ANCHORAGE, Alaska—Coastal areas of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest are under a tsunami warning after a strong earthquake shook an island off the west coast of Canada.
The U.S. Geological Survey says a 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook the Queen Charlotte Islands area on Saturday night, followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock several minutes later.
The National Weather Service has issued a warning for coastal areas of southern Alaska, Northern California, Oregon and Washington state. It says the warning area includes Craig and Sitka, Alaska.

cbc am radio has coverage right now - they interrupted regular programming - and tsunami warning has been extended to Hawaii
a seismologist said it was the kind of quake that doesn't usually cause a big tsunami (brave guy eh after what happened to the Italian scientists...)
Tofino out on west coast of Vancouver Island is being evacuated along the coast - a wave of 44 cm was noted initially Alaska coast down to Haida Gwai
also 7 or 8 aftershocks - 4.3 to 5.5.

Something doesn't quite make sense to me unless someone is trying to justify their paycheque. That is, they are evacuating people in Hawaii because of 1/2 a foot high waves generated on Canada's West Coast?
Look at the data for yourself and let me know if I am hallucinating:

a seismologist said it was the kind of quake that doesn't usually cause a big tsunami (brave guy eh after what happened to the Italian scientists...)
[...]
This is the reason why that seismologist uttered that statement:
Tectonic Summary
The October 28th, 2012 (October 27 at the location of the epicenter) M 7.7 earthquake south of Masset, Canada, occurred as a result of oblique-thrust faulting near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate moves approximately north-northwest with respect to the North America plate at a rate of approximately 50 mm/yr.
This earthquake is likely associated with relative motion across the Queen Charlotte fault system offshore of British Columbia, Canada. Studies of tectonics in this region suggest plate motions are taken up by strike slip faulting parallel to the plate boundary, accompanied by lesser amounts of thrust motion to accommodate the oblique nature of the plate motion vector between the two plates with respect to the orientation of the main plate boundary fault structure. This oblique component of plate motion may involve either underthrusting of the western edge of the Pacific Plate beneath North America, or be taken up on crustal faults within the North America plate. The October 28th earthquake is consistent with either scenario.
This region of the Pacific:North America plate boundary has hosted 7 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater over the past 40 years – the largest of which was a M 6.6 earthquake in 2009, 80 km to the south east of the 2012 earthquake. In 1949, a M 8.1 earthquake occurred closer to the Pacific:North America plate boundary, likely as a result of strike-slip faulting, approximately 100 km northwest of the October 28th earthquake, near the northern extent of Haida Gwaii region (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands).
**********************************************************
The above simply means that displacements along that fault sytem is mostly horizontal with a very minor vertical component.
It is the vertical component of displacement that causes a tsunami. In the case of the 7.7 EQ of Oct. 28, 2012 at the Haida Gwaii islands, that vertical component wasn't enough to generate a devastating tsunami. Maybe enough to get your ankles wet if standing on a beach at the edge of the normal waves reach.

The map I looked at was not very detailed, but it seemed to me that the quake was on the west side of an island. So perhaps the tsunami danger is greater in Hawaii (a long way to the west) than it is in Canada (a short way to the east, but behind that island.)

True and logical :)
However, look at the height (amplitude) of the generated waves in the close vicinity of the epicenter and on which they are basing their alert and evacuation... what do you think that height will be once 1/2 across the Pacific?

Well, I went and figured out where it was on a map more accurately. The USGS report at M7.7 - 139km S of Masset, Canada 2012-10-28 03:04:10 UTC (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000df7n#summary) places the earthquake at 52.769°N 131.927°W depth=17.5km (10.9mi)
On Google maps, this appears as the point marked below

The nearest point on the Hawaiian island of Maui is 2562 miles to the south-southwest, across some very open ocean.

The same thing if you have a fishing boat. It's safer to head out to sea and steer towards the tsunami, then you might not even notice it, as the sea level only rises. But if you stay ashore the boat might get damaged.

