new morphy richards slow cooker Used once - PM me for where to pick up

Skid suggested book trading as well - great idea

Awesome!! I had this idea a while ago but then forgot. I think it is a brilliant idea! I fully support it! Just my $5.00 worth ;)

Are there any legal considerations?

I guess it would work like any other online trading place. Transaction between 2 people and buyer beware. No guarantees. If kept between ourselves (members only) I cant see there being any dramas. We are all reasonable people and a caring community. This is just a little way to be the change we want to see around us

I am still a provisional member, however I think it is a great idea!

Well with all legal considerations aside, there should be defined criteria that each transaction should abide by. For example - stated and sworn by: article condition, shipping method, price, and payment method/type. - something like that. Just keep the level of satisfaction and quality high? I still think someone with legal knowledge should pipe in. Just in case. After-the-fact is always a pain. ;)

I love this idea and sure hope the creation of a Community Market place comes to fruition. I would love to support and purchase products from people I trust and know even if it is only from the forum exposure and not in person. I believe in the Avalon Community and the goodness of our members. :-}

I'm glad to see more support for the idea now.
It does take a while before something like this can get started.
The first time I brought it up there was no response at all.

Here are some earlier discussions about the topic.

I already do a lot of this in my local area.
***I just finished selling some of my red worms
***I give away extra garden produce, flowers, and kefir starter grains on a consistent basis.
***I treasure hunt in local thrift stores and turn my unused stuff in for someone else to find.
***I buy or trade with local farmers for their produce.
*** I use my local Craigslist ever day to find things and to share things I don't use any more.

My partner and I have a home business and sell our products all over the place through the internet using PayPal to collect payments from out customers.

Doing this on Avalon sounds like fun, however our Avalon community is spread all over the globe. We might feel close and connected.. and we are... but physically we are quite far apart. Then there is the issue and Avalon does not allow anyone to promote their business within the forum.

I'm not sure how this marketplace can operate within Avalon.... but community markets are something that most people can choose to participate in at any time. I think they are a normal part of being in human community with is why they are almost always a part of every town and area.

Hey Benny thanks. Dawn, I totally agree with Avalon principle that any business should not be advertising regardless of what it is.
I do not see this as a money making thread for anyone or an advertising / marketing opportunity!
Its simply about the very human principle of sharing and genuinly helping others within our little community as we are able.

FYI re buying some things inexpensively:

In Oregon and probably elsewhere, Goodwill Industries has "Outlet Stores" where they sell seemingly everything that hasn't sold in their regular stores. Except for heavy items like furniture and books, everything is sold by the pound, starting at $1.39 and topping out at 89 cents for 25+ pounds.

There are a lot of electronics, about which I know nothing, so I don't look at them.

Be prepared to dig through long, shallow bins--no tidy racks at the Outlet Store.

Many items are not bought at the regular Goodwill stores because they're too expensive, but based on weight, they're much more affordable. Yesterday I scored a beautiful comforter, two handsome wool pullovers, a Carhart jacket, a set of gorgeous curtains, a hand-knotted wool throw rug from India, and a bunch of jeans and shirts--71 pounds @ 89 cents = $60!!!

Hope this helps!

Peace Love Joy & Harmony,
Genevieve

What a great idea Benny and way to meet some fellow Avalonians. So in saying this I too offer lodgings for anyone coming out my way for a holiday and or passing through. Only have a small place but could handle giving up my bed and one other for guests :)

You know, all day I thought about my above post and wondered if I was being arrogant and acting as a 'wet blanket' on the Avalon marketplace idea. I like the idea of people posting a desire for seeds or ormus. Perhaps someone who has something that another is looking for can PM an answer and we could make this work without changing Avalon's 'no personal marketing' rule. Perhaps the Market could be more like a Wanted section with actual negotiations going on in answering PMs????

Today I went to a yarn shop to purchase a skein of cashmere yarn. I plan to repair the 17 missing fringes on a pure Mongolian cashmere blanket I bought in a thrift store for $2.00. Except for these few absent fringes, the blanket is in perfect condition, and so warm and soft. I'm glad someone gave it to a thrift store instead of putting it into the trash so that I could find it and enjoy it for myself.

I love re-purposing things that others are done with.... I feel so warm and protective towards items I've nurtured back to a state of 'brand new ness'. This is such a green and wonderful way to live with the earth.

NOTE: Today I began my fall garden which meant pulling out some marigolds that were in full bloom. A few neighbors stopped by for jars filled with flowers that I cut off the disguarded plants. One young lady in her early 20s started a conversation with me and I realized she did not understand how plants came from seeds. She thought it was magical that the plants made seeds to re-plant themselves next year. Her excitement and wonder was contagious. It is very sad that there are young people who have no idea how plants replace themselves.

If a few people on Avalon would like organic seeds I have enough to share a bit. I just need to be reimbursed for postage to mail them. I have:
serrano peppers,
jalapeno peppers,
purple carrots with orange centers,
orange Asian Kuruda carrots
huge marigolds that grow 36" tall and make 4-5 inches balls shaped flowers ranging from pale yellow through all the orange shades to deep orange
little bright orange zinnias that grow a mere 12" tall and bloom all summer

I have organic Lambs Quarter's seeds for sale. $3 a pack, harvested from my land. They are great as sustainable food source but can take over if you are not careful. They can grow out of dry bone earth. They need no watering but are known to grow in many climates... are prolific in disturbed soil and not so prolific otherwise. They are highly nutritious and I prefer lambs quarters over spinach. You can harvest leaves all summer and they just keep producing.. Known as the Pioneers survival food. I call them Saving Grace. Freezes well, Seeds can be ground into flour. After they seed harvest the whole plant and hang upside down to dry over a sheet or canvas. Shake seeds out when they turn black... Can be grown in a garden bed for best control. Reproduce by seed only. PM me if interested.

