Manuel António Gomes, best known as Padre Himalaya. This Portuguese priest, who was also a scientist and inventor, was one of the pioneers in the investigation of solar energy.
His biggest achievement was the Pirelióforo, a device in which thousands of mirrors over a surface of 80 square meters concentrated solar energy up to a temperature of 3500 degrees Celsius: enough to melt most metals and stones. The huge installment was a star in the 1904 Universal Expo of St. Louis, where it won two gold medals.
Himalaya lived in Paris and in Argentina (1927-1932), where he continued his studies and wrote books on Cosmology; and died in 1933 in Portugal. His work is analyzed in both a book by the name A Conspiração Solar do Padre Himalaya - Esboço biográfico dum português pioneiro da Ecologia (The Solar Conspiration of Father Himalaya - Biographic Outline of a Portuguese Pioneer in Ecology), and a documentary by Jorge António by the name A Utopia do Padre Himalaya (Father Himalaya’s Utopia).

The Portuguese first hydrogen powered car is already on the slopes. Created by a group of students from the Instituto Superior Técnico, missing only the last test for the big race cars greener.
Over the next 6 and May 7, will compete against the best in the world at the Shell Eco-Marathon in Germany.
It is the last trip of Hidrogenist before heading to the racing world eco-friendly cars at the German circuit.
Hidrogenist is the Portuguese name of the first prototype powered by hydrogen, a project that was born in the classrooms of the IST.
Breeders? 28 students who have put the machine in the service of imagination to create a competitor to match the best in the world.
In partnership with Air Liquide developed a system powered by hydrogen, which makes this vehicle a totally green car.
Quiet and clean, makes more than a thousand miles on the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. It is only a prototype, but a project that may be the cars of the future.
On wheels is the participation in the big race: expected to win for this edition.

• IEA 2004 Report on H2 & FC Review of National R&D Programs:
o Portugal – implemented a €4 million project financed by the National Program
PEDIP II, directed towards the implementation of an infrastructure for the
research and demonstration of low temperature PEMs and new materials for
components. This project also aimed at inducing commercialisation in the
industrial sector by disseminating emerging technologies, validating components
and demonstrating a prototype of a fuel cell.
o Project PRO-H2. In this project, a low temperature hydrogen producing process
is studied using chemical hydrides (binary and complex) as producing agents
with high volumetric efficiency, able to compete with available storage options
such as compression and liquefaction. The project involves: the production of
hydrogen from binary and complex hydrides; synthesis and characterization of
suitable catalyst; study of reaction kinetics; reactor project and construction; and,
potential recycling of reaction products. The project has participation from INETI,
IST, INEGI and SRE and is funded at €981,000.
