Don't be so easily fooled. In parts of Quito the capital, Ecuadorians are wanting to live the American dream! Huge shopping malls, with shot gun and machine gun totting security. Every bank has high security ( 2-3 armed men) standing out side.
It is not a safe haven.
American gringos are everywhere living the cheap life, and of course pushing the prices up for the locals. This is happening all over the world.
The Americans want 'their' life style in someone else's country, and it is causing tensions.
I went there with my wife to see about living there. We actually went there to meet a man who keeps promoting Vilcabamba, to see what was going on. He ignored us, and just said, "go into town a talk to the locals" we did. There were just Americans sitting around bored, and some back packers... so we came home.
It is a lovely country, but you have to prepared to fend for yourself, and probably like some, get a gun!