I'm not sure how this marketplace can operate within Avalon....

I do, the marketplace can be used not for buying or selling but simply for posting links or give the search term for the product without link to good deals on healthy products, what harm can be done?

For those on a budget and who want to juice the slow way.

VitaPure slowjuicer by Princess.

For those who want to sprout the easy way.

The SPROUTMAN knows what to do.

Why not post the best deals on MMS, Superfoods, Vitamines, Emergency radios? Name the site without link and that would be ok right, all we are doing is helping eachother out extending our budgets, how is that bad?

Has this idea been successful yet? I'm still a provisional member but I love this concept, it's a wonderful way to connect with others & reuse items / trade skills.
Was there a plan to have a sub forum for this? or just this thread..

My uncle is growing a large garden of tabacco and he is very interested in bartering. He is a picker so he likes old stuff.

Not sure about this ever working out...but just wanted to say if I ever were in the market for a dog, I'd go to TargeT, if I could afford art I'd go to Richie Montgomery and/or enfoldedblue (I'm sure there are tons of others here, these are the ones I happened to stumble upon), and if I were to ever buy beaded jewelry (again), I'd go to ulli.

None of these members solicited a thing EVER, I only found out about the wonders they have to offer by accident--their wares are $$$ well spent, IMO....just wanted the word out there...

There are sites like Board Game Geek that operate on the honor system;
in the trading forum you could have "thank you tokens" that are visible and accumulate after successful trades/transactions.

Moderator of that section would have a hard time spotting a scam, maybe, but you know most of our numbers XD.
You can find the average price of many things with a few mouse clicks.

I don't know if my opinion is welcome here,
but my personal reason for supporting the marketplace idea is:
I've seen it work on other sites (MMowned and Ownedcore),
and I would like to get into arts and crafts and this is a good place to get started. lmao.

Ebay hasn't been working out for me. They are like a credit card more than a way to make money.
i end up owing them 200 dollars after the fact and that is why ebay is e*ay.

lol

great idea OP
i hope it happens (if it's meant to)

Just curious - why did this thread peter out?

Hi, Bob: If any thread receives no replies for a couple of days, it slips way down on the NEW POSTS list, and so is much more likely to be ignored or forgotten.

Avalon has 57,400 threads, and most members -- understandably! -- have no idea what or where they are: they're never revisited once they slip below the radar horizon.

Some of those threads are (or were!) really wonderful, and it's a problem. What's really needed is a kind of Avalon Library (which has been discussed many times) -- but it's a gigantic job.

Bob

Thanks Bill

Seems to me then, what we need is for someone(s) to take a review of the Forum, (like I was doing this morning) and look at some of the most AMAZING threads. I was thinking of sayin HEY FOLK ! Take a look over here or over there.. Like these times of SURVIVAL (issues in Colorado for instance), I was looking at living OFF the GRID. I found some great links on BARTER, ALTERNATIVE POWER, FOOD, pure WATER - - -

AVALON is such an amazing resource what can be found is amazing.

Love to see a way for folks to see what has slipped below the CURRENT POSTS. That LIBRARY suggestion sounds wonderful. I bet there are skilled past or current LIBRARIANS out there who know how to do sorting and organizing and may have a suggestion on how to do that with the easiest and/or most efficient without overloading the site's maintainers. I'm not skilled in how to do that.

I just saw some amazing threads that people appear to be missing.

tnx.

Thanks Bobd!

We have been discussing this idea behind the scene and in front for awhile now. We need to push a bit to get this project rolling. Right now there is one volunteer... any more? I am volunteering to coordinate. I think we all recognize that great value of having the AVALON LIBRIARY.

I also would like to think we can get the most important stuff into a hard copy format... wouldn't that be awesome.

So look for a thread called THE AVALON LIBRARY PROJECT...

This is incredible. Just this morning I was thinking about how best to get rid of my books,
most of which are in English, and no one around these parts of Costa Rica who would want them.
And like magic this thread appears.

How about if each person just put the stuff they want to get rid of on a sticky hread, with a photo, and/or description,
with or without a price tag, and the rest of the deal is then conducted via PM.

Then one can always have one's morning coffee while browsing the Avalon flea market....
That could be so nifty.

I think it might be fun to have a marketplace here, lol!
After all, Ebay just banned selling rituals, haha just kidding.

I've wondered before but did not want to ask.
There might be some really fun things to trade, etc.
That's a way to get on watchlists though.

Yikes

eheh- that was the thread name - MARKETPLACE...

YES, I was just adding to the joy of a MARKETPLACE, add a LIBRARY and have a search in it, lets say thing wanting to be bartered, sold, swapped... The database seems to be the key and a sort that we can use where we don't need to guess a keyword (lets say we just dont know what we want to look for but it needs to be more detailed than the general categories that we drill down through).. I'm not sure how to do that visually, but I have seen some pretty knock your sox off 3D type of globes which you can whirl, and the object you are looking for is achievable by drilling through that 3D globe.. its sorta transparent - you navigate through the surface of the globe getting in deeper into the data (visually) on each click... Fascinating to deal with on massive data bases.. Very visually oriented..
