I have just started a juicing fast 4 days ago.....loving it but have many questions. After watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, it took me a few weeks to get motivated but I have jumped in to the deep end of the juice river and am feeling great.

If anyone has tips, recipes, success stories perhaps we could share them here.

I am trying to find a new juicer, my one is a cheapy on loan so anyone who has a juicer they love (or hate) please share.

I am trying to do a 60 day juice fast....so far I have cheated with a little juice of the barley , and the odd handful of seeds or nuts, but in 4 days I have lost 5 lbs. I plan on losing 50...the health benefits and energy boost are bonus!

hiya! i did a juice fast for a full week then onto juicing and salads then chicken or fish dinner with veg a month or so ago then crumbled back into old ways due to an all weekend birthday and also realised how inefficient my juicer was.. after much research this http://www.ukjuicers.com/matstone-6-in-1-juicer-ivory is the juice i want to get, single auger, barely oxidises the juice and leaves very dry pulp.. super efficient and reasonable price :)... i felt buzzing when i was juicing and lost about 7 pounds, hardly any alcohol and no caffeine... thanks for reminding me to get back on the case!!

i did jason vales, juice master diet - can send u a pdf if u want it? in the end i just combined all the juices into one mega juice :becky:

all organic where poss: lime, apples, pineapple, cucumber, carrot, celery, beetroot, courgette
(sometimes), wheatgrass powder, spirulina powder, pea protein powder (i recommend), acidophilus, kale, spinach, water cress, alfalfa sprouts and celery... i think that was it... and i just ate the avocados, some nuts and bananas separately...

good luck, is great :)

Earth Angel, kudos to you!

I have juiced off and on for many years, and have found it one of the best things I've ever done for my health.

I have a Braun juicer that's been a workhorse for nearly 15 years. I think it may be nearing the end though, and I'm looking at other juicers too.

Here's a page that explains the difference kinds of juicers:
http://juicerrecipesnow.com/how-to-choose-the-best-juice-extractor-juicer-machine-for-you/

The Breville has a good reputation, and is the one used in the video series 100 day juice feast on youtube. Here's a link to day one.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMsfPoF2PCE

It may be helpful to you, as you go along.

Good luck -- I'm with you!

thanks DBCD .... I am putting all the fruits and veggies you have mentioned but haven't added any powders yet....want to get some wheatgrass too.......so far i feel great but have to admit I have had beer every night......I feel like when I have gone through a whole day without food (as I type this my daughter is eating chips!).....at the end of the day I feel like I deserve a beer......sometimes I figure make major changes but some things why give them up when you know that's not a lifestyle change you are going to stick with......ie I know I love my beer on the weekend so I need to find a way of eating that gets me to a weight I am comfortable with while enjoying beers on the weekend.

I have an Omega Juicer and I love it. It is a single auger, slow speed juicer that does a good job extracting juice from a really wide variety of fruits and vegetables. It doesn't extract as much juice on hard vegetables, like carrots, as do the high speed smash and strain types, but it does a far far better job on things like tomatoes and softer things. It will also juice wheat grass. It is relatively (and by that I mean it's not a real pain) easy to clean up. It is a good all round juicer, but it's a little pricey. I've had it for a couple of years and I have to say it's been a workhorse for me.

I have to say that a mix of carrots and kale with a little ginger is one of my favorites. I don't know if anyone else does this or not, but I also like to juice alfalfa sprouts with carrots and kale.

Thanks Conchis......that is one of the juicers I am considering. I really like the look of the Vert 350 model , as you can drop big chunks in and don't have to use the plunger.
I am juicing so many things together at one time they are all starting to taste the same.....I think I am muddying the flavour with too many things at once....but I am trying to get as much leafy greens and then some carrots or parsnips and always some fruit to take the flavour up a little....I am not sure I am enjoying the ginger, I juiced alfalfa sprouts last night with a whole mess of other stuff. My juicer is not great but its doing the trick so far.

Thank you Marianne for those links......I guess $300 or $400 is not that much to spend if you think of the investment in your health which will quickly pay for itself with the money saved on pizza or dinners out, and if I really take to this as I am hoping I do, I can always purchase the other type eventually.....I have heard die hard juicers often have two or three different types to use depending on what they are making.

Our original $15 yard sale juicer broke, so we bought this one (http://www.amazon.com/LEquip-306150-Mini-Ejection-Juicer/dp/B0000DDVN4/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1350418163&sr=1-1&keywords=L%27Equip+306150+600-Watt+Mini+Pulp-Ejection+Juicer%2C+Gray) with a 10 year warranty after reading lots of reviews online. I believe the Breville models like Joe uses only have a 90 day warranty. Of course - you will have to spend more for the non-centrifugal juicers.

