I, Robot.
Unless we know the nature of our minds, and understand our habitual patterning (programming) we are merely biological robots...however, we can upgrade, or break out of the programme!
If we look, we will notice that we act and react a certain way: we hold an idea about ourselves and our surroundings. The deepest level of this programming is: I am. This immediately created a duality - I and am.
At an ordinary level we say, I am this or that, and I feel this or that. Once the 'I am' is established it can be added to and embellished, as pure awareness has been obscured.
At the level of 'I am', we are saying, I am being: 'being' became active and found an identity, instead of merely being. The moment 'being' finds an identity, programming can begin, and from this habitual patterning we get a personality type, a caricature! We just have to read or hear someone's name and a mechanical response just occurs.
Letting go of I is really letting go of everything.
'I am' is still in the realm of mind, of consciousness. Mind/consciousness can have clarity, but it is still conceptual, and therefore can be influenced by outside forces...psychologist programmers!
We can de-program ourselves, after all we set up the program. Programmers merely latch on to our self identification and give it a boost - making us more reactive, and therefore easier to control.
The reaction is OUR creation.
As to the programmer, we merely have to note their input, and not respond, not comply. As long as we know we have enough and do not need more thank you, then we are on the road to freedom. Psychologists know (nearly) every trick to get us to comply - they even know about meditation, but they do not know the heart of meditation.
To know the nature of your mind just takes practice.
Control your mind, before someone does it for you!
Meditation it's good to know
Still practising,
Tony

So much is conditioned behaviour, even on this forum many opinions and reactions are not our own. Its like we get rid of one operating system and then take on another and perform another role, our opinions easily predicted as we conform to the actions and opinions of how we believe an 'awakened' person would behave. We leave one herd mentality to join another
The thread title reminded me of the Marina andthe Diamonds song 'I am not a robot'
Better to be hated than to be loved for what you are not
I'm vulnerable, I'm vulnerable
I am not a robot
You're loveable, so loveable
But you're just troubled
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Can you teach me how to feel real?
Can you turn my power on?
Well, let the drum beat drop
Guess what? I'm not a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot

Hello Dorje ZZ
Thanks - I haven't heard that song before.
I really love the line
Better to be hated than to be loved for what you are not. It's taken me 55 years on this earth to be able to say that I'm just beginning to understand what that means....:thumb:

Being vulnerable is taking down the defence set up by our self programming....it can feel a little uncomfortable and exposed, but at least we get to taste of how things really do feel.
The emotions feel stronger, but that brightens the mind. If we can use that brightness as wise energy, and not mechanically retaliate...we can break out of the programming.
It's a fine line we tread, in not alienate others and to keep (find) our sanity. Being part of a society means following certain conventions, but there comes a time when we have to draw a line or be very skilful.
I had a chinese tai-chi teacher, who said that Buddhism was banned were he live. So people did tai-chi...(mindfulness training) right under the officials nose!
Being human we are naturally non conformists, inventive and potentially enlightened. There is a spontaneous presence in all of us!

What benefit is mindfulness if one does not recognise that each sensation of reaction is changing: An Impermanent flux

Mindfulness is only a stepping stone, to remember awareness. From awareness, then there is the awareness of awareness, and that awareness lead to emptiness, and the emptiness of emptiness...pure essence.
So simple mindfulness can take us all the way...as long as we drop mindfulness! As mindfulness refines, there is less doing and more being.
As Frank Sinatra says, Do be do be do, be do be do beee...! I have no idea why I just said that!

Ok so its from the realms of Sci Fi fantasy. But George Lucas drew a lot from the writings of Joseph Campbell who I have great respect and of course Eastern mysticism. A lot of Avalonians take their avatar names from its mythology.
It connects with the thread theme because he turns the auto pilot off to feel the force.
REMEMBER THE FORCE WILL BE WITH YOU, ALWAYS!

All our lives those around us, wanted us to conform into their robotic state. It makes them feel secure to conform, little do they understand that they are totally ****ed up!
We also have been totally ****ed up. Now it is time to empathise and be kind to others, to help them get un****ed up!
Yours - trying not to ****up ;) -
