Most of the people who built these when they were trendy have given up now. Lloyd Khan (editor of Shelter and Home) now uses old fashioned stud again, he wont ever go back to them.
They are complicated, expensive and often leak. I have my own experiences trying to waterproof one of these things...

but they do look good, and its a great energy inside one...

How about a single pour, concrete job like what George Greene was doing?

I would love to have a geodesic dome house. Strong as all get out, and good energy quality inside provided you make sure the land has good energy that you are building on.

Bucky Fuller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckminster_Fuller) had more than few good ideas :)
American housing is mostly timber, so yes, there are problems, the steel frame makes many things easier .. architectural authorities on the other hand do not, at least in my neck of woods :)
Not a house, but wonderful usage of principles of geodesic structures :

Thanks, Fredkc! This is very useful info on geodesic homes. I've studied these structures for a while and even found them in garden centres in Britain, as build it yourself packages. All loose parts of the sides of the geometric forms with a cover. Of course these were very small, meant as a greenhouse. There's actually a system for living in a dome, like those of the Eden Project, that provides food, water, inner climate and heating, oxygen even, all for a self sustainable way of living. It includes a fishtank and recycling method, growing vegetables and solar panels, as far as I can remember. Should be on the www somewhere, I think. These structures provide very good shelter in heavy weather conditions too, like poleshifts........ although I hope and pray we won't have to go through such an ordeal. Kind regards and thanks again.

That's no geodesic dome. It's a hobbit's home.

George Green called me the other day. He recommended http://www.monolithic.com for domes. There's another builder out of Florida but I already forgot the name. If my brother can find some land in the country with water, I'm moving out of California!