Some of our fav recipes are:

4 apples
3 carrots
4 celery

Joe's juice
6 kale leaves
1 cucumber
4 celery
2 apples
1/2 lemon
1" ginger

Cabala
5 lbs Carrots
2 red Apples
1 medium Beetroot
2 green Apples
1 whole Lemon
2 yellow Apples

Some of my favorite everyday juice recipes:

Morning Juice
1 bunch celery stalks
1 whole pineapple, peeled
1-2 cucumbers (peel if waxed)

This is a good one for morning, somewhat sweet and provides good energy, but is light tasting too. This makes about a quart, and I sip it throughout the morning.

Golden Enzyme Juice
1 pineapple, peeled
5-6 carrots, scrubbed but not peeled
1" slice of peeled ginger

Great if you have digestive trouble. Also great if you don't, it's delicious!

Lemon Sherbet
6 Golden Delicious apples
1 lemon, peeled (organic if possible)

Makes enough for a single small drink.
This one I adapted from a recipe on youtube, but don't recall the name. If anyone knows, I will credit them.

Earth Angel, it's true, when you consider your juicer is something you will use often, maybe daily, and it will last for years, $300-$400 is an investment.

Albativo, your juice recipes look great -- I will give them a try. Thanks.

love all the fruit juices above........I am having a fruit smoothie in the morning with

Strawberries
Banana
1 egg
2 oz Kefir

lunch and dinner loads of leafy greens (spinach, chards, bok choy) and then broccoli, peppers, ginger, parsnip, carrots, whatever I feel like grabbing...bought radishes but haven't had the nerve to try them yet.....never ate one in my life lol

Pineapple is really great in either fruit or veggie mixes

Good thread!!!
:)

Ingredients:
2 Bananas
4 oranges
1 lemon
1 grapefruit
1 tea spoon of honey

You get around 800ml of juice ...
Or about 3 large American coffee cups...(each is 250ml at least in Europe)

I found that Banana is an awesome taste filler in any combo.

Second formula is:

1 banana
1 cup of choc milk
handful of dry:
apricots,plums.

You can put powdered nuts in (walnut, peanut...)
Either buy it in powder or make it powder physically.

;)

A question:

what is the good vegetable natural source of good protein for this mixes we`re talking about?
Exclude soy and anything connected with it...

Thanks!

Beren, I've found rice protein is a good alternative to soy. It is easier to digest.

I recently purchased a VRT 350HD & am very happy with it, its quiet and sounds like a horse eating when you feed it carrots (don't know why, but it always makes me smile,, I paid $400 to have someone chew my food for me! haha)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/zTargeTz/IMG_1405.jpg

I've been pretty un-creative, sticking mostly with this juice recipe:

6 kale leaves
1 cucumber
4 celery
2 apples
1/2 lemon
1" ginger

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/zTargeTz/IMG_1406.jpg

or variants of that; I figured too much fruit would be very high in sugar so I have avoided fruit juice mixes (except for a couple of times just for a treat) is that incorrect?

I also shoot for the darkest green leafy veggies, though maybe my ideas are wrong here (LOTS of kale.. L O T S.... haha)

My dogs love the "pulp" that is left over, I've considered adding eggs to them and baking them on low temp for dog treats.

I am starting my juice fast today (birthday present to me!), Earth Angel is my inspiration!

Happy Birthday Target :cheer2:

I have to admit I have juicer envy! I think that is the one I am going to get. Love the description of the horses eating carrots!

I agree Kale is amazing........I put a variety of leafy greens and add whatever else I want, tomatoes, parsnip, carrot, avocado (which it seems you CANT juice lol) peppers, and then add some apples or pineapple (really good) .....but I often fine the end result regardless of what I make and the various colours, is almost the same tasting.......I wish fruit was the way to lose weight! now they taste amazing.

Love this.......Kale, your new friend with benefits !

Kudos! I was inspired by the same vid and instead of buying a juicer (Have one in storage buried in a box somewhere in the storage space) I bought a Blendtec 4 inch blade blender. Thought Id get all the fiber as well. Doesnt work. The mean green drink in the blender fluffs up to at least a quart and is totally over run by the kale. Truly horrible. Could do 10 oz of juice but never a quart of terrible tasting green pudding.

The juicer I have - somewhere - is a Champion. Its footprint is huge and it weighs a ton to lug around in the kitchen (You juice at the edge of the sink with a bowl in the sink catching the fiberous stuff.) Anyway, it does the job and lasts forever. Juicing Celery is a pain as you have to keep cleaning it as the long fivers wrap around the screw and stop the machine.

