Libyan Islamist leader Ahmed Abu Khattala denied any role in the attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans last month in an interview with AFP on Thursday.

A series of US media reports had implicated Abu Khattala. One published on Wednesday, citing anonymous Libyan officials and witnesses, identified him as a commander involved in the deadly September 11 assault on the US consulate in Libya's second city Benghazi.

Abu Khattala, who led the Obeida Ibn Jarrah Brigade during the bloody uprising that toppled and killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi last year, vehemently denied the allegations in an interview with AFP.

"The report is a lie and all its contents are fabricated, baseless and lacking any credibility," he said.

"Some claim I have left Benghazi and fled the country but, as you can see, talking to me in my house, this is not true.

"There are no new developments on the subject of the US consulate," he said, adding that the reports reflected interests.

"What we can say is that a group of people came out to demonstrate and the guards tasked with protecting the consulate opened fire. US offers $12 mn for Iran-based Al-Qaeda financiers

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States posted a reward of up to $12 million on Thursday for help in tracking down two Iran-based Al-Qaeda financial backers, accused of funneling money to extremists in Syria.

The State Department named the men as Muhsin al-Fadhli and his deputy Adel Radi Saqr al-Wahabi al-Harbi, saying both "facilitate the movement of funds and operatives through Iran on behalf of the Al-Qaeda terrorist network."

"Al-Qaeda elements in Iran, led by Fadhli, are working to move fighters and money through Turkey to support Al-Qaeda-affiliated elements in Syria," the department said in a statement.

"Fadhli also is leveraging his extensive network of Kuwaiti jihadist donors to send money to Syria via Turkey."

Fadhli, 31, was among the few Al-Qaeda leaders who was given advance notice that the group planned to strike the United States on September 1, 2001.

He is also alleged to have raised money to fund the October 2002 attack on the French ship MV Limburg off the coast of Yemen in which one person was killed, and four crew members injured.

"Fadhli reportedly has replaced Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil (better known as Yasin al-Suri) as Al-Qaeda's senior facilitator and financier in Iran," the statement said, offering up to $7 million for information on his location.

Fadhli is on Saudi Arabia's most wanted list after a series of Al-Qaeda attacks in the Gulf kingdom.

Harbi, 25, a Saudi national, was put on the Saudi list in 2011 charged with traveling to Afghanistan to join Al-Qaeda and providing Internet support to the group. just ran across another story, FBI picked up a tape from the embassy cameras showing everything that happened last week, but, a Drone was over the Embassy for the last hour of the attack.

the local Libyans serving for a contractor providing security at the consulate were urged in the days before the attack to not show up to work on Sept. 11.

U.S. intelligence officers knew of four suspects within 24 hours of the attack that had links to Ansar al-Sharia, a local jihadist organization with some ties to al Qaeda’s regional affiliate for north Africa...

It was what it was first reported to be, but the facts have been hijacked by politics. From Obama's side, if it was not an organised terror attack how do you identify who to kill as retaliation? From Romney's side, whatever happened will be used as proof to attack Obama and call him a liar.

Libyan suspect in U.S. envoy attack killed in Cairo

(Reuters) - A Libyan militant suspected by Egypt of involvement in last month's attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya has been killed during a raid by Egyptian security forces in Cairo, a security official said on Thursday.

The Libyan was killed on Wednesday in a raid targeting him and other militants with suspected links to al Qaeda in Cairo's eastern district of Nasr City, the official said. Four Egyptian militants were detained in the operation, he added.

The Libyan, identified as Karim Ahmed Essam el-Azizi, was killed by a bomb he had tried to use against the security forces during the raid, the security official said...

It was not immediately clear what role Azizi had played in the assault on the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on September 11, in which the ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans were killed.

The security official, who asked not to be named, said Azizi had been living in a rented apartment in Nasr City for the past three months. He said police had found 15 bombs and various weapons, including assault rifles, in the Libyan's flat.

The attack on the Benghazi consulate has become a highly politicised issue in the U.S. presidential election campaign.

It occurred during a wave of Muslim protest over an anti-Islam film produced in California, which also sparked violence against U.S. diplomatic missions in Tunisia and Egypt.

However, official emails obtained by Reuters showed that the White House and State Department were advised two hours after the consulate attack that an Islamist militant group had claimed responsibility.

President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials have acknowledged that the attack was a "terrorist" act by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathisers.

A number of Egyptian political figures were on a list of assassinations planned by members of a recently-arrested terrorist cell, Egypt’s daily al-Youm al-Sabea reported on Friday, citing top security officials.

Egypt’s security forces on Thursday announced the arrest of four Egyptian militants, described as being the members of a terrorist cell, in a raid targeting suspects with links to al-Qaeda in Cairo’s eastern district of Nasr City.

Three others suspected of belonging to the same terrorist cell have been arrested in the Egyptian governorates of Gharbiya and Alexandria, a report by Egypt Independent said. Sources were quoted by the daily as saying that the suspects were in possession of firearms, and were currently being interrogated...