Hawaii Tsunami 'Arriving Now' (Updated)
In the wake of a 7.7 magnitude quake off the Canadian coast, a small tsunami has been detected in Hawaii.
Sun Oct 28, 2012 03:53 AM ET
A tsunami generated by a powerful earthquake in Canada hit the US state of Hawaii late Saturday, an official from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
"The tsunami is arriving right now," Gerard Fryer, a senior geophysicist with the center, told reporters. "It is coming in as we speak."
Television images from the island of Oahu showed relatively small waves peacefully rolling toward the shore.
But Fryer urged Hawaii residents not to deceived by appearances.
"Typically, the first wave is not the largest," he said, adding that subsequent waves could be much larger, resulting in flooding in low-lying areas.
"If the waves are big, the all-clear may take six or seven hours," Fryer said.
The expected arrival time of the tsunami was 10:28 pm local time Saturday (0828 GMT Sunday).
Top Six Ways to Make a Tsunami
The alert came after a major 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Queen Charlotte Islands off the west coast of Canada late Saturday.
The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 8:04 pm (0304 GMT Sunday) was located 139 kilometers (86 miles) south of the town of Masset, the US Geological Survey said.
Numerous aftershocks, some as large as magnitude 4.6, followed the initial quake, Canadian officials reported.
The regional West Coast-Alaska Tsunami Warning Center also issued a regional warning for coasts located near the epicenter of the earthquake.
Emergency officials in British Columbia said a small tsunami had been recorded on a deep ocean pressure sensor, but its effect was not immediately known.
INTERVIEW: Chasing Tsunamis for Science
The officials urged residents in low-lying coastal areas to be alert to instructions from local officials and be prepared to move to higher ground.
"The tsunami alarm went off and everybody went to the evacuation site," Danny Escott, owner of the Escott Sportfishing lodge near Massett, told AFP by telephone.
Natural Resources Canada said in a statement that the temblor was felt across much of north-central British Columbia, including Haida Gwaii as the Queen Charlotte Islands are otherwise called, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, and Houston.
"There have been no reports of damage at this time," the ministry added.
However, experts said tremors exceeding magnitude 7.0 were extremely dangerous.
"A 7.7 is a big, hefty earthquake. It's not something you can ignore," Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center told CNN International.
He explained that the latest tremor had occurred partly under an island, but mostly under shallow water.
"I think we have to be thankful it happened where it did," Fryer said. "If that were a heavily populated area, it would have caused significant damage."
"It definitely would have done significant damage if it had been under a city," the geophysicist added.
The Globe and Mail newspaper reported that the US Coast Guard in Alaska was trying to warn everyone with a boat on the water to prepare for a potential tsunami, the report said.
The Canadian paper also quoted Lieutenant Bernard Auth of the Juneau Command Center as saying that the US Coast Guard was working with local authorities to alert people in coastal towns to take precautions.
The earthquake reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
The Queen Charlotte Islands, which are also known by their official indigenous name of Haida Gwaii, comprise about 150 islands located north of Canada's Vancouver Island. Their total population is about 5,000. The Haida people make up about 45 percent of the total population.

I doubt this will even be noticeable in Hawaii

Me think way too many paycheques got justified with the "Don't believe your eyes nor the actual data... it's actually way more dangerous than it appeared in the rear mirror!" doom & gloom propaganda machine.

I agree highly strange indeed good thought Ghost Rider. Yesterday on my way to NJ, I had stopped at a service station to refuel my work van and couldn't help but notice large chemtrail plumes above me during this infant stages of the hurricane here in the east. IMO It seems that TPTW are up to something indeed. Creating or fueling this storm, and i believe they are using HAARP as well to engage/accelerate or in fact,,,,,maybe creating it from the get-go..... The 43 Trillion Dollar Question is Why?

There are continuous quakes happening that do not qualify as aftershocks because some are stronger than the previous quakes. The msm consistently confuses new quakes for aftershocks, probably purposefully.