If you want to consume kale but not juiced, you can cut it yp, put some olive oil on it, spread it out on a baking sheet in a hot oven for 10 minutes and PRESTO Kale chips! Delicious!
Good luck to you.

I can't see how it's bad for em, plus it's "economical", better than throwing it away ;)

They seem excited at first and then drop off a bit, she only ate maybe half what I gave her before losing interest.

A big part of why I spent as much as I did on my juicer is that it doesn't heat the juice (as supposedly this robs a lot of nutrients) so while this may be tasty, I'm not so sure if it's the best method of consumption.

it doesn't like whole pieces of celery (the fibers clog a bit), that kinda goes for anything that's fibrous, I just chop it a little and it's good to go (it also helps if you run something fibrous then follow it with a bit of carrot, carrots clean it out fast); I haven't found any issues with fruit at all (though I haven't tried avocados yet).

Clean up is probably 3 min under hot water with the included toothbrush pretty quick and easy if you ask me, but I don't have anything to compare it with.

over all I can't think of a better juicer; but again, I don't have much to compare with.

We own a Breville Juice Fountain Compact (http://www.brevilleusa.com/beverages/juicers/juice-fountain-compact.html), and it is bad to the bone. A really great machine, efficient, and easy to clean. We have found that there are no mistakes in juicing. We combine whatever is around the house or in the garden. And I would have to adamantly disagree about sweet fruits. There is noting better than mixing all types of fruit, especially the sweet ones! My favorite is apple and kiwi juiced together.

I have the following Omega Juicer: Omega Single Gear (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-J8005-Single-Gear-Commercial-Masticating/dp/B0002OKDT2)
I make a few things with it. I buy a bushel of Apples, and over a day I juice half of it and have a nice couple pitchers of good apple juice. You have to take your time because the machine shouldn't be run continuously for longer than 30 minutes as the motor will heat.

I also put the following together no particular recipe, just whatever I have of the list but always with 1 - 2 apples and carrots to help move the food through the machine:
Apples
Carrots
Celery
Cilantro(good for cleaning kidneys)
Red Cabbage
Green Cabbage
Lettuce
Collard greens
Spinach
Mustard greens
Cucumber

All delicious

Plus I have a NINJA blender and I puree fruit with ice cream(so delicious) and also make some good guacamole.

I think the point is that sugar is sugar is sugar and sugar is poison to the human body. Sugars feed bad bacteria, whose colonies overtake the colonies of beneficial bacteria. Disease and death ensue. No, a little bit won't end it all for us, but do use only small amounts for flavor.

That's a good point. I am in no way living on a diet of juiced fruit. It makes for a great treat or dessert, in moderation. Also, I forgot to mention, the Breville does a great job of collecting the leftover fiber. The chickens really love it.

okay I have completed one week of juicing.....meant to keep it to a complete juice fast but have to confess, at night I find I am sick of cleaning the juicer and I am sick of the taste of green ! and I am starving so I have had a beer or two almost every night.....I like to think of it as barley juice.....and also a small handful of unsalted trail mix......wow did that taste good! so after 7 days I have lost 6 lbs. Its the weekend so its going to be more difficult as friends want to meet at the pub for dinner.....told them I am juice fasting but will have some pints! I am not a purist on this by any means, and wonder if the introduction of alcohol is undoing the whole detox which I think is the key to others having much greater weight loss in a week.

Congrats and good health to you, Earth Angel! I just discovered this thread and plan to read all the posts. I just read where cost is a concern. For about six months, that's what stopped me. But I figured that I'm not eating a variety of vegetables because I'm lazy. Also, it's about prevention, and quality life. I’m going to be around for a long time. So those were the rationales I used to spend the extra money. Like the hair color commercial: "I'm worth it".

A couple of things I’ve added to my health regimen are:

Morguana's thread: "Liver detox (from av1) (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?6528-Liver-detox--from-av1-)" AND Ilie Pandia posted his journey (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?6528-Liver-detox--from-av1-&p=567854&viewfull=1#post567854). It convinced me to go for it. This link you'll see the before and after pictures. I’m in the middle of my 6th detox.

- Hurom Juicer which is a masticating juicer that retains all the vitamins, minerals and enzymes. I purchased the stainless steel model, so the carrots don’t stain it. With a masticating juicer you juice things like kale, spinach, beets, and even make almond juice.

A favorite of mine is called the “Avocado Ginger Detox Juice”.

1 green apple
1 avocado (peeled)
4 carrots
1” fresh ginger root

(The avocado makes it creamy.)

thanks WCBD, glad to see you here! I have tried avocado in my juicer and I don't think its actually working, so now I use it in my blender with fruit instead.
thanks for the juice recipe and you are right, we have to say we are worth it.....also like you I had a very hard time getting in the veggies and fruits , this is amazing, Ive never consumed so many veggies in my life in one day (or one week!).......I have a series of bumps all over my body (lumps of some fatty deposit, which I had even as a thinner younger much more attractive woman ;) )
and one in particular on my cheek bone......I am not positive yet but after one week I think it is smaller!! will keep an eye on this.
Where did you get your juicer?? amazon seems a good spot , this one looks much like the Omega 8006 ??
thanks and look forward to hearing more from you

and 10 minutes later......
just watched that youtube and its amazing, you've really helped me with my decision, her's looks like soooooooo much less work, his is a work out, no wonder he has muscles..... I am guessing her Horum is very similar to the Vert 350 by Omega?? anybody know?

This is another thing I've added to my health and beauty regimen. I'm over 6 month with the distilled water. I didn't add it above because it was off topic for juicers but on topic for health benefits:

Connecting with Sauce's thread: "Taking the piss: Your own best medicine… (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?1793-Taking-the-piss-Your-own-best-medicine...&p=16045&viewfull=1#post16045)" Don't let the title stop you from checking the thread out. Distilled Water is a substitute.

sigma6's thread: Water of Life and HIdden in Plain Sight (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?45979-Water-Of-Life-Hidden-In-Plain-Sight&p=500599&viewfull=1#post500599) I drink the water only. I've also added a rough transcript with the vid. There is another site on the forum, too. I did notice that you've visited it.

I'd encourage you to check out comments such as models, cost and links. I’m over the 6 month mark. The skin discolorations are both subsiding and disappearing, and no new marks appear. Which is unusual in the summer time.

Best Juicers

http://bestjuicermachinereviews.org - savemoney coupon $15

The Hurom was a masticating juicer, therefore it keeps the enzymes in the juice, so that i can lose weight. It is easy to clean. And is recommended by the leading authority on health, Mike Adams, who runs the great natural health site naturalnews.com.
In addition, the Hurom slow Juicer was awarded the best juicer by the “Bon Appetite Magazine” and was featured in other articles in “Oprah Magazine”. I also saw that CBS showcased the Hurom as the best juicer by their medical doctor, Dr. Frank.

http://juicersgalorestore.com
Only a masticating juicer will keep all the vitamins and minerals in the juice. Lab reports have found that the Hurom Juicer produces healthy juice with 40% more vitamin C and 60% more Vitamin A then the other less expensive centrifugal brands. Also, you will save money in the long term using the Hurom Juicer because you will use 1/3 less vegetables to make the same amount of juice. All the extra vitamins and minerals in the juice will detoxify your body of harmful chemicals, radiation and allow you to look healthier and younger. And yes, many people use the Hurom Slow Juicer for the Gerson Diet , health challenges and for juice fasting.

"Housecleaning & Withdrawal Symptoms"

“Food and Healing: How what you eat determines your health, your well-being, and the quality of your life,” by: Annemarie Colbin

pg. 214 - “...The healing process itself often becomes manifest in certain general physical withdrawal symptoms. Because these can sometimes be mistaken for symptoms of illness, it is important to know of them in advance.”

pg. 216 - Michio Kushi has classified signs of such “housecleaning” by the body into ten precise categories of symptoms:

- General fatigue
- Headache
- Pains and aches
- Fever, chills, and coughs
- Abnormal sweating and frequent urination
- Skin discharges and unusual body odors
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Temporary decrease in sexual desire and vitality
- Temporary cessation of menstruation
- Mental irritability
- Other minor transitory symptoms: restless dreams, minor hair loss, feeling of coldness

pg 216 - “...some of these will be experienced by each individual, and the healthier his or her general condition, the fewer symptoms there will be. The symptoms are also characteristically transitory, sometimes lasting only a few hours or maybe days. Steady and extensive physical activity will speed up the cleansing process which is why all effective dietary regimes include exercise.”

pg. 218 - “...if your symptom is on the list, (see above) and you feel OK about it, it’s a healing reaction. Or you can consider a very helpful concept about the nature of healing symptoms noted by practitioners of homeopathy: They have found that discharge symptoms in the healing mode tend to follow a specific order, or progression, namely:

Symptoms move from the inside to the outside of the body (mucus in the lungs is coughed up; toxic matter from deep within the system comes out as boils or rashes).

Symptoms move from the upper part to the lower part of the body (medication that affects the kidneys, such as steroids, can be discharged by a rash on the legs.)

Symptoms relating to chronic conditions disappear in the reverse order of their appearance; the ones that emerged latest leave first and the earlier ones reemerge and then leave last. This means that long after we set out on a healing path, we might relieve symptoms of very old problems if these were suppressed or incorrectly treated. Their reemergence (sometimes known as retracing), if treated naturally and allowed to follow its course, would only mean that the body is healing itself. For example, if you used to cough a lot as a child and took medicine and then developed asthma, when you go into a healing mode, you may have a brief flare-up of the asthma, and later - even several years later - have a coughing episode that is in fact a “retracing” of your childhood condition.

The foregoing three rules comprise “Hering’s Law of Cure,” after Constantine Hering (1800-1880), who formulated them. To these, John Garvy, N.D., has added two more:

- A feeling of well-being precedes a healing crisis.
- There is also a feeling of well-being at the core during the crisis; that is, deep down inside it feels OK.

I'm on about day 4 of juice fast (I've also been a bit less diligent than possible) though at least 85% of my intake is juice (damn you barley juice!) I've been pretty tired lately, sleeping a lot & feeling colder than usual (but it's Alaska... so I figure that's normal)

Anyone know the "shelf life" of juice? is it ok to make a couple days worth at one time? it seems logically best to make it & drink it but that's not very convenient for my work schedule so I make 2 days worth at a time usually & just keep it in nalgene bottles &/or a large pitcher in the fridge.

thanks everyone........want to respond to TargeT on the juice time storage.......my research (not experience) says 24 hours max is best and to fill up a container that will hold ONE serving to the very top and put a tight lid on..ie a mason jar filled to the brim ....or you start the oxidation process.......so once you open the contain (kept in fridge or on ice) you want to drink it all.

Thanks Paul and Paula for the links above, I will have a look at them when I am not stealing time from my employer (husband) ; )

“Basic Macrobiotics,” by: Herman Aihara

This post seems out of context so, post #44 (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?50959-JUICING-Share-tips-recipes-success-stories-health-benefits-or-ask-s&p=571295&viewfull=1#post571295) is my attempt to make this clearer.

How to Balance Yin and Yang - Page 28

Yin foods have a tendency to cool the body, loosen muscles, reduce tension, slow down movement, prolong sleeping time, and cause excretion to be loose and have less color. If eaten in excess for you condition they make you tired, cause anemia, paleness, loss of appetite, and slowness in speaking. If you have a yin condition, eating an excess of yin foods will make it worse.

Yang goods have a tendency to warm the body, tighten muscles, cause tension speed up movement, lessen sleeping time, and cause excretion to be harder and darker, When taken in excess they can cause fever, a reddish face, constipation, and rapid speech.

In terms of our mentality, yin foods tend to cause yin emotions and thinking such as fear, suspicion, sentimentality, worry and resentment. Yang foods cause such yang emotions and thinking as hostility, aggressiveness, noisiness, and ruthlessness.

Acid-Forming and Alkaline-Forming Foods - Page 29-30

All foods can be divided into yin and yang according to Oriental philosophy, and into acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods according to Western science. When we combine these two concepts we get four basic categories of food. The foods in each group are ordered from the most yin item within the category to the most yang.

- Yin Alkaline-forming: honey, coffee, herb tea, spices, fruits, seeds, most vegetables, some beans.
- Yin Acid-forming: chemical drugs, pills, sugar, candy, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, some beans, nuts
- Yang Alkaline-forming: Bancha tea, dandelion tea, lotus root, burdock root, sesame salt, soy sauce, miso, umeboshi, salt
- Yang Acid-forming: grains, fish, cheese, chicken, pork, beef, eggs

Our body fluids - blood, inter-cellular and cellular liquids - must remain in a slightly alkaline state in order for us to maintain health. Therefore when we eat acid-forming foods, such as animal foods, it is important to balance them with alkaline-forming foods. We also need to be conscious of the balance of yin and yang at the same time. For example, in Japan fish (yang, acid) is traditionally served with grated daikon radish or ginger (yin, alkaline). Foods in category I balance well with foods from category IV, and foods in category II complement the foods in category III.

One should note, however, that extreme yin acid-forming items, such as psychedelic and medicinal drugs and sugar, are too yin and much too acid-forming to be balanced with any alkaline-forming food or condiment.

”I am sick of the taste of green ! and I am starving so I have had a beer or two almost every night.....I like to think of it as barley juice.....and also a small handful of unsalted trail mix......wow did that taste good!...I am not a purist on this by any means, and wonder if the introduction of alcohol is undoing the whole detox which I think is the key to others having much greater weight loss in a week.

are you telling TargeT and I to give up the Barley Juice WhiteCrowBlackDeer??? ;)

question for juicers.......why do they all taste the same?? it seems no matter what combination I end up with a very similar taste and I have to say on day 8 I am not loving the taste.....except my strawberry banana smoothie (which I know is not a juice).......but the others I put various combinations of
kale
cucumber
spinach
cauliflower
ginger (blech)
celery
apple
melon
swiss chard
broccoli
beets
tomato
carrot
parsnip
raddish
turnip

and probably some I have forgot but to me they all basically taste the same......I watch all the juicing video's and they take a sip and go MMMMMMMMmmmm........yea right, its a lot like drinking grass and mud lol

Is it because I add too many different veggies per drink?

I saw that Target was cold, and it reminded me of this information a got at the “Kushi Institute,” Kiental, Switzerland, for “Lifestyle and Cooking” certification. Part of it was on the energetics of food. But, really, there are tons of books and even some material online now. Post #42 was just a small example of types of foods. Our bodies expend energy to bring it back into balance. If we are always out of balance then we drain our energy reserves and symptoms surface. One type of eating causes an imbalance of emotional and physical states.

An example of how the body tries to compensate is when you have popcorn and soda at the movies. Or someone that has a typical American breakfast, to bring the body back to center from the yang bacon and eggs the body naturally wants coffee with milk and sugar and/or juice.

Nothing wrong with these foods, but if you eat them all the time without including yin types of foods then it comes out in your emotions and the physical body. For example: lots of salty foods soy sauce, miso, lots of grains, fish, cheese, chicken, pork, beef, eggs, causes an imbalance.

So over time the body is in an extreme state and experiences: 1) yang emotions and thinking, i.e, hostility, aggressiveness, noisiness, and ruthlessness. 2) yang physiology, i.e, tighten muscles, which cause tension, speed up movement, lessen sleeping time, constipation, and rapid speech. If you have a yang condition, eating an excess of yang foods will make it worse.

Whereas yin foods like: honey, coffee, herb tea, spices, fruits, seeds, most vegetables, some beans, chemical drugs, pills, sugar, candy, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, nuts, there’s nothing wrong with these foods, but if you eat them all the time without including yang foods then it comes out in your emotions and the physical body.

So over time the body is in an Yin extreme and experiences: 1) yin emotions and thinking, i.e., such as fear, suspicion, sentimentality, worry and resentment. 2) yin physiology, i.e., cool/cold body, loosen muscles, reduce tension, slow down movement, prolong sleeping time, tired, anemia, paleness, loss of appetite, and slowness in speaking. If you have a yin condition, eating an excess of yin foods will make it worse.

tiredness and feeling cold is because your metabolism is being lowered due to the limited food intake. it's "normal" under these conditions but certainly not desirable. what also happens is that your body is now getting the missing proteins it needs for maintenance, building enzymes etc. from your muscles because the juice doesn't contain any complete protein. your muscles are slowly being wasted during the juice fast, so to speak.

I agree the taste isn't mind boggling good, but I do find myself enjoying it (toss a few grapes in, it's amazing how sweet they make it with just a few) I have found that I can easily "chug" juice with no effort; it seems that my body is very accepting of veggie juice even if it's not the taste bud amusement park ride that we are used to from "modern culinary offerings"

Though I've also trained myself to say (out loud) poison after I hear/see sugar/"soda"/candy so maybe I'm self hypnotizing a bit ;)

I have been using grapes, melon or apples to sweeten most of my drinks....lots of kale, spinach, chards, collards......it all tastes the same to me. Last night, on day 11 of the juice fast.... I was taken out to dinner by my daughter who had just returned from a holiday......broke the fast and had a chicken and salad wrap.....and fries......and beer (s) ......according to the juice guru's I will be writhing in uncontrollable pain if I do this but I felt fine and still do this morning.....I only ate half of what I order for fear of repercussions but it was not a problem at all....other than the guilt which is a total waste of emotions! About to juice dinner now, can't wait to not have to chop everything and feed tiny pieces.....this baby just pulls it in and is so fast and quiet!! and as TargeT said it sounds like a horse gently munching !!

G'day fellow Juicers.

My girlfriend and I recently bought this decent cold press juicer that was second hand and within our current price range: http://www.oscar-living-juicer.com/store/juicer-oscar-vitalmax-900-juicer.html

We've been juicing for the last couple of days and having a lot of fun with it! So far we've been whipping up the "mean green" juices and also a couple of fruit combinations. We're currently looking for new mixes to try that include all the beneficial vegetables/fruits but still taste half decent!

Much appreciate the juices already mentioned. If anyone's got any more juices we could try, we'd thoroughly enjoy it! :)

Cheers,
-Jack.

Unfortunately Target is right.......they do all seem to taste the same ........yesterday to try out the new juicer as an afternoon treat, I juiced One large slice of pineapple, one banana, on avocado and two apples.....it was delicious.....if only the good stuff tasted that great!

I am wondering if its because I am putting too many things in per drink....like about 12 different veggies (lots of green) and usually an apple or some pineapple or grapes....no matter the colour they don't taste like V8 that's for sure!

the interesting thing about juicing is that is makes not only the nutrients in plants more bioavailable but also the antinutrients, and in doses no normal human being could consume without a juicer. after all, plants don't want to be eaten, they want to grow, and antinutrients are there to make sure the plants don't get eaten before their time. small amounts are harmless, and plant eaters like cows have the means to counteract these antinutrients, but juicing frees inordinate amounts which are then consumed by humans who are not as adapted, to say nothing of the high fructose content of fruits. juicing may be an easy and tasty way to consume lots of plants or their fruits but natural it is not and such things always create problems in the long run.

I told a friend I was on a juice fast and before she even asked for how long, could be 3 days 10 days, 30 days....she had no idea but the first thing she said is All your teeth are going to fall out!!
I agree that this is not something I would want to do for life, I miss food!! but I am enjoying the feeling of giving my body loads of nutrients that I would never eat in one day.....and you can't argue with the number of people who are off as many as 14 medications after getting into juicing......first a fast to cleanse and then as a way of getting lots of nutrients into their body in combination with a healthy diet.

I am no expert and it seems no matter what diet or way of eating you choose there will be someone who says you are wrong......eat meat, don't eat meat, eat dairy no dairy, juice, no juicing.......I admit I am doing this for a quick weight loss, but will enjoy the health benefits......todays Abraham Hicks message was interesting for me.....

Metabolism is vibrational response to your moment in time. Metabolism is the way the Energy is moving through your body. And so, everything is in response to the way you feel — everything is. Everything is mind over matter. Every disease is mental first. Everything is about thought. Everything is about vibration. Everything is about the way you feel. Practice scenarios that feel good—and never mind reality. Reality is only a brief moment in time that you keep repeating.

Thanks to Paula for reminding me about this thread I started back in October......since we are almost a month past all those New years resolutions, I thought it might be a good time to bring this thread to life again.

My plans to juice for 60 days (as in Fat Sick and Nearly Dead)......ended only about 25 days in, when my husbands birthday had me going out for dinner, planning to go right back to full juicing after the weekend.....that has not happened.

At the moment I am still juicing breakfast every day......fruits, kefir and a raw egg in that mixture.......then I juice a lot of greens and other veggies for lunch and then I eat a some times healthy dinner. So far my weight loss is nothing to get excited about, only 6 lbs. I did lose 10 the first two weeks back in October but with Christmas and plenty of juice of the barley ( beer ) that is now down to 6lbs. However I do feel good. I also bought a distiller in December and am aiming for at least 1 gallon of water per day.

If you research Andrew Norton Webber ( great facebook page too) you will find many testimonials of the benefits of drinking distilled water. I was drinking RO water for the past 16 years so not sure how much of an improvement I will see but will keep you posted.

So again if anyone wishes to share recipes, benefits or ask questions on juicing..... this is the place !

I had a Juiceman Junior which left everything really soggy. I was so inspired by Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead that I got rid of it a couple months ago and bought the Breville juice fountain. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!

I have one question...
Joe doesn't mention anything about fiber when doing the juice fast. Does anyone know anything about this? Do you think fiber is a concern?

Favorite juices (both recipes below are from a couple local juice bars):

Kalekiwi:
1 lime
2-3 green apples
4 kale leaves
1 kiwi

Ginger Pear:
2 apples
2 pears
1 piece of ginger, peeled
a dash of cinnamon
(the juice bar adds a drizzle of honey, but I skip that at home)

Edit:
Second question....
Lots of talk on this thread about juicing bananas and avocados. I didn't think that was possible because of the low water content, and was afraid that it would clog up my juicer. Is it better to juice them or blend?

Earth Angel
3rd February 2013, 21:00
Hi Laurel......those recipes look delicious......I have read that you cant juice avocados and bananas and have tried with the avocado and it is a mess......you just waste a lot .......I blend those with strawberries, yogurt, raw egg and add the orange, pineapple that has been juiced and blend it all together.

I strain my veggie juices of the pulp because I dont like the texture in a drink......I dont find when just drinking juice that it is a problem not having the fiber , ie body functions just fine with all the juice

I still have to go back and read this thread, so this may be something you are already aware of.
I did a 50 day juice fast once that was life changing.
I included some superfoods like bee pollen and Spirulina, which helped a lot.
I worked out for 2 hours or so 3x a week, and that also helped.
It goes without saying that drinking lots of water is essential too.

Hi Laurel,

My understanding is that pulp will begin the digestion process, which hinders/slow the body's cleansing. So it depends on what your goal is. I personally like to work up to juicing by moving slowly over 2-3 weeks into a mostly liquid diet that still includes pulp. Things like smoothies with kefit and spinach, bananas, blueberries, omega oils, etc. all blended up with the fiber. Also blended raw soups/salads (google this -- lots of great recipes). Then finally drinking just juices without pulp. That way you are less likely to get cleansing distress. (headaches, diarrhea, etc.)

Congrats on getting a Breville! Thanks for the recipes, they look yummy. Please post how you're doing if you want to, I'd love to hear.

Onawah, your 50 day fast sounds interesting. I'd love to hear more about it. I've never juiced for that long a time, but I am working up to it.

Unicorn, I'm definitely trying that Mango Lassi! Thank you.

There are some YouTube videos of a couple who did a 100 day juice fast (they called it a juice feast). They posted a video most of the days, and included helpful things like gentle yoga, and herbal extracts to include in the juice. Here is day one. You'll find the next day's video on YouTube, in the right hand column near the top.

An update, inspired by Paula's post in her Family thread (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?54320-We-Are-Family&p=632390&viewfull=1#post632390)

About juicing dense produce like avocados, bananas, and even mangos ... I like to put them in the blender and add juice I've just made in the juicer. The result is more like a smoothie, with lots of juicy nutrition.

If you have a masticating juicer like Paula's, you can put the dense produce right through. I have a centrifugal extractor which removes the pulp (most of it ... I usually strain out the rest) so if I want avocado or banana, I use the blender to process it.

A tip about using pears ... if you juice them, do it when they are still green and hard, and you'll get more juice and less grainy pulp.

Love to everyone.

Thanks for all of this information :). A focus of mine lately is to be better about juicing on a regular basis because I have experienced great benefits from it when I do - less inflamation, pains go away, more energy, better looking skin. I know it is healing to my body. I don't really do sweet fruit juices though because I try to stay away from sugar... even natural fruit sugar. That is what is best for my own body. I was diagnosed with a health issue a few years ago and began to understand how sugar feeds disease. I like to make very green juices and make leafy greens the largest portion.

Just made this which is my favorite… very green and all organic.

Celery
Cucumber
Kale
Spinach
Chard
Collards
Carrots
apple

I use a Greenstar ‘twin gear’ juicer that is probably 8 or 9 years old but great at juicing greens. Some of the newer ones out now that I see on this thread look great and easier to use... may change mine out one of these days though mine is still going strong. I wish mine had a wider 'mouth' - would make it a quicker process.

Some information I ran across today while looking for inspiration that I thought was good…

An entirely Raw Food regimen, without the inclusion of a sufficient quantity and variety of fresh-Raw juices is equally deficient (as a cooked food diet). The reason for this deficiency lies in the fact that a surprisingly large percentage of the atoms making up the nourishment in the Raw Foods is utilized as fuel for energy by the digestive organs in their processes of digesting and assimilating the food, which usually requires as long as 3, 4, or 5 hours after every meal. Such atoms, while furnishing some nourishment to the body, are mostly used up as fuel, leaving only the smaller percentage available for the regeneration of the cells and tissues.

However, when we drink Raw vegetable juices, the situation is entirely different, as these are digested and assimilated within 10 to 15 minutes after we drink them and they are used almost entirely in the nourishment and regeneration of the cells and tissues, glands and organs of the body. In this case the result is obvious, as the entire process of digestion and assimilation is completed with a maximum degree of speed and efficiency, and with a minimum of effort on the part of the digestive system.

Vary your juicing diet as apparently your body soon gets bored and no longer wishes to juice.... ( not my words )

1/2 cucumber
3 spring onions
1" chunk ginger
2 apples
2 pears
2 carrots ( large)
2 cloves garlic
4 sticks celery
1 whole beetroot
5 sprouts ( soaked over night)

Try mixed leaves and different fruits and veges, forget bananas as they will seriously clog your machine.

It matters not what type of juicer you have, just ensure that once juiced you drink asap unless you need to keep a while, store in fridge but use within 4 hours. Add some fresh filtered but adjusted water to ensure you can get it out of a bottle. This works for me and weight loss can be as with me, 1 stone per month. Check yourself and ensure you get all the nutritian you need per day. have a normal but healthy meal, fish is good with a salad.

I worked mine out so well I lost a stone a month and had a beer a day too, lol, some habits are hard to break.

very best of luck with your venture.
